A short length of step index fibre is placed in front of graded index fibre. Walls of the step index fibre form multiple images of its entrance face which are imaged by the graded index fibre to give a more nearly uniform illumination of the graded index fibre and thereby avoid the variable loss properties which can result from the repetitive focusing produced by point illumination or well collimated illumination.

An acousto-optic transducer which may be employed in a telephone subscriber instrument is described in which movement of a diaphragm varies the degree of coupling between the ends of two rectangular optical fibers having rectangular cross sections and which are coupled to the diaphragm for linearly amplitude modulating light signals passing between the fiber ends.

A laser stud mount wherein one terminal connection is provided by the stud and the other by a strip line. One embodiment includes a light guide extending through the stem of the stud mount or along the surface of the stud base for monitoring the light output from the back end of the laser. The monitored light from the back end of the laser can be used to regulate the laser drive.

Fiber optic ribbons are attached to the output facets of laser dice which are positioned in thin slotted anodised aluminum plates between indium coated copper plates. A plurality of such plates provide a stack which is compression bonded with the opposite laser faces extending into the adjoining indium coatings. The sides are lapped and clamped to a heat sink.
