The present invention relates to a filler comprising calcium salt and cellulose derivative having a degree of substitution of net ionic groups up to about 0.65, wherein the filler is substantially free from fibers or fibrils of cellulose or lignocellulose. The invention also relates to a filler comprising calcium salt and a cellulose derivative having a degree of substitution of net ionic groups up to about 0.65, wherein the cellulose derivative contains cationic groups.

The invention relates to a water-based drilling fluid composition comprising a carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), wherein the CMC is characterized by forming a gel at 25&#xb0; C. after high-shear dissolution in a 0.3 wt % aqueous sodium chloride solution, the final content of the CMC in the aqueous sodium chloride solution being I wt % for a CMC having a degree of polymerization of &#x3e;4,000, 1.5. wt % for a CMC having a DP of &#x3e;3,000-4,000, 2 wt % for a CMC having a DD of 1,500-3,000, and 4 wt % for a CMC having a DP of &#x3c;1,500, the gel being a fluid having a storage modulus (G') which exceeds the loss modulus (G&#x2033;) over the entire frequency region of 0.01-10 Hz when measured on an oscillatory rheometer operating at a strain of 0.2.

Use of CMC in drilling fluids

A hydrophobically modified anionic cellulose ether obtainable by a process comprising reacting an alkali metal cellulose with at least three alkylating reagents A, B, and C. Reagent A is selected from the group of haloacetic acids, alkali metal haloacetates, alkali metal vinyl sulfonates, and vinyl sulfonic acid. Reagent B has the formula R &mdash;(OCH CH(R )) &mdash;P, wherein R represents a C -C group, R is hydrogen or a methyl group, n is 0-2, and P represents a glycidyl ether group, a 3-halo-2-hydroxypropyl ether group, a 1,2-epoxy group, or a halide, and reagent C has the formula R &mdash;(OCH CH(R )) &mdash;P, wherein R represents a C -C group, m is 0-10, and R and P have the meaning as described above.
