An inflator for an air-bag comprises a single gas bottle () containing the pressurised gas. The pressurised gas is a mixture including at least one oxidisable gas and at least one oxidising gas. The inflator incorporates a mechanism () to open the gas bottle to enable gas to flow from the gas bottle to the interior of an air-bag (). There is an initiating device () within the air-bag in the form of a spark generator which generates a spark across electrodes () to ignite the mixture of gas from the gas bottle.

Inflator for an air-bag

An inflator for an air-bag comprises at least one gas bottle () containing pressurized gas. The gas bottle is sealed by a rupturable foil (). There is a support member () engaging the rupturable foil to maintain it in an unruptured state. The support member () is retained in an initial position by a part () of a piston element () which directly engages the support member (). The piston element () is associated with a squib () to drive the piston element from an initial position to a release position in which the piston element no longer engages the support member (). This permits the support member () to move to a position in which the foil () will rupture to permit gas to escape from the bottle. The preferred embodiment has two gas bottles each sealed by a respective foil each maintained by a support member which directly engages a single piston member.

A safety device is disclosed which is configured to be actuated by the supply of gas. The safety device incorporates an outlet vent pipe which is sealed by a releasable clip. The releasable clip has a first elongate main gripping element and a second elongate moveable gripping element. The main gripping element has a retaining element to retain one end of the moveable gripping element. The safety device also includes an arrangement to retain the other end of the moveable gripping element in a predetermined position such that the clip may grip a fabric tube or the like between the main gripping element and the moveable gripping element. A mechanism is provided which responds to a supply signal to move the other end of the moveable gripping element to release the grip.

Safety device

The invention refers to a device permitting the flow of pressurized gas into a safety device, for example an air bag or a belt tightener, with a pressurized container for compressible gas with at least one opening, that is sealed with a gas-tight film covering, where the film covering is supported evenly, over at least a large part of its free surface, by a support device that can be destroyed or retracted in a targeted manner after triggering. To ensure that the gas-tight film covering is forcibly opened after the triggering of the device, a piece is provided that pierces or penetrates the film immediately after the triggering of the device, but before the support device moves.
