A method for altering the melt flow ratio (MFR) of ethylene copolymers made in a gas phase reactor using a supported Ziegler-Natta catalyst treated with a catalyst modifier. The method involves changing the amount of the catalyst modifier added to the supported Ziegler-Natta polymerization catalyst to effect changes in the MFR of the resulting polymer.

Method for altering melt flow ratio of ethylene polymers

A process for controlling the placement of alpha olefins within an ethylene copolymer. The process involves polymerizing ethylene and an alpha olefin in the gas phase while changing the breadth of control over the molar ratio of ethylene to comonomer and/or hydrogen which is being fed to a polymerization reactor. At tighter control breadths, the alpha olefin may be incorporated mainly in the higher molecular weight portions of the ethylene copolymer. At looser control breadths, the alpha olefin may be incorporated more evenly throughout the ethylene copolymer or mainly in the lower molecular weight portions of the ethylene copolymer.

Controlling the placement of comonomer in an ethylene copolymer

Ethylene copolymers having a relatively high melt flow ratio and a multimodal profile in a temperature rising elution fractionation (TREF) plot are disclosed. The copolymers can be made into film having good dart impact values and good stiffness properties under decreased extruder pressures.

Olefin polymerization is carried out with a supported phosphinimine catalyst which has been treated with a long chain substituted amine compound.

Modified phosphinimine catalysts for olefin polymerization

A supported catalyst system comprising a phosphinimine ligand containing catalyst on an alumina support treated with a metal salt has improved reactor continuity in a dispersed phase reaction in terms of initial activation and subsequent deactivation. The resulting catalyst has a lower consumption of ethylene during initiation and a lower rate of deactivation. Preferably the catalyst is used with an antistatic agent.

Reactor continuity

A highly active, supported phosphinimine catalyst is fed to a gas phase reactor as a slurry in a liquid hydrocarbon. Feeding the catalyst to a gas phase reactor in a viscous liquid hydrocarbon modifies catalyst initiation kinetics.
