Weathering apparatus with UV radiation sources and radiation sensors containing a double-calibrated UV sensor A weathering apparatus has one or more UV radiation sources () and one or more first sensors (), which are calibrated for a first spectral sensitivity range. In a first aspect of the invention, the sensor or one of the first sensors () is calibrated in such a way that the radiation power of a spectral range which is located within the first spectral sensitivity range can be determined from its output signal. In a second aspect of the invention, a second sensor () is provided, which is calibrated for a second spectral sensitivity range.

The usual xenon radiation source in conventional weathering testers is replaced by UV light-emitting diodes (LEDs) (). These can be used to provide a good approximation of the UV component of the solar spectrum, in particular when different types of UV light-emitting diodes () with different emission characteristics are employed. Optionally, further light-emitting diodes in the visible spectral range may also be used in order to cover other parts of the solar spectrum. The light-emitting diodes () may be mounted on a flexible printed circuit board (), which may in turn be fitted on a tubular holding body (). The flexible printed circuit board carrying the light-emitting diodes may also be placed on other substrates () which are pliable in a geometrically stable way, so that that they can be arranged at a uniform distance from material samples with a particular surface topology, in order to obtain uniform exposure.

In this method, the surface to be investigated is first of all exposed to collimated light and the radiation rejected therefrom supplied to a position-resolving image processing means. Then, a mask is generated on the basis of the image supplied by the image processing means, said mask having masked regions being defined by relatively bright areas of said image and unmasked regions being defined by relatively dark areas of said image. Now, the surface to be investigated is exposed to diffuse light and the radiation rejected therefrom supplied to the image processing means, with only the radiation from the unmasked regions being taken into consideration for analyzing purposes.
