A method of performing audio synthesis has a first audio event input to an audio algorithm along with associated parameters. A synthesis algorithm accesses a soundbank to generate audio output. The soundbank has two or more levels for a first desired sound. A first level is associated with a first sample of a relatively chaotic waveform, and a second level is associated with a second sample of a relatively stable waveform. Parameter data is associated with one or more of the levels. The first sample and the second sample begin to sound at the same point in time in response to the first audio event. The audio output is based in part on the parameter data, and the second sample is continuously looped until a second audio event is detected.

Systems and methods for portable audio synthesis

A method for remixing a music piece includes providing a music composition graphical user interface on a portable communications device. The music composition graphical user interface displays a plurality of actionable menu items. A first collection of actionable menu items is provided to the graphical user interface from an internal source. A music remixing algorithm incorporates music rules and can remix the music piece in a manner where only one musical component is remixed at a given time. A music remix database is accessible via the graphical user interface. A plurality of music remix data is organized based in part on a music style parameter. A second collection of actionable menu items is provided from the music remix database to the graphical user interface via a communications network. The first and second collection of actionable menu items displayed in a seamless manner.

A method of performing audio synthesis is disclosed. An audio event is input to an audio algorithm along with associated parameters including source sample data. An interpolation function is provided and the source sample data are interpolated to generate one or more interpolated samples based on the source sample data. A filter function is provided and at least one of the interpolated samples is filtered to generate a filtered sample. A gain function is provided and the filtered sample is processed to generate a gained sample. At least one of the interpolation, filter, and gain functions include outputting an earlier-calculated value along with an estimated difference value in lieu of calculating a new value.

Methods for generating music are disclosed. A music data file is generated at a first node. The music data file is transmitted from the first node and received at a second node. Musical definition data that provides information regarding a data structure and data for musical parameters is extracted from the music data file at the second node. The musical definition data is processed and music is generated at the second node for playback in accordance with the data structure and the musical parameters. A modified music data file is generated at the second node and transmitted to the first node. Modified music is generated at the first node based on the modified music data file.

Methods for generating music using a transmitted/received music data file

Systems and methods for creating, modifying, interacting with and playing music are provided, particularly systems and methods employing a top-down process, where the user is provided with a musical composition that may be modified and interacted with and played and/or stored (for later play). The system preferably is provided in a handheld form factor, and a graphical display is provided to display status information, graphical representations of musical lanes or components which preferably vary in shape as musical parameters and the like are changed for particular instruments or musical components such as a microphone input or audio samples. An interactive auto-composition process preferably is utilized that employs musical rules and preferably a pseudo random number generator, which may also incorporate randomness introduced by timing of user input or the like, the user may then quickly begin creating desirable music in accordance with one or a variety of musical styles, with the user modifying the auto-composed (or previously created) musical composition, either for a real time performance and/or for storing and subsequent playback.

A method of adjusting an externally supplied audio signal as part of internally generated music data using a computing system is disclosed. At least one music generation algorithm is provided, which consists of at least one music rule associated with a set of acceptable pitch values. The music generation algorithm generates music data. An audio signal is received with at least one pitch characteristic. One or more portions of the audio signal is analyzed to discern the pitch characteristic. A determination is made whether the pitch characteristic is musically compatible with the set of acceptable pitch values. In the event that the pitch characteristic is not musically compatible with the set of acceptable pitch values, the portion of the audio signal is pitch adjusted to generate a pitch-corrected audio signal. The music data and the pitch-corrected audio signal is provided to a digital signal processing resource. The digital signal processing resource may be a hardware digital signal processor. The audio signal may be received from a microphone. User input may be received, and the user input may modify the music data corresponding to one or a plurality of instruments, audio samples or microphone input.

Systems and methods for creating, modifying, interacting with and playing musical compositions

Systems and methods for creating, modifying, interacting with and playing music are provided, particularly systems and methods employing a top-down process, where the user is provided with a musical composition that may be modified and interacted with and played and/or stored (for later play). The graphic information preferably is customizable by a user, such as by way of a companion software program, which preferably runs on a PC and is coupled to the system via an interface such as a USB port. A modified MIDI representation of music is employed, preferably, for example, in which musical rule information is embedded in MIDI pitch data, and in which sound samples may be synchronized with MIDI events in a desirable and more optimum manner. The system architecture preferably includes a microprocessor for controlling the overall system operation. A synthesizer/DSP preferably is provided in order to generate audio streams. Non-volatile memory preferably is provided for storing sound banks. Preferably removable non-volatile storage/memory is provided to store configuration files, song lists and samples, and optionally sound bank optimization or sound bank data. A codec preferably is provided for receiving microphone input and for providing audio output. A radio tuner preferably is provided so that output from the radio tuner may be mixed, for example, with auto-composed songs created by the system, which preferably includes a virtual radio mode of operation.

A method for playing a song employing a musical controller is disclosed. Program instructions are executed, and one or more music composition algorithms are applied to song data in accordance with a song data structure to generate music output for the song. User input is received for one or more musical components, and musical data in accordance with the song data structure corresponding to the musical components are generated or modified in accordance with the user input. The user input is provided via a controller, and the controller provides musical information via descriptors. The descriptors contain data that represent musical information, and the descriptors include data that does not represent sampled audio information. Music rules are applied to the modified musical data, and the music output for the song is modified in accordance with the modified musical data. As a first step the user is provided with musical data in accordance with the song data structure for a complete song, and in response to the user input a modified song is created based on user modifications to the complete song. The controller may be internal or external to a computing system, and may be a touchpad. The user input may modify music output corresponding to one or a plurality of instruments, audio samples or microphone input. The modified song may be stored for subsequent playback and/or played in real time as a live performance. The controller may consist of a guitar controller, a wind controller, a keyboard controller, a sequencer tool or a MIDI controller.

A system and method for managing virtual connections between devices on a network system such as a LAN, or a WAN, with or without connection to the public network, including in some cases connection through the Internet. Specifically, the invention involves a computer program that includes a graphical map of a geographical site such as an office building that allows each user using the network to select an output device such as a particular printer and establish a virtual connection between the user's workstation environment and the output device. This invention may also include means to enable the users to easily manage their own printer connections on a complex network system, giving the user more control and reducing the workload on the Information Services staff.
