An implantable hearing prosthesis, comprising an integrated integrity system. The integrity system is configured to measure one or more electrical characteristics of at least one component of the prosthesis, to evaluate the integrity of the prosthesis based on the measurements, and to perform at least one diagnostic operation based on the evaluation.

Some embodiments relate to a device for generating stimulation signals, comprising: a stimulation delivery circuit; a first component to monitor charge delivered in at least one charge pulse via the stimulation delivery circuit; and a second component to ensure delivered charge substantially corresponds to charge of a charge pulse intended to be delivered by the stimulation delivery circuit. In some embodiments, the device may further comprise a charge setting circuit responsive to a charge pulse setting signal, such as a constant current of fixed pulse width, to set the charge of the charge pulse intended to be delivered.

Sound processing processes and sound processing units are disclosed. The processes and units have particular application to auditory prostheses. In an embodiment, after input sound signals are processed into channels, an algorithm is applied to selectively increase the modulation depth of the envelope signals. In another embodiment, a sound processing unit includes a filter bank configured to process a sound signal to generate envelope signals in each of a plurality of spaced frequency channels. The speech processing unit also includes a broadband envelope detector configured to measure the envelope of at least one broadband signal, and a channel modulation module configured to use the at least one broadband envelope signal to modulate the channel envelope signals to generate modulated envelope signals.

A method for fitting to a recipient a cochlear prosthesis having a sound processor that processes received sound in accordance with a MAP, the method comprises providing, by the hearing prosthesis, combinations of voice prompts and test stimuli for testing values of an element of the MAP; receiving from the recipient an indication of which of said values are desirable; and revising the MAP with the desired value for the tested element. A totally implantable cochlear implant system forming a single implantable unit (). The unit () has an implantable power source () that provides the power requirements of the implantable unit (). The unit () also has an on board microphone () that detects external sounds, such as speech, and outputs acoustic signals representative of the detected sounds. The unit further includes speech processor circuitry () that directly receives the acoustic signals from the microphone () and converts the signals into stimulation signals representative of the detected sounds. An electrode array () suitable for insertion of the cochlea () of an implantee receives the stimulation signals and transmits electrical stimulations to the implantee's auditory nerve ().

A power supply for a medical device having one or more power consuming components. The power supply system comprises first and second battery cells electrically connected in series to supply a first level of power to the components, and at least one additional battery cell. The power supply also comprises a control system configured to electrically connect the at least one additional battery in parallel with one or both of the first or second batteries upon a detection of a power demand at the components that is greater than said first level.

A sound processing process, device and software are disclosed which seek to improve pitch perception, with particular application to auditory prostheses. After input sound signals are processed into channels, an algorithm is applied to selectively increase the modulation depth of the envelope signals. In certain embodiments, the channelized signals are adjusted in timing so as to align the phase of modulated envelope signals in different channels. This results in provision of synchronous (phase aligned) modulation periodicity across channels and hence less pitch ambiguity for listeners to the processed signal, or for application of the signal to hearing prostheses such as cochlear implants. In some embodiments, a broadband envelope signal is used to modulate the level of the narrow band channel signals, so that voicing frequency modulation information in the broadband envelope signal is provided in all narrow band channel signals and the phase of modulated signals in the channels are aligned. A preferred form uses an envelope signal which is modified to increase its modulation depth, and is normalized so as to allow for modulation of the channel signals.

A cochlear implant system comprising a first unit adapted to be worn on or in one ear of an implantee. The first unit has a case housing componentry including a microphone, and a speech processor means. A second unit or accessory is adapted to be worn on or in the other ear of the implantee. The second unit or accessory has a case housing a second power source. An electrical conduction means for transmitting power from the second power source to the componentry of the first unit extends between the first and second units. Such a conduction means can extend around the back of the head of the implantee.

General purpose accessory for a cochlear implant system

A system for monitoring and controlling power demands in devices with DC power supplies is disclosed. In response to a detected decline in voltage levels, the device reduces the power demands of the device, in one or more stages, before powering down entirely. This approach has application to battery powered devices, particularly for medical applications such as cochlear implants.

An acoustic sensor, suitable for use in a totally implanted hearing prosthesis, uses an elongate member and piezoelectric sensor to detect acoustic signals when the sensor is implanted so as to be in fluid communication with the perilymph. The sensor may be applied in systems which are not totally implanted.

The invention provides an amplifier for providing adaptive operation of an auditory prosthesis. The amplifier receives an input signal and produces an output signal, and comprises a gain control. Estimates of the current noise floor value of the input signal are obtained, and in response to a change in the current estimated noise floor value, the gain control alters the amount of gain applied to the input signal. Further, in response to the change in the current estimated noise floor value, the gain control alters a gain compression ratio of the amplifier across the dynamic range of the amplifier. The present invention allows for adaptive operation of the amplifier responsive to varying noise floor levels, while maintaining desired gain characteristics of the amplifier across a range of input signal levels.

Variable sensitivity control for a cochlear implant

In accordance with one aspect of the invention, methods and systems are disclosed for delivering a stimulating signal by a stimulating medical device having a plurality of electrodes. Such methods and systems comprise receiving a signal; filtering the received signal to obtain a plurality of band pass filtered signals; delivering to each electrode of a first group of one or more electrodes, a first set of stimulation signals, wherein the first set of stimulation signals comprises stimulations signals for each of a first group of two or more band pass filtered signals; and delivering to each of electrodes of a second group of one or more electrodes, a second set of stimulation signals, wherein the second set of stimulation signals comprises stimulations signals for each of a second group of one or more band pass filtered signals; and wherein the first set of stimulation signals are delivered at a different effective stimulation rate than the second set of stimulation signals.
