To permit computer control, for example from a control console in a publisher's office, of the subject matter to be printed from a printing cylinder, the printing cylinder (3) has a layer of semiconductor material thereon, which, by doping, includes capacitative or inductive domains (15, 33), selectively energized in accordance with control from the computer through controllable electronic switches (16, 29), such as transistors formed in the semiconductor layer. Ferrofluidic ink can be attracted by charges onto capacitors formed in the semiconductor layer; the capacitors are charged, selectively, through the transistor electronic switches which are located and connected in a matrix. Packing densities of over 160 domains and switching elements per mm.sup.2 are readily possible and suitable, for example, for newspaper printing. Higher packing densities, for high quality printing, can be obtained by well known microelectronic technology. Further, depolarized regions are hydrophobic, and permit acceptance of printing ink, whereas polarized domains are hydrophilic, attract water, thereby permitting use of well known lithographic-type offset printing.

Electrically controllable printing form for a printing machine

In order to perform an ice-breaking operation more readily or with a defined geometry, an ice breaking aid is employed by virtue of which the ice is irradiated with high-frequency oscillations such as phonons or photons prior to the ice-breaking operation proper.

Method of enhancing an ice-breaking operation

A method and device for automatically steering a trackless vehicle along a routing or guide line. A scanner senses the position of the longitudinal centerline of the vehicle with respect to the guide line and produces a position signal. A datum transmitter produces a datum signal. A comparator compares the two signals and produces a difference signal which is used by a control unit to produce a steering signal. In producing the steering signal, the device distinguishes between influences on the vehicle position caused by interference, e.g., wind gusts and rough roads, and influences caused by curvature of the guide line. The steering signal causes adjustment of the steering angle of the vehicle to minimize the distance between a reference point on the longitudinal centerline of the vehicle and the guide line.

Method and device for automatically steering a vehicle

To suppress shocks from being transferred to the walls of a cylinder (3) of a printing machine, when grooves (7) on the cylinder roll-off against another cylinder, and particularly against the edges of another groove (8) in an engaging cylinder, a damping mass (11) is filled within the cylinder which additionally retains an elastic shaft (12) on which an inertia mass (13) is secured. The inertia mass, preferably in form of a ball, is excentrally located on the elastic shaft (12) and touches at a point C the inner surface of the wall (10) of the cylinder (3) when the cylinder is in engagement with another one. The impact or shock, at the edge of the groove (7) rolls off against an engagement cylinder causes the inertia mass (13) to be accelerated towards the center of the cylinder, typically upwardly, and to place this mass into oscillations. These oscillations are damped by the damping mass (11) thus preventing transfer of oscillatory bending movement to the wall of the cylinder, and hence to a covering ( 5) thereon, which, for example, may be a printing rubber blanket, a printing plate, or the like.

Shock and oscillation reducing apparatus for printing machine cylinders

A coupling bearing for rotors running above critical speed, in which the bearing encloses the rotor and is connected and disconnected depending on radial rotor movements. A gap is provided between the coupling bearing and the rotor, and this gap has a predetermined space width which is at least as large as the maximum amplitude of the rotor in the nominal operating range. A starting bushing permits brief sliding of contacting surfaces, and is made of a highly wear-resistant and self-lubricating material of low heat conductivity. The starting bushing, furthermore is ball bearing mounted. The coupling bearing is in the form of a ball bearing connected with a damping device, and the inner race of the ball bearing seats the starting bushing. The inner race and the balls of the bearing are made of material of low specific gravity, high heat conductivity and high temperature resistance. The inner and outer races of the ball bearing, moreover, are made of light-weight material containing a temperature-resistant lubricant, and the outer race of the ball bearing is contained in a damper body of high heat conductivity.

At least one critical frequency altering means in the form of springs, dampers and masses may be operatively connected, singly or in combination, to the rotor to thereby produce a change in the frequencies and/or amplitudes of the rotor, or in the critical rotational speeds and their amplitudes.

An electromagnet including a magnetizable yoke, an exciter coil system, and a movable armature. The end surface of at least one pole shoe carried by the yoke is divided into at least two discontinuous partial surfaces separated by a space. At least one control coil system includes a coil at least partially within the space and arranged to produce magnetic flux passing through the partial surfaces in opposite directions.

A high-speed rotation system susceptible to vibration includes a relatively thin and flexible shaft which has first and second ends, a rotating member disposed on the first end of the shaft, and a planetary gear including a torque-transmitting sun gear which is connected to and restrains the second end of the shaft. A magnetic bearing surrounds at least part of the rotating member for damping the vibration of the rotation system.

An installation for the drive and support of a disc-shaped rotor. The installation for the drive and for the bearing support of a disc-shaped rotor incorporates a constructional element for the magnetic, and particularly electromagnetic, support and drive, which annularly encompasses the rotor in a ring-like configuration, wherein the magnetic support serves primarily for absorption of the radial forces, and that the installation encompasses an aerostatic and/or aerodynamic bearing support for primarily absorbing or receiving the axial forces, and whose rotating portion forms an integral unit with the rotor.

Drive and bearing support for a disc-shaped rotor

A rotary body supported at one or both ends by bearing means, either the body or a bearing means being resilient. An extension is located between each end of the rotary body and its respective bearing means, the extension having a smaller diameter than the rotary body and rotatable with the body. The mass per unit axial length of the extension is smaller than the mass per unit length of the rotary body.

Vertically supported rotary body

An electromagnetic drive for rotary bodies including a stationary member having at least two coils and a revolving member arranged for rotation with respect thereto. The coils are supplied with a current signal for causing rotation of the revolving member and a sensing arrangement senses the position of the revolving member with respect to the stationary member and provides an output indicative thereof. A control device is responsive to the output of sensing arrangement for supplying an additional current signal to the coils effect positional control of the revolving member.
