An LCD display has a programmable backlight device that produces multiple different color fields from multiple different phosphor elements. The backlight device can be a low resolution FED device. The phosphor is applied by an electrophotographic screening process or direct electrostatic screening process. The FED device can further incorporate a wide gamut phosphor.

A RGB phosphor system for a carbon nanotube (CNT)/field emission device (FED) display operated between about 4-10 kV. The RGB phosphor system is formed on an interior surface of a screen of the CNT/FED display. The RGB phosphor system includes ZnS:Cu, Al (green phosphor), ZnS:Ag,Cl (blue phosphor) and YOS:Eu(red phosphor). The average particle size for each of the green, blue and red phosphors should be about 3-4 microns.

Method of developing a latent charge image

The invention includes an apparatus 40, 140 for developing a latent charge image formed on a photoreceptor 36 disposed on an interior surface of a faceplate panel 12. The apparatus 40, 140 comprises a developer tank 42 having a sidewall 44 closed at one end by a bottom portion 46 and at the other end by a panel support 48 having an opening 50 therethrough to provide access to the faceplate panel 12. The back electrode 52 has a potential applied thereto to establish an electrostatic drift field between the back electrode and the photoreceptor 36, which is grounded. Triboelectrically-charged, dry-powdered, light emitting phosphor material, having a charge of the same polarity as the potential applied to the back electrode 52, is injected into the developer tank 42, between the back electrode 52 and the faceplate panel 12. The triboelectrically-charged phosphor material is directed toward the photoreceptor 36 on the faceplate panel 12 by the applied electrostatic drift field. Panel skirt sidewall shields 66, 68 are disposed around a peripheral sidewall 18 of the faceplate panel 12 to repel the triboelectrically-charged phosphor material from the panel sidewall 18. The method of developing the latent charge image formed on the photoreceptor 36 that is disposed on an interior surface of a faceplate panel 12 includes the steps of placing the faceplate panel 12 on the panel support 48 of the apparatus 40, 140 and positioning the panel skirt sidewall shield means 66, 68 in proximity to the sidewall 18 of the of the faceplate panel 12. The photoreceptor 36 is grounded and a potential is applied to the back electrode 52. Triboelectrically-charged phosphor materials, having a charge of the same polarity as the potential applied to the back electrode 52 are introduced into the developer tank 42, between the back electrode 52 and the faceplate panel 12. The phosphor material is directed toward the photoreceptor 36 on the faceplate panel 12 by the applied electrostatic drift field and repelled from the sidewall 18 of the faceplate panel by the panel skirt sidewall shields 66, 68.

Apparatus and method of developing a latent charge image

A spray module 40 for manufacturing a cathode-ray tube (CRT) 10 comprises an enclosure 42 having sidewalls 44, a base 46 attached to the sidewalls 44, for closing one end thereof, and a panel support 48 having an opening, 50 therethrough. The panel support 48 is attached to an opposite end of the sidewalls 44. The spray module 40 has at least one electrostatic spray gun 36 therein for spraying charged screen structure material through the opening 50 in the panel support 48 and onto an interior surface of a faceplate panel 12 of the CRT 10. The spray module 40 includes a primary shield assembly 55 disposed within the enclosure 42 and extending through the opening 50 in the panel support 48. A secondary shield assembly 56 also is disposed within the enclosure 42 The primary and secondary shield assemblies 55 and 56, respectively, direct the charged screen structure material toward the interior surface of the panel 12, thereby increasing the transfer efficiency of the spray gun 36. A collecting tray 54 also is utilized to catch the spent spray which falls to the bottom of the spray module 40. The tray 54 is inclined toward a drain 100 that directs the spent material out of the spray module 40.

In accordance with the present invention, a method for manufacturing a color CRT (10) having a faceplate panel (12) is disclosed. The method includes the steps of forming a photoreceptor (36) on an interior surface of a viewing faceplate (17); establishing a substantially uniform electrostatic charge on the photoreceptor (36); and exposing selected areas of the photoreceptor (36) to visible light to form a latent charge image. The process further includes the steps of developing the latent charge image on the photoreceptor (36) by depositing (212, 213, 214) thereon charged phosphor particles; monitoring the width (218) of the deposition of the charged phosphor particles; and terminating the deposition (226, 227, 228) of the charged phosphor particles when predetermined process parameters (222, 224) are satisfied. A phosphor deposition monitor (PDM) apparatus (90) for monitoring the deposition of the charged phosphor particles on the latent charge image, formed on the photoreceptor (36), also is described. The PDM apparatus (90) includes monitoring means (96, 99, 123) external to the viewing faceplate (17) for measuring the width (218) of the deposition of the charged phosphor particles. Control means (122) responsive to the monitoring means (96, 99,123) is utilized for terminating the deposition (226, 228) of the charged phosphor particles when the predetermined process parameters (222, 224) are satisfied.

Method and apparatus for manufacturing a color CRT

In accordance with the present invention, a method of electro-photographically manufacturing a luminescent screen assembly on an interior surface of a faceplate panel 12 for a color CRT 10 includes the steps of coating the interior surface of the faceplate panel with a volatilizable, organic conductive solution to form an organic conductive (OC) layer 32, and overcoating the OC layer with a volatilizable, organic photoconductive solution to form an organic photoconductive (OPC) layer 34. A method of manufacturing a luminescent screen assembly on an interior surface of a faceplate panel 12 for a color CRT 10 includes the steps of uniformly applying a solution of a material to form an organic conductive (OC) layer and overcoating the OC layer with a solution to form an organic photoconductive (OPC) layer, on the interior surface of the faceplate panel. The OPC layer 34 is conditioned by directing a stream of dry gas thereon to warm the OPC layer to a preheat temperature, while maintaining the panel at a panel temperature less than the preheat temperature. The OPC layer is exposed to IR radiation to rapidly increase the temperature of the OPC layer to a curing temperature, greater than the preheat temperature, to remove some of the volatilizable constituents from the OPC layer, without substantially increasing the temperature of the panel. The OPC layer is then cooled by directing at least one stream of cool gas onto the surface thereof, to lower the temperature of the OPC layer to a subsequent processing temperature.

