A NAS server runs a native filesystem application that manages the filesystem and also includes a virtualization component that allows third-party data processing applications to run on the NAS server substantially as though running on a separate server while allowing the applications to access filesystem information without use of the network and without the overhead of network protocols and related operating system processing. The virtualization component intercepts certain filesystem-related system calls made by the application and directs processing of those filesystem-related system calls (e.g., by the virtualization component or by the native filesystem application), bypassing certain operating system processes including those relating to network protocol processing.

System, device, and method for running third-party data processing applications virtualized on a NAS server

A method for authenticating a network device includes determining that a network link that uses a primary signaling technology and a secondary signaling technology is coupled to the network device; obtaining, using the secondary signaling technology, a unique link identifier that is associated with the network link using the secondary signaling technology; establishing the unique link identifier as a unique device identifier; and authenticating the network device to a service provider by communicating the unique device identifier to the service provider over the network link using the primary signaling technology. In one approach, the primary signaling technology is ADSL and the secondary signaling technology is ISDN. The unique link identifier may be an ISDN telephone number for an ISDN line which is obtained using caller ID techniques.

Method and apparatus for configuring network devices

One or more nodes of a data communication system is automatically switched between two or more possible node configurations, such as between a DTE configuration and a DCE configuration, until the presence of a carrier or similar indicator signal is sensed. Configuration devices include relays and electronic switches. Control devices preferably are microprocessor based. In one aspect, upon power up or other initiation, the microprocessor toggles an output control signal so as to repeatedly toggle a switch between, e.g., DTE and DCE positions and to terminate the toggling when a link indicator is detected.

Automatic crossover configuration for serial data links

A two-wire interface having a receive wire and a transmit wire is coupled for communication with a single-wire serial interface to provide for relatively high-speed data transmission. In one aspect, controllable buffers are coupled to the transmit and receive lines of the two-wire serial interface. The outputs from the two buffers are coupled to a commnon line which is also coupled to the single line of the single-wire interface. The transmit buffer and/or read buffer and/or transmission from the single-wire interface are controlled, e.g., such as using control signals provided by software, such that the transmit buffer from the two-wire interface is enabled only when transmission from the single-wire interface is disabled and transmission from the single-wire interface is permitted only when the transmit buffer of the two-wire interface is disabled. By this type of system, it is possible to avoid coupling which involves a pull-up transistor and the like, avoiding lengthening the rise time or fall time of signals and providing the potential for relatively high data transmission rates such as 1 Mbps or more.
