A virtual packing list for facilitating electronic commerce transactions made over the Internet. When a consumer places an order over the Internet for digital content deliverables, a unique virtual packing list is generated for that order. The virtual packing list contains a manifest of all the digital contents ordered by the consumer. The virtual packing list also optionally includes legal rights, files, and/or other documentation pertaining to the intellectual property corresponding to that commercial transaction. The order is filled based on the virtual packing list. Thereupon, the ordered digital contents, along with the virtual packing list, is downloaded to the consumer. The consumer can verify delivery of the digital contents based on the virtual packing list. Furthermore, the virtual packing list can be used in a host of post-order processes, such as accounting, return receipt, invoicing, inventory control, etc.

Virtual packing list

A method and system for licensing intellectual properties. A user can acquire a license conveying rights in intellectual properties by accessing a designated site and making a digital license request. Terms and conditions that can be accepted by the user are then made available to the user in the form of a model digital license agreement. Agreement to the terms of the model digital license agreement by the user, and acceptance thereof by the Licensor, creates a digital license agreement that conveys the intellectual property rights defined in the digital license agreement. The final form of the digital license agreement, after agreement thereto by the Licensor and the user, creates a digital license agreement representation that is a digital representation of the terms and conditions that define the intellectual property rights conveyed.

Digital license agreement

A method and system thereof for establishing legal rights and limitations regarding the use of electronically distributed intellectual property (e.g., a 'digital rights framework'). The intellectual property is modeled and offered for different types of distribution (e.g., for sale, rent, etc.). In response to a request for access to and use of the intellectual property, the legal rights and limitations associated with the type of distribution requested are provided. For example, a hypertext reference can be used to invoke the legal rights and limitations associated with the type of distribution. An agreement to these legal rights and limitations is reached and executed, and stored for subsequent reference and use. The digital rights framework provides a method and system for processing information encoded in a standardized and extensible format (e.g., Extensible Markup Language, XML) for modeling and representing the legal rights, limitations and responsibilities for intellectual properties distributed, for example, over the World Wide Web using Internet Protocol.

Digital rights framework

A method and system thereof for controlling intellectual properties in an intellectual property management system. A unique digital identifier is assigned to each of the intellectual properties. The digital identifier includes an attribute associating a respective intellectual property to the intellectual property management system and an attribute specifying a source for the digital identifier. One class of digital identifier is assigned to all known instantiations of the respective intellectual property. A second class of digital identifies assigns a unique digital identifier to each specific instantiation of a respective intellectual property. The digital identifiers are stored in a registry. The digital identifier may also be embedded within the intellectual property, or it may be inscribed within a document or element which accompanies, proceeds, follows, or is otherwise related to the intellectual property. Characteristics and meta-data are also assigned to the intellectual property for searching, tracking, classifying and understanding the intellectual property.

Digital identifiers and digital identifier control systems for intellectual properties

A method and system thereof for controlling and regulating the distribution of intellectual properties using Internet Protocol and a plurality of controlling processes and applications. An intellectual property is assigned a unique digital identifier that provides an address for locating the intellectual property using Internet Protocol. Electronic links are enabled between the intellectual property and other intellectual property elements which establish terms for accessing said intellectual property. A digital feature element can be used to describe features of the intellectual property. A digital rights element can be used to describe the legal rights and limitations associated with the intellectual property. A digital license element can be used to provide a license for the intellectual property.

System for controlling and regulating distribution of intellectual properties using internet protocol framework

A method and system thereof for implementing and controlling the electronic distribution of intellectual property using protocols other than the Internet Protocol. A request for intellectual property is codified according to a protocol other than an Internet Protocol. A service is performed to provide an electronic version of the intellectual property in response to the request, and a service is performed to provide an electronic version of terms for using the intellectual property. These requests and responses are coupled between an intellectual property management system and non-Internet Protocol based networks and/or systems. Thus, software product and service orders are translated into deliverables that are coupled over non-Internet protocol systems.
