A fluoride sensor includes an aluminum layer situated on a distal end face of an optical fiber. A light source directs light into the optical fiber at a proximal end and reflected light from the aluminum layer at the distal end face is directed by the fiber to a detector. A rate of change of a detector signal is processed to produce an estimate of a concentration of fluoride.

Optical fiber-based sensor for determining the concentration of fluoride in water

Fiber optic sensors include sensor regions in which an optical phase is modulated by an analyte to be detected. A long period fiber grating (LPG) is coupled to a coating that is arranged to selectively interact with the analyte. The resulting phase change is detected based on a transmission spectrum associated with the LPG so that analyte is detected and quantified. A plurality of such sensors is distributed along a fiber to form a sensor array that can be situated to detect analyte at a plurality of discrete regions.

Fiber optic sensor for measurement of carbon dioxide

A sensing device for determining the presence of hydrogen peroxide is disclosed. The sensing device comprises a light guide having a distal portion terminating at a light guide tip and a proximal portion, wherein the light guide tip is proximal to a layer of Prussian blue (PB), which is pure (or essentially free of contaminants). The sensing device produces a fast linear response and is durable, due to the robustness and purity of the PB. The PB is chemically deposited proximal to, or on, the light guide tip using a single-source precursor technique. Methods of making and using the device also are disclosed herein.

Sensing device for spectroscopic detection of hydrogen peroxide

A sensing device for detecting a physical parameter exemplified by pressures, strains, temperatures, indices of refraction, and combinations thereof. The sensing device comprises a probe having a housing for sealably mounting therein an optical fiber. The optical fiber is provided at its distal end with at least two spaced apart fiber Bragg gratings. The proximal end of the probe is engagable with a holder, and is in communication with fiber Bragg grating interrogation systems. Spacers and seals may be provided about the optical fiber between the fiber Bragg gratings. An orifice may be provided and sealed with a resilient membrane to provide a contained airspace around each fiber Bragg grating. The contained airspace may be optionally filled with a fluid or a gas.

Multi-point pressure sensor and uses thereof

A pressure sensor for connecting to a detector is provided. The pressure sensor comprises: an optical fibre, having a distal end with a distal plane for sensing pressure, a proximal end for communicating with a patch cord, and an In-fibre Bragg grating (FBG) therebetween; a housing, having a distal aperture, a proximal aperture and a bore therebetween, and sized to accept the optical fibre; an annular ring, forming a flexible seal between said optical fibre and housing at least distal to the FBG and a holder for retaining the housing. The FBG is housed in the housing such that in use, axial strain is transferred to said In-fibre Bragg grating housed within said housing by pressure exerted on the distal plane.

Pressure sensor for biological fluids and use thereof

An optical fiber sensing device for detecting physical parameters such as pressures, strains and temperatures comprises a probe housing therein an optical fiber. The distal end of the probe houses a distal portion of the optical fiber having a section provided with a fiber Bragg grating. The proximal end of the probe is mounted into a holder. The optical fiber is sealably mounted into the probe housing with a first seal overlaid the proximal portion of the optical fiber The seal may extend to about the proximal end of the optical fiber section with the Bragg grating. A second seal is overlaid the distal portion of the optical fiber and extends from the distal end of the probe to about the distal end of the optical fiber section with the Bragg grating. The proximal end of the probe is communicable with a fiber Bragg grating interrogation system.

This invention relates to a refiner force sensor for refiners used in the pulp and paper industry, to a refining apparatus, and to a method of measuring force acting on a refiner bar in a refiner.

Refiner force sensor

This invention relates to an apparatus for separating an original feed solution such as seawater into a product solution of decreased concentration (relatively fresh water) and an exhaust solution of increased concentration. The apparatus includes an annular reverse osmosis membrane means, contained in an annular pressure vessel that is housed in a rotor assembly. The rotor is arranged to spin on an axle and is located within an evacuated shroud. The apparatus further includes supply means for supplying the original feed solution to the reverse osmosis membrane, exhaust means at an outermost radius of the reverse osmosis membrane for removing the exhaust solution from the reverse osmosis membrane, product removal means at an innermost radius of the reverse osmosis membrane for removing the product solution from the reverse osmosis membrane and means for creating a pressure differential across the reverse osmosis membrane to separate the original feed solution into the product solution and the exhaust solution. The supply means and the exhaust means are relatively axially and radially spaced such that the feed solution travels along a combined radial and axial flow-path.

Centrifugal reverse-osmosis desalination unit incorporating an annular

The invention disclosed is a desalination apparatus for removing salt from seawater. The apparatus operates on the principle of reverse-osmosis whereby a feed solution containing seawater is separated into a product solution of decreased salt concentration and an exhaust solution of increased concentration. An evacuated enclosure is included to reduce windage losses and power consumption.
