The present invention relates to a method for identifying a solid solution ceramic material of a plurality of perovskite compounds which exhibits an electric field induced strain derived from a reversible phase transition, as well as a method for making such ceramic materials and ceramic materials obtainable therefrom. In particular, the present invention is directed to a method of identifying a solid solution ceramic material of at least three perovskite compounds which exhibits an electric field induced strain derived from a reversible phase transition; said method comprising the steps of: i) determining a molar ratio of at least one tetragonal perovskite compound to at least one non-tetragonal perovskite compound which, when combined to form a solid solution, provides a ceramic material comprising a major portion of a tetragonal phase having an axial ratio c/a of greater than 1.005 to 1.04; and ii) determining a molar ratio of at least one additional non-tetragonal perovskite compound to the combination of perovskite compounds from step i) at the determined molar ratio which, when combined to form a solid solution, provides a ceramic material comprising a major portion of a pseudo-cubic phase having an axial ratio c/a of from 0.995 to 1.005 and/or a rhombohedral angle of 90&#xb1;0.5 degrees.

Methods of identifying and preparing a ceramic material exhibiting an electric field induced strain

The present invention relates to a bismuth-based solid solution ceramic material, as well as a process for preparing the ceramic material and uses thereof, particularly in an actuator component employed, for example, in a droplet deposition apparatus. In particular, the present invention relates to a ceramic material having a general chemical formula (I): (I): x(BiNa)TiO-y(BiK)TiO-zSrHfO-zSrZrO, wherein x+y+Z+Z=1; y, (z+z)&#x2260;0; x&#x2265;0. In embodiments, the present invention also relates to a ceramic material having a general chemical formula (II): x(Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3-y(Bi0.5K0.5)TiO3-y(Bi0.5K0.5)TiO3-ZiSrHfO3-z2SrZrO3, wherein x+y+z&#x2212;i+z2=1; x, y, fa+z2)&#x2260;0; as well as a ceramic material of general formula (III): y(BiK)TiO-zSrHfO-zSrZrO, wherein y+z,+z=1; y, (z+z)&#x2260;0.

Ceramic material comprising a pseudo-cubic phase, a process for preparing and uses of the same

A method of forming a micro-structure involves forming a multi-layered structure including i) an oxidizable material layer on a substrate and ii) another oxidizable material layer on the oxidizable material layer. The oxidizable material layer is formed of an oxidizable material having an expansion coefficient, during oxidation, that is more than 1. The method further involves forming a template, including a plurality of pores, from the other oxidizable material layer, and growing a nano-pillar inside each pore. The nano-pillar has a predefined length that terminates at an end. A portion of the template is selectively removed to form a substantially even plane that is oriented in a position opposed to the substrate. A material is deposited on at least a portion of the plane to form a film layer thereon, and the remaining portion of the template is selectively removed to expose the nano-pillars.

Method of forming a micro-structure

actuator component for a droplet deposition head made up of a number of patterned layers, each layer extending in a plane normal to a layering direction, with the layers being stacked one upon another in said layering direction. A row of fluid chambers is formed within the layers, with the row extending in a row direction, which is substantially perpendicular to the layering direction. Each fluid chamber is provided with a respective nozzle and a respective actuating element, which is actuable to cause the ejection of fluid from the chamber in question through the corresponding one of the nozzles. A row of inlet passageways is also formed within the layers of the actuator component, with the row extending in the row direction. Each inlet passageway is fluidically connected so as to supply fluid to a respective one of said fluid chambers. In some embodiments, either a row of outlet passageways or a second row of inlet passageways is additionally formed within the layers; in either case, such row extends in the row direction. Where outlet passageways are present, each is fluidically connected so as to receive fluid from a respective one of said fluid chambers. At least one of the rows of passageways is staggered, whereby at least some of the members of the staggered row in question are offset from their neighbours in an offset direction for the staggered row in question that is perpendicular to the row direction. The row of fluid chambers may also be staggered.

Droplet deposition head and actuator component therefor

The present disclosure is drawn to a piezoelectric thin film stack and method of preparing the same. The piezoelectric thin film stack can comprise a substrate with an oxide application surface, a metal oxide adhesive blend layer applied to the oxide application surface, and a piezoelectric film applied directly to the metal oxide adhesive blend layer.

A method of adhering a cover layer to a substrate includes forming an array of nano-structures on a substrate. A flowable material is applied to the substrate, the flowable material substantially enveloping the nano-structures on the substrate. The flowable material is solidified to form a cover layer on the substrate, the cover layer being anchored to the substrate via the nano-structures.

Adhesion-promoting surface

In an example of a method for making a nano-structure, an aluminum layer is partially anodized to form a porous anodic alumina structure. The aluminum layer is positioned on an oxidizable material layer. The porous anodic alumina structure is exposed to partial anisotropic etching to form tracks within the porous anodic alumina structure. A remaining portion of the aluminum layer is further anodized to form paths where the tracks are formed. The oxidizable material layer is anodized to from an oxide, where the oxide grows through the paths formed within the porous anodic alumina structure to form a set of super nano-pillars.

Nano-structure and method of making the same

The present disclosure is drawn to a thin film stack including a substrate, a metal layer, and an adhesive layer. The adhesive layer comprises a blend of zinc oxide and tin oxide, and the adhesive layer is adhered between the substrate and the metal layer.
