A system and process for electrodynamic powder coating of conducting and non-conducting substrates using an electrodynamic fluidized bed. The system generally includes a coating applicator means for applying charged particles to the substrate to be coated, and postcharging means for applying to the substrate an additional charge of such polarity as to cause an increase in the electrostatic forces holding the coating particles to the substrate. The system further includes a precharging means for precharging the substrate with a charge of such polarity as to effect more uniform coating of the substrate and a higher rate of coating. Where the substrate to be coated is a continuous web, the system includes a conveying means for conveying the web through the various positions adjacent to the three aforementioned means. The coating applicator means may be an electrodynamic coating apparatus of the electrodynamic fluidized bed type and comprising a fluidized bed means and a charging bed means with a porous wall positioned therebetween, and a recharging means.

Electrodynamic coating process

A closure for a container wherein a tape having a metal part and thermoplastic material which is applied to the container wall and heated. Most of the material is squeezed out from between the metal part and the wall into a rib which is formed during application. The material in the rib has an isotropic structural characteristic since the rib formation provides a region into which the excess material is directed minimizing the shearing effect of the flow of material along the interface with the container wall. Also the rib reinforces the tape in the critical region to resist pressure of gasses in the container when used to contain carbonated beverages. This patent covers a method of making the above described closure.

Method of making a container closure

An end unit intended for packaging products in an associated can or container wherein the product is of the type producing gases so as to normally increase the internal pressure within the can after the closing of the can. The end unit has a vent opening therethrough and is normally closed by a closure member which is held in contact with the container wall surrounding the vent opening by a strip of stretchable material having a memory. When pressure within the container exceeds a predetermined pressure, the closure will move out of the container sealing position under the restraint of the strip, and the container will be vented to the atmosphere.

Container closure

An induction heater system for fusing substrates having charged powder particles deposited thereon, the system comprising a conveyor means for conveying the substrates along a predetermined path and a fusing means disposed along and adjacent to the predetermined path for fusing the substrates. There is provided a means for creating an electric field in a given direction so as to provide a counter force in a direction opposite to the direction of tear-away forces acting on the particles, the latter being created by the electromagnetic influence of the fusing means on the particles.

A propellantless aerosol container wherein an elastic expelling member is sleeved over a flexible product containing member and carried within a rigid container body. Retainers, releasable from without the container, are provided whereby the expelling member may be extended and retained in the extended condition during filling of the container, and later released to provide an expelling force.

A pulsed powder application system for electrostatically powder-coating a substrate comprises an applicator bed means, a fluidizing means, and a pulsing means. The pulsing means is actuable during a coating time to effect ionization of electrostatic powder particles so as to cause the establishment of an electric field attracting the particles to the substrate, and actuable during non-coating times to cause the establishment of a reverse electric field attracting the ionized particles away from the substrate. A feeder bed means and an associated fluidizing means are provided for holding the electrostatic powder prior to usage for coating by the applicator bed means.
