A cover assembly for a circular bearing port in the yoke of a universal joint comprises a plurality of separate cover segments configured and dimensioned for insertion into the port in positions coacting with each other to close the port. Each of the cover segments has an outer edge seated in a locking groove circumscribing an interior surface of the port. The cover segments are interconnected to form an integral circular cover, and the cover is rotationally fixed with respect to the yoke.

An oil film bearing for rotatably supporting a roll in a rolling mill is provide that includes a sleeve having an internal bore and an external spherical surface, the internal bore being configured and dimensioned for axial insertion onto a neck of the roll. A bushing includes an internal spherical surface configured and dimensioned to surround and rotatably contain the external spherical surface of the sleeve, the bushing being subdivided into multiple interconnected segments. A chock for containing and radially supporting the interconnected bushing segments.

Spherical oil film bearing

Rolling mill bearings incorporate bearing bushings with pluralities of hydrostatic pad recesses, that are preferably in conjunction hydrodynamic bearings also formed within the bushing. Each recess has an isolated lubricant passage that is adapted for coupling to a separate isolated source of pressurized lubricant. In some embodiments herein, the isolated pressurized lubricant source is supplied by a dedicated outlet of a pressure pump. In this manner each hydrostatic pad recess has a dedicated pressurized lubricant supply that is not interrupted by loss of lubricant pressure events in other bearing pads or elsewhere within the rolling mill lubrication system.

Hybrid hydrodynamic and hydrostatic bearing bushing and lubrication system for rolling mill

A bushing for rotatably supporting a journal comprises a cylindrical wall having an inner bearing surface configured and dimensioned to surround the journal. Oil is supplied continuously to a lubricated zone between the journal and the bearing surface. The thus supplied oil escapes in opposite directions from inboard and outboard ends of the lubricated zone. A circular channel is positioned to capture oil escaping from the outboard end of the lubricated zone. A drain conveys oil captured in the channel back in the direction of oil escaping from the inboard end of the lubricated zone.

An oil film bearing for rotatably supporting a shaft comprises a spherical housing having a bore in which the shaft is rotatably supported, and an outer spherical surface. A chock contains the spherical housing. The chock is internally configured with an inner spherical surface coacting with the outer spherical surface of the spherical housing to define a raceway configured to accommodate angular rotation of the shaft about a central point.

Self aligning oil film bearing

A system is disclosed for use in a rolling mill oil film bearing to remove a laminar flow of oil exiting tangentially from between a rotating sleeve and a fixed bushing surrounding the sleeve. The system comprises confinement surfaces cooperating with the sleeve and the bushing to define an annular chamber arranged to receive the exiting laminar flow of oil. Impellers project into the chamber and are rotatable with and at the velocity of the sleeve to thereby propel the oil around the annular chamber. An outlet communicates tangentially with the annular chamber for removing oil being propelled around the chamber by the rotation of the impellers. The size of the outlet in relation to the volume of oil received in the annular chamber is such that the chamber remains filled with oil during steady state operation of the bearing.

Self pumping oil film bearing

A system is disclosed for use in a rolling mill oil film bearing to remove oil exiting from between a rotating sleeve and a fixed bushing surrounding the sleeve. The system comprises an annular chamber arranged to receive the exiting flow of oil. The chamber is isolated from a drainage sump by confinement surfaces including a seal interface defined by a flexible seal in contact with an adjacent rigid component of the bearing. Impellers project into the chamber and are rotable with and at the velocity of the sleeve to rotatively propel oil around the chamber. A discharge conduit communicates tangentially with the chamber and is arranged to receive a pressurized flow of the oil being rotatively propelled around the chamber. A venturi is located in the discharge conduit. A suction conduit connects the venturi to the drainage sump. Oil escaping from the annular chamber past the seal interface into the drainage sump is aspirated by the venturi for removal via the conduit.

Venturi drain for self-pumping bearing rolling mills

A seal is disclosed for use on the tapered section of a roll neck in a rolling mill. The seal comprises a flexible circular seal body having a central axis and at least one radially outwardly extending flange joined by a hinge to an angularly extending lip. The hinge has a reduced thickness as compared to the thicknesses of the flange and the lip, and the lip has converging first and second sides leading to an enlarged rim. The rim has first and second peripheral faces that converge to an outer edge contained in a reference plane parallel to the central axis of the seal body.

