A lamp such as a PAR lamp is provided wherein a metal base shell is attached to a neck portion of a reflector by three or more peens which extend into respective peen holes. In a preferred embodiment, respective of the peen holes are located (a) at opposite regions of the neck portion and (b) on opposite sides of a medial plane of the neck portion. The peen holes of such embodiment extend into the neck portion in a direction other than radially towards the axis which forms the centerline of the neck portion.

A reflector lamp 10 has a vitreous outer envelope 12 formed of a concave reflector 14 and a light-transmitting 16 cover peripherally sealed thereto. The concave reflector and cover are symmetrically arrayed about a longitudinal axis 18 and a substantially cylindrical, hollow neck 20 having a given depth is affixed to the concave reflector opposite the cover. The neck 20 also is symmetrically arrayed about the longitudinal axis 18 and has a substantially closed bottom 21. At least two eyelets, 22, 24, respectively, are sealed in the bottom 21 and a light source capsule 26 is positioned in the concave reflector and aligned with the longitudinal axis 18. The light source capsule 26 has a first end 28 situated in the neck 20 and a second end 30 extending into the concave reflector. The light source capsule 26 comprises a quartz arc tube 32 containing an arc generating and sustaining medium and a surrounding aluminosilicate glass shroud 34. First and second conductive lead-ins 36, 38, respectively, are sealed into a first seal 40 formed at a first end 42 of the shroud 34. Each of the lead-ins 36, 38 has a first portion 44, 46, respectively, sealed in one of the eyelets 22, 24. The first conductive lead-in 36 has a second portion 48 extending interiorly of the shroud and connecting a first electrode 50 of the arc tube and contains a bend or offset 49 to take expansion differences during operation. The second lead-in 38 has a second portion 54 terminating within the first seal 40. An outer conductor 56 has a first end 58 sealed in a second end 60 of the shroud 34 and connects a second electrode 62 of the arc tube 32. A middle section 64 of the outer conductor 56, which is surrounded by an electrically insulating sleeve 57 for at least part of its length, extends exteriorly of the shroud 34 and has a second end 66 connected to the second said lead-in 38. A conventional screw base 68 completes the lamp.

An electric lamp with an enclosed lamp capsule has reduced production manufacturing losses when manufactured with a split eyelet used to duct a lead through the lamp housing. The elongated tube portion of the eyelet has either thinned wall sections or splits formed along the tube axis. When the rivet is set, the tube wall distorts or gives way along the weakened axially lines. The housing glass is then not fractured during riveting, and after riveting the thermal expansion and contraction of the glass with respect to the rivet results in decreased pressure on the glass. The lamp with a split eyelet yields a higher percentage of lamps surviving the manufacturing process, and having fewer cracks or other rivet induced defects in final products.

An incandescent lamp assembly, such as an automobile headlight, includes a reflector defining a cavity having a reflecting surface, and an incandescent lamp capsule mounted within the reflector. The incandescent lamp capsule, typically a tungsten halogen incandescent lamp capsule, includes a light-transmissive envelope, a filament sealed in the envelope and a fill material including an inert gas and a halogen additive. A specularly reflective coating is formed on a portion of the envelope for reflecting visible light and infrared radiation emitted by the filament and not directed to the reflecting surface of the reflector. The envelope is ellipsoidally shaped, at least in the portion having the reflective coating, so that the reflective coating reflects visible light and infrared radiation emitted by the filament back to the filament. The reflective coating limits glare and increases the operating efficiency of the headlight.

An incandescent lamp having an envelope of hardglass. The envelope encloses a tungsten filament and contains a fill material including an inert fill gas and a halogen additive. A coating of silicon dioxide (i.e., silica) is disposed on a substantial portion of the internal surface of the envelope. The silicon dioxide coating prevents the halogen additive from combining with alkaline ions of the hardglass envelope.

A lamp assembly includes a tubular incandescent lamp located between the four tube sections of a double twin tube compact fluorescent lamp such that heat is transferred from the incandescent lamp to the fluorescent lamp when the incandescent lamp is energized. A power source provides power to the incandescent lamp and to the fluorescent lamp through a thermal switch. The thermal switch is in thermal contact with the incandescent lamp and the fluorescent lamp. When the lamp assembly is turned on, the switch applies power to the incandescent lamp initially. When the switch is heated by the incandescent lamp to a predetermined temperature, the switch deenergizes the incandescent lamp and applies power to the fluorescent lamp.

