A sheet-guiding apparatus for a turning device in a rotary printing machine guides a sheet being printed to prevent smearing. The turning device includes a turning drum and at least one sheet-guiding cylinder. The turning drum and the sheet-guiding cylinder define a sheet transfer region and a sheet transfer path. The sheet-guiding apparatus comprises an air blower means, at least one blower/suction device, and a lower sheet-guiding device. The air blower means, which is arranged upstream of the sheet transfer region, includes a first set of air outlet openings for directing compressed air toward the sheet-guiding cylinder and at least a second air outlet opening for directing compressed air into the transfer region. The blower/suction device, which is disposed within the sheet-bearing surface of the turning drum, communicates with a plurality of openings disposed in the sheet-bearing surface and is coupled to a pneumatic device. The lower sheet-guiding device is disposed below the sheet transfer path and is switchable between providing compressed air and providing air suction. The air blower means, blower/suction device, and the lower sheet-guiding device cooperate to provide a combination of air blow and suction for guiding the sheet in the sheet transfer process.

Sheet guiding apparatus for a turning device in a rotary printing

An apparatus for cleaning a roller nip in rotary printing machines, which is filled with a fluid, includes at least one nozzle arranged above the liquid in the nip with the nozzle oriented at an angle (.alpha.) with respect to the longitudinal direction of the nip so as to be directed towards the fluid. Blowing air is fed to the nozzle via a control valve and causes the fluid to flow along the nip and off at least one end of the rollers.

Apparatus for cleaning a roller nip in rotary printing machines

A method and system are provided for aligning the lateral edge of sheets fed to a printing press. The lateral position of a sheet is detected. A slidable suction device beneath the sheet is operated to pull the sheet toward a lateral abutment at a constant speed, the suction being applied at an individual time for each sheet in accordance with the detected position. Suction pressure is released when the sheet reaches the side lay, such that suction pressure is only applied for the time necessary to place the sheet in proper registration.

Method and system for the lateral alignment of sheets

A sheet conveyor table for delivering sheets from a printing press has upper and lower portions. The lower portion is secured adjacent a delivery unit of the printing press and the upper portion is releasably attached to the lower portion through a swivel joint and catch coupling. An endless conveyor belt is trained about a pair of guide rollers and a tensioning roller on the upper portion for continuous movement imparted by the rotational force of a drive wheel mounted on the lower portion of the table. A guide plate extends substantially parallel and closely adjacent the conveyor path for guiding sheet materials during transfer. A wedge-shaped suction aperture in the guide plate is adapted for communication with a vacuum source, thereby creating a downwardly directed suction force for braking and guiding the sheet materials during transfer. The suction aperture diverges with respect to the direction of travel of the conveyor belt, so as to create a continually increased vacuum force on the sheets during transfer and thereby progressively brake the sheet movement.

In order to create a thermal regulator for a printing form (2) for anaqueous offset printing, a blast box (3) is provided for the blowing of the printing form (2) with tempered air, in which fans (4) and a cooler (5) are mounted, which is supplied from outside with a coolant (7) from a cooling installation (6), the cooling of the cooler (5) being regulated in dependence on a temperature of a regulator (8).

A conveying cable for conveying sheets includes a suction chamber with a supporting surface defining a shallow groove having a plurality of suction openings therein over which a perforated suction belt moves. A plurality of vent openings separately communicating with atmosphere are disposed adjacent the belt edges to prevent the sheets from being sucked against the table surface. The perforations in the suction belt preferably take the form of staggered slots which leave imperforate zones free along the center and adjacent the edges of the belt to help reduce undesirable belt stretching and the suction openings in the supporting surface increase in size adjacent the delivery end of the table.

A device for seating and spreading a conveyed sheet evenly on an impression cylinder of a printing press thereby to prevent fluttering which includes a pair of pipes arranged parallel to one another in axially extending position above the cylinder. The pipes are bridged by a top wall and end walls to enclose the space between them to form a plenum chamber adjacent the surface of the cylinder, the under surfaces of the pipes defining, with the surface of the cylinder, an air gap of constant width. The outer side walls of the pipes each have a flat upper portion and an inwardly curved lower portion smoothly continuous therewith, each flat upper portion having a skirt arranged parallel thereto in overlapping relation to define nozzles in the form of a narrow slit which extends continuously along each pipe and which is in communication therewith so that air supplied to the pipes under pressure is directed radially inward along and parallel to each side wall, the air being diverted by the Coanda effect inwardly into the air gaps for building up a pressure head in the chamber. Such pressure head presses upon and tends to spread a conveyed sheet evenly on the surface of the cylinder. The chamber is vented through a restriction to limit the pressure which is in the chamber and which is applied to the sheet.

An ink roller for a printing press having a cylindrical outer shell presenting a roller surface and having a control fluid-displacing core, a hollow cylindrical partition being interposed between the shell and the core to define inner and outer annular passageways connected in series having respective inlet and outlet openings. A source of cooling fluid is connected to the inlet opening so that a feed stream of cooling fluid flows longitudinally through the inner passage and turns around to form a cooling stream flowing in counterflow relation through the outer passage. The cylindrical partition is formed of conductive material so that heat absorbed at a given region of the roller surface by the cooling stream flows radially inwardly for absorption by the feed stream at substantially the same rate, so that the cooling stream has only minimum net gain or loss of heat; this tends to equalize the temperature along the length of the cooling stream and hence along the length of the roller surface. In the preferred embodiment of the invention the thermal conductivity of the cylindrical partition in the radial direction is so varied as a function of length that the rate of heat transfer radially through the partition from the cooling stream to the feed stream over each unit of length of the partition is substantially equal.

A device for removing curling tendency in sheets, particularly sheets fed to printing presses, in which the sheets are conveyed over two beam-like supporting members arranged transversely with respect to the direction of sheet movement and presenting supporting surfaces which are spaced parallel to one another on one side of the sheet to define a groove in between them. Suction is applied within the groove to draw a passing sheet downwardly into the groove to produce a relatively sharp concave bend in the sheet thereby to counteract the curling tendency. The cross-sectional profile of the groove is variable by a movable member to vary the profile of the groove and hence the degree of sharpness of the bend, thereby permitting the degree of correction to be varied while keeping the suction substantially constant. The device, in both preferred and alternate embodiments, has provision for removing curling tendency in opposite directions.

Device for the flattening of sheets by means of suction

A delivery arrangement including a conveyor and take-off mechanism for delivering a series of printed sheets onto a pile in which nozzles are provided distributed along the width of a sheet, for directing a jet of air to the underside in a direction opposite the sheet movement. A guide plate spaced under the sheet and extending upstream from the nozzles serves to confine the jet. Formed on the surface of the guide plate are a plurality of upraised islands, spaced from one another over the area of the guide plate, the islands presenting plateau surfaces at approximately the same elevation above the guide plate. Consequently, when a sheet is sucked downwardly by the jet of air it engages the plateau surfaces in light frictional engagement to apply frictional drag to the body of the sheet. The source of pressurized air for the nozzles includes means for automatically varying the pressure, and hence the frictional drag, in accordance with the speed of the press. In a preferred embodiment the plateau surfaces, which are spaced both laterally and longitudinally of the guide plate, occupy less than half of the total area of the guide plate and at least a portion of the guide plate is formed with a gradual curvature in a direction downwardly away from the sheet.
