A handheld control device of a system is coupled to a display screen comprising a number of lines. The device comprises a pushbutton for each line. The user can scroll through a series of possible contents of a line associated with a pushbutton, but only if the relevant pushbutton is depressed. Changing the contents of the line by the user thus becomes a coherent operation, so that the device will less readily respond to unintentional actuation of the controls.

Signal processor

A signal processor is disclosed having a program memory which stores compressed program instructions and a decoder device which decodes the compressed program instructions to form decoded program instructions for controlling functions of the signal processor. The decoder device has a programmable decoder and a fixed decoding arrangement, where the fixed decoding arrangement is non-programmable and hardwired for decoding the compressed program instructions using logical operations. The programmable decoder includes a decoder memory, such as a ROM or RAM, having cells for storing the decoded program instructions in an uncompressed form. These cells are addressed for executing programmable decoding functions of the programmable decoder. The compressed program instructions include a first number of bits for determining a category of the compressed program instructions and a second number of bits for determining the address of the cells. A control unit detects the category of the compressed program instructions and outputs a control signal to a multiplexer, which selectively connects the programmable decoder or the fixed decoding arrangement to the output of the signal processor.

A circuit arrangement for speech recognition carries out an analysis of a speech signal, extracting characteristic features. The extracted features are represented by spectral feature vectors which are compared with reference feature vectors stored for the speech signal to be recognized. The reference feature vectors are determined during a training phase in which a speech signal is recorded several times. A recognition result essentially depends on a quality of the spectral feature vectors and reference feature vectors. The invention relates to a device for generating announcement information. When the complete announcement information is generated via natural speech information, a large storage capacity is required. The device aims to enable a plurality of different announcement information to be generated without requiring a large storage capacity. To this end, there is proposed a device for generating announcement information including an input unit, a storage unit for storing natural speech information, a speech generator for generating synthetic speech information and a multiplexer for combining the natural speech information and the synthetic speech information to form the announcement information.

Matrix memories comprising row conductors and column conductors, at the intersections of which storage elements are arranged, are often tested by complete addressing of all elements. Different bit patterns are written into the memory and tested upon reading. However, when the elements arranged at the intersections are EEPROM storage cells, requiring a substantial amount of time for writing, the complete testing of the memory in this manner would be very time consuming. In accordance with the invention, therefore, only the addressing of the matrix is tested, use being made of a special test bus which can be connected to the row conductors and the column conductors via switches. As a result, not only the row conductors and column conductors themselves, but also the associated decoders and selection elements can be tested for correct operation. This principle can be applied also in the case of memories consisting of several parallel matrices, for example for memories with multibit data words, and for memories in which the matrices are subdivided into a plurality of sub-matrices.

Devices for the digital recording and reproduction of speech signals are used, for example in answering apparatus. In order to reduce the quantity of data to be stored without noticeably affecting the acoustic quality of the speech, it is proposed to encode speech signals by means of a residual signal speech encoder.