The developing apparatus includes a developing chamber, having a support surface for supporting the output window, a screen structure material reservoir for storing, deagglomerating and feeding the screen structure material, and a triboelectric gun assembly communicating with the reservoir. The gun assembly triboelectric charges and imparts a desired charge polarity to the screen structure material. The gun assembly further includes at least one material dispersing nozzle spaced from the support surface for distributing the charged material for deposition onto the latent image.

In accordance with the present invention, a method of electrophotographically manufacturing a luminescent screen assembly for a color CRT 10 on an interior surface of a faceplate panel 12 is described. A volatilizable organic conductive (OC) layer 32 is provided on the interior surface of the panel and a volatilizable organic photoconductive (OPC) layer 34 overlies the OC layer 32. The method includes the steps of: establishing a substantially uniform electrostatic charge on the OPC layer; exposing selected areas of the OPC layer to visible light to affect the charge thereon; developing the selected areas of the OPC layer with a triboelectrically charged, dry-powdered, first color-emitting phosphor; sequentially repeating the charging, exposing and developing sequence for triboelectrically charged, dry-powdered, second and third color-emitting phosphors to form a luminescent screen comprising picture elements of triads of color-emitting phosphors; fixing the phosphors to the underlying OPC layer with a suitable fixative; filming the phosphors; and aluminizing the filmed phosphors. The present method is an improvement over prior methods because the fixing step utilizes an electrostatic spray to uniformly contact the phosphors and the underlying OPC layer with the fixative, without moving the phosphors.

Method of manufacturing a luminescent screen for a CRT

In accordance with the present invention, a method of electro-photographically manufacturing a luminescent screen assembly for a color CRT 10 on an interior surface of a faceplate panel 12 is described. A volatilizable, organic conductive (OC) layer 32 is provided on the interior surface of the panel and a volatilizable, organic photoconductive (OPC) layer 34 overlies the OC layer. The method includes the steps of: establishing a substantially uniform electrostatic charge on the OPC layer; exposing selected areas of the OPC layer to visible light to affect the charge thereon; developing the selected areas of the OPC layer with a triboelectrically charged dry-powdered, screen structure materials; fixing the screen structure materials to the underlying OPC layer with a suitable fixative; filming the screen structure materials; aluminizing the screen; and baking the aluminized screen. The present method is an improvement over prior methods because the relative humidity (RH) during the charging step is maintained above a humidity level below which the performance of the OC layer is negatively impacted by a reduction in its ion transfer mobility which makes it difficult to apply a usable corona charge to the overlying OPC layer, and below a humidity level above which the OC layer swells causing cracking in the OPC layer. Additionally, the RH during the development step is maintained below a humidity above which the screen structure materials can absorb water and macro-agglomerate, thereby changing the charge-to-mass ration of the screen structure materials to a value which adversely affects the deposition thereof.

In accordance with the present invention, a method of electrophotographically manufacturing a luminescent screen assembly on an interior surface of a faceplate panel 12 of a color CRT 10 comprises the steps of coating the interior surface of the panel with a volatilizable, organic conductive material to form an organic conductive (OC) layer 32, and overcoating the OC layer 32 with a volatilizable, photoconductive material to form an organic photoconductive (OPC) layer 34. Then, a substantially uniform voltage is established on the OPC layer 34, and selected areas of the OPC layer 34 are exposed to visible light to affect the voltage thereon, without affecting the voltage on the unexposed area of the OPC layer 34. Next, triboelectrically charged, light-absorbing screen structure material is deposited onto the unexposed area of the OPC layer 34 to form a substantially continuous matrix 23 of light-absorbing material having open areas therein. The present method is an improvement over prior methods in that the present method includes the additional steps of forming a planarizing layer 35, 135 on the OPC layer 34; overcoating the planarizing layer 35, 135 with a second coating of the volatilizable, organic conductive material to form a second OC layer 132, and then overcoating the second OC layer 132 with a second coating of the volatilizable, organic photoconductive material to form a second OPC layer 134. The phosphor materials are deposited onto a suitable charged and exposed second OPC layer 134 so that the phosphors completely overlie the openings in the matrix 23 and overlap at least a portion of the matrix adjacent to the openings.

In accordance with the present invention, a method of electrophotographically manufacturing a luminescent screen assembly on a photoreceptor disposed on an interior surface of a faceplate panel for a color CRT includes the steps of: charging the photoreceptor to establish a substantially uniform electrostatic voltage thereon; positioning the panel on an exposure device having a light source therein; exposing selected areas of the photoreceptor to visible light from the light source to affect the voltage thereon, without affecting the voltage on the unexposed area of the photoreceptor; and depositing a triboelectrically charged, first color-emitting phosphor onto the selected areas of the photoreceptor. The charging, positioning, exposing and depositing steps are repeated for a second and a third triboelectrically charged, color-emitting phosphor. The present method is an improvement over prior methods because after each of the phosphor deposition and panel recharging steps, the light source is offset in the exposure device by an amount determined by the voltage difference between the photoreceptor and the phosphor, or phosphors, previously deposited onto the panel, thereby counteracting the repulsive effect of the previously deposited phosphor and minimizing the misregister of subsequently deposited phosphors.
