Apparatus and device for testing within a metal pipe are described. The apparatus includes an exciter for generating an electromagnetic (EM) field for exciting a wall of the metal pipe; an extendable and retractable sensor assembly comprising a plurality of sensor bars arranged in an angled manner with respect to an axis of the pipe for sensing residue EM field on a wall of the pipe; a plurality of guide wheel assemblies for supporting and moving the apparatus along the axis of the pipe; and a control unit for recording sensed data from the sensor assembly.

Method and apparatus for electromagnetic testing of pipes

Apparatus and method for detecting flaws in a wall of a metallic pipe containing a fluid are disclosed. The apparatus includes: a plurality of sensors distributed around an inner circumference of the metallic pipe, for sensing magnetic field signals from the metallic pipe; a collapsible supporting structure, including a plurality of supporting petals, at a front side of the plurality of sensors for supporting the apparatus; a sail mounted on and extended from bottom ends of the plurality of supporting petals, when the plurality of supporting petals are in an extended state, the sail is expanded to form a shape capable for containing the fluid; a processing module receiving sensed data from the plurality of sensors; and one or more battery modules for electrically powering the plurality of sensors and the processing module.

Method and apparatus to detect flaws in metallic pipe

A surround for protecting an acoustic device for sending and/or receiving acoustic signals positioned therein from impact as the surround is rolled along an interior surface of a fluid-containing pipeline, the surround comprising: a shell comprising an exterior segment configured to roll along the interior surface, the exterior segment defining at least one acoustic aperture configured to allow the passage of acoustic signals therethrough; and a lattice configured between the exterior segment and the acoustic device, the lattice comprising a plurality of unit cells, each unit cell defining an opening, wherein the plurality of unit cells are interconnected and define a plurality of openings, wherein the plurality of openings allow fluid to move between the interior of the surround and the exterior of the surround and enable the passage of the acoustic signals transmitted and/or received by the acoustic device such that the surround reduces the diminution of the quality and/or strength of the acoustic signals.

Surround for pipeline inspection equipment

The present invention relates to a method and system of an arrangement of sensors that can be used to detect changes in burial conditions of a pipeline buried under a body of water. The method comprising: obtaining a first temperature of a fluid at a first location; obtaining a second temperature of the fluid at a second location upstream and proximal to the crossing of the body of water; obtaining a third temperature of the fluid at a third location downstream from the crossing of the body of water; generating an estimate of the temperature of the fluid at the third location by establishing the rate of change of temperature of the fluid using the obtained first and second temperature and the distance between the first and second sensors; and identifying pipe exposure when there is a deviation between the estimated temperature and the obtained third temperature.

Detection of pipeline exposure in water crossings

The invention locates impaired sections of a pipeline, such as sections where the wall of the pipeline has been weakened or thinned. It provides a moveable device which passes through the pipeline and which has a first station. The moveable device has means to locate its position accurately. There is a second station, which is mounted either on the moveable device or in association with a fixed location on the pipeline wall. Either the first station or the second station has an acoustic or seismic pulse generator, and the other has a pulse receiver. The time taken for a pulse to travel from the pulse generator to the receiver is found to vary with the condition of the pipeline wall at the location where the moveable device is located at the time it receives (or sends) the pulse. The rate of change of velocity of the pulse as the device passes different locations in the pipeline is also found to vary with the condition of the pipeline wall at such location.

Device and method to assess impairment of pipeline wall strength

A sensor unit for use in sensing conditions in a pipeline comprises an untethered a ball-shaped surround adapted to roll along the interior surface of a pipeline, and instrument package within the ball-shaped surround. The package contains at least one magnetometer or accelerometer. Preferably, three magnetometers, arranged orthogonally, are present. Other sensors can also be present as required, such as an acoustic sensor to detect leaks and a temperature or chemical sensor. Recording means record the data acquired by the magnetometer(s) or accelerometer and the sensors, and optionally also record a timing trace.

Untethered, unpowered, rollable device to sense condition of pipeline wall

This invention uses an interferometric fiber optic sensor, particularly a Sagnac or Michelson interferometer, in a first fiber to monitor a sensing length of the first fiber and to detect disturbances. Signals indicating disturbances are classified as being of interest or not of interest, depending on predetermined criteria. Disturbances of interest can be, for example, the breaking of reinforcement wires in concrete pipe, the breaking of wires in suspension cables, a fire, a pipeline leak, or an intrusion. A location sensor system is used to determine the location of disturbances of interest, and to confirm the interferometer signal to reduce noise. The location sensor system is a fiber optic sensor, such as a phase OTDR sensor or a Brillouin effect sensor, which can detect the location of events it senses. It is present either in the first fiber or in a separate fiber laid adjacent the first fiber along its sensing length, as for example in the same optical cable.

Fibre optic sensor method and apparatus

Discloses methods to perform magnetic testing of tensioning elements in a pre-stressed concrete cylinder, such as a pipe or water reservoir and testing apparatus. The apparatus includes magnetic flux production means and detector means disposed proximal to a surface of the cylinder in a plane in common with the magnetic flux production means that is orthogonal to an axis of the cylinder. The apparatus operates over a range of low frequency signals, for example, between 20 and 300 hertz or a pulse. Output of the inspection apparatus includes a signal and distance plot showing the results of testing a cylinder at one or more frequencies. In accordance with another method of analysis, a characteristic of the phase of the output over distance is plotted, including the phase or representations of the in-phase or quadrature components of the received signal in relation to the driving signal.

Electromagnetic analysis of concrete tensioning wires

Method and apparatus for detecting failure of tensioned reinforcements in a structure by means of a plurality of acoustic or seismic detectors disposed about the structure in a known arrangement, processing signals from the detectors to determine frequency contents and origins, and identifying simultaneous signals as due to the failure of tensioned reinforcements in the structure when they meet spectral and origin criteria.

Continuous monitoring of reinforcements in structures

An array of acoustic sensors spaced along a cable is deployed in a fluid filled concrete pipeline and the sensors are monitored to find acoustic anomalies, particularly anomalies resulting from breakage of a reinforcing wire for the concrete. The location of wire breaks is found from the data collected.

A solid pesticide composition is taught which includes a solid carrier, a pesticide and an amount of flour and/or starch to promote the dispersion of the pesticide into the wax. The solid carrier includes paraffin oil, paraffin wax and microcrystalline wax. A solid pesticide composition is provided without having to include a chemical surfactant.