An oil film bearing assembly rotatably supports the neck of a roll in a rolling mill. The bearing assembly comprises a housing containing a sleeve bearing and a thrust bearing. A circular lock assembly coacts with the thrust bearing to axially retain the bearing assembly on the roll neck. The lock assembly is axially received on and is rotatable into and out of mechanical interengagement with the roll neck. First bearing elements are carried by and project inwardly from the lock assembly to contact a surface of the roll neck at a first location, and second bearing elements project inwardly from the housing to contact an outer surface of the lock assembly at a second location spaced axially from the first location.

Rolling mill oil film bearing

An apparatus for urging an oil film bearing onto and off of a roll neck in a rolling mill comprises an annular hydraulically actuated piston/cylinder unit mounted on a cylindrical section of the roll neck. The cylindrical neck section is delimited at one end by a circular shoulder on the roll neck, and at the opposite end by a circular groove in the roll neck. A retaining ring has lock arms pivotally movable into seated positions in the groove. The piston/cylinder unit is operable in a first mode in an abutting relationship with the lock arms to urge the bearing onto the roll neck, and is operative in a second mode in an abutting relationship with the shoulder to urge the bearing off of the roll neck. The piston/cylinder unit and the lock arms having complimentary tapered surfaces arranged to coact in urging the lock arms inwardly into their seated positions in response to the abutment of the piston/cylinder unit with the lock arms.

Apparatus for urging an oil film bearing onto and off of a roll neck in a rolling mill

A monitoring and alarm system is disclosed for a rolling mill in which oil is pumped from a reservoir via feed piping and branch feed lines to oil film bearings and oil is returned from the bearings via branch drain lines and return piping to the reservoir. The system comprises sensors positioned in at least one of the branch feed lines, the branch return lines and the bearings. The sensors are operative to sense diverse parameters indicative of bearing operating conditions and to generate status signals representative thereof. A controller evaluates the status signals and triggers warning signals when the status signals indicate that the bearings are in danger of being damaged by continued operation. Alarms respond to the warning signals and alert mill operating personnel to such danger.

Monitoring and alarm system for rolling mill oil film bearings

An oil film bearing is disclosed for a rolling mill roll having a tapered neck leading to a reduced diameter end section. The bearing comprises an internally tapered sleeve received in a seated position on the tapered roll neck. The sleeve is journaled for rotation in a bushing fixed within a chock assembly. A tubular piston is received on and fixed relative to the reduced diameter end section of the roll. A cylinder is internally subdivided by the piston into first and second chambers. A sleeve ring abuts an end of the sleeve and a circular thrust component is interposed between and arranged to overlap adjacent segments of the sleeve ring and the piston. One or the other of the first and second chambers may be pressurized, whereupon pressurization of the first chamber will cause the cylinder to axially advance and act via the thrust component and the sleeve ring to urge the sleeve into its seated position, and pressurization of the second chamber will cause the cylinder to axially retract and act via the chock assembly and the bushing to withdraw the sleeve from its seated position.

Oil film bearing with compact hydraulic mount

An inner seal ring is disclosed for use in an oil film bearing for a roll in a rolling mill. The roll has a neck with an intermediate section tapering from an end face to a reduced diameter end section contained within a sleeve. The sleeve is fixed in relation to the roll neck and is journalled for rotation in a bushing contained within a chock. A flexible neck seal is mounted on the intermediate section of the roll neck for rotation with the roll within a seal end plate fixed to the chock. The inner seal ring comprises a circular midsection with an annular face on one side and with inner and outer flanges projecting from an opposite side. The inner flange is configured to engage the neck seal, the outer flange is configured to coact in spaced relationship with the seal end plate to define a first labyrinth, and the annular face is contoured to coact in an abutting relationship with the roll end face in defining a second labyrinth.

Inner seal ring for rolling mill oil film bearing

A neck seal is disclosed for use in an oil film bearing assembly for a roll in a rolling mill, the roll having a neck with an intermediate tapered section leading to a reduced diameter end section contained within a sleeve, with the sleeve being fixed in relation to the roll neck and being journalled for rotation in a bushing fixed within a chock. The neck seal is adapted to be mounted on the tapered section of the roll neck for rotation therewith at a location surrounded by a seal end plate fixed to the chock. The neck seal comprises a flexible circular body having axially spaced radially outwardly projecting first and second flanges configured and dimensioned to sealingly contact the seal end plate. First and second axially spaced ridges projecting radially inwardly from the circular body for contact with the tapered section of the roll neck. The first and second ridges are respectively aligned substantially radially with and radially joined to the first and second flanges by solid intermediate portions of the seal body.