Filament supports for supporting and centering a filament in a double-ended lamp envelope include an inlead portion defining a central axis, a filament attachment portion and a centering portion interconnecting the inlead portion and the filament attachment portion. The centering portion contacts an inner surface of the lamp envelope at a plurality of discrete, circumferentially spaced-apart contact regions that are substantially equally spaced from the central axis. The filament supports are attached to opposite ends of the filament for accurately centering the filament within the lamp envelope. The filament supports are particularly useful in a tubular incandescent lamp capsule having an infrared reflective coating on its outer surface.

A support for a filament or lamp capsule in a lamp having a base and a light-transmissive envelope includes a support ring that is inserted into the base. The ring can be pressed or otherwise secured into the base. The support ring includes at least one pair of tabs that extend radially inwardly. The tabs include mounting holes aligned generally in a direction extending upwardly from the base toward the envelope for receiving and supporting an electrical lead of the filament or lamp capsule. The tabs can be resilient to forcibly engage the lead of the filament or lamp capsule. Two pairs of tabs can be provided to support two leads of the filament or lamp capsule.

A method for mounting a filament in a double ended incandescent lamp capsule. A filament assembly, including a filament, filament supports attached to each end of the filament and an external lead connected to each filament support, is located in a tubular lamp envelope. The position of the filament relative to the lamp envelope is determined, and the filament is moved to a predetermined position relative to the lamp envelope, if necessary. Then, the lamp envelope is heated sufficiently to cause the lamp envelope to deform into contact with at least one of the filament supports so as to securely anchor the filament support. The heating of the lamp envelope in regions of the filament supports can be performed simultaneously or at different times. One or both filament supports can be anchored by the tacking process.

Methods for mounting filaments in tubular incandescent lamp capsules

An electric reflector-type lamp having an improved eyelet construction in which there is utilized a uniquely contoured eyelet fitted into specially shaped apertures in the rear of the glass reflector. The eyelets consist of a hollow cylinder of brass with a bulged center portion which is held firmly within each aperture. The end portions of the eyelet are flared to permanently hold the eyelet in position after insertion. The apertures in the rear of the reflector are comprised of a plurality of sections which accommodate the eyelet and promote sturdy construction. A light source capsule is guided into the apertures by the flared ends of the eyelets, after which the leads are soldered to the eyelets. To seal the lamp and for additional strength, an adhesive can be added around the eyelet.

Reflector-type electric lamp or the like

A high-voltage, low-wattage incandescent lamp having a tubular hard-glass envelope enclosing a coiled coil filament axially mounted with at least one, preferably two, intermediate filamentary supports. The lead-in wires and filamentary supports are mounted in the press seal of the lamp. Each end of the filament is mounted on an internal termination of a lead-in wire. The filament is mounted on the intermediate support(s) at point(s) along the filament body such that the body is divided into approximately equal segments or such that the operating temperature along the body is approximately uniform. Because of reduced filament sag, the tubular glass envelope has a reduced inner diameter and thinner wall thickness whereby the lamp may be more safely contained within an outer envelope in the unlikely event of a lamp burst. A lamp in accordance with the invention will exhibit enhanced operating characteristics and is well suited for applications in Europe.

A multifunctional member and reflector lamp employing same for mounting a light-source capsule on the inside of the neck of the outer envelope, for optically aligning the capsule with respect to the reflector, for reflecting heat away from the base region of the lamp, for blocking convective heat transfer into the lamp neck, and for reflecting light incident on the member toward the lens. In performing these multiple functions, the member reflects heat back to the filament or light source which improves its efficiency, and the member redirects light toward the lens which improves the efficacy of the lamp. In a preferred embodiment, the multifunctional member is formed from stainless steel and has a bowl-shaped body with a somewhat flexible peripheral annular tab extending upward and outward conically. The peripheral tab may be crimped, slotted, or have a tapered thickness in order to provide flexibility sufficient for mounting. The bowl-shaped body preferably is paraboloidal having a focal center substantially coincident with the focal center of the reflector. In an alternate embodiment, the multifunctional member has a curvature matched to the curvature of the reflector and no peripheral tab so that the reflector has been optically extended to the press seal of the light-source capsule. A lamp constructed in accordance with the invention is particularly well suited for employing a heat-sensitive component, such as a diode, in the base region of the lamp.
