A method for controlling vehicle energy consumption includes identifying, using a cumulative net energy consumption of a vehicle traversing a route, one or more route segments of the route being traversed by the vehicle. The method also includes determining, for each route segment of the one or more route segments, a vehicle energy consumption profile and determining, for each of the one or more route segments, a profile for a target vehicle speed based on at least one route characteristic and a corresponding vehicle energy consumption profile. The method also includes, for a respective route segment of the one or more route segments generating one or more torque commands based on at least the target vehicle speed profile corresponding to the respective route segment, and selectively controlling, using the one or more torque commands, vehicle propulsion of the vehicle to achieve the target vehicle speed profile.

System and method for controlling vehicle energy consumption using segmented route optimization

A method for estimating a remaining range of a vehicle battery charge includes identifying at least one route characteristic of a portion of a selected route, determining a vehicle energy consumption profile for a vehicle, and determining a current state of charge of a vehicle battery of the vehicle. The method also includes determining, for the selected route, a route energy consumption profile and calculating an estimated remaining charge for the vehicle battery at an end of the selected route based on the state of charge of the vehicle battery and the route energy consumption profile. The method also includes, in response to a determination that the estimated remaining charge is less than a lower limit of the vehicle battery charge range, determining a target vehicle speed profile based on the at least one route characteristic, the vehicle energy consumption profile, and the state of charge of the vehicle battery.

A method of estimating the quantity of secondary reaction airflow supplied to the exhaust manifold of an internal combustion engine by an air injection reaction (AIR) system models airflows in an AIR pump, an AIR valve, and a plenum coupling the pump to the valve. The pump flow is modeled based on the pump speed (or pump motor voltage), the pump inlet air temperature and the pressure ratio across the pump, and the valve flow is modeled based on the pressure ratio across the valve and the valve inlet air temperature. The plenum pressure used in the pump and valve pressure ratios is modeled based on the net plenum airflow and the plenum air temperature. The estimated AIR airflow is useful for managing the air/fuel ratio in the engine exhaust system and enhancing the reliability of AIR diagnostics.

Method of estimating airflow in an air injection reaction system

An improved method of estimating the gas pressure in the exhaust manifold of an internal combustion engine characterizes the engine exhaust system as a restriction, and estimates the exhaust manifold pressure as the gas pressure upstream of the restriction based on calibrated characteristics of the exhaust system and known characteristics of exhaust gas flow through the exhaust system. The estimation is based on a mathematical model that relates the mass flow of gas through the engine exhaust system to the exhaust manifold pressure (i.e., the upstream pressure), the barometric pressure (i.e., the downstream pressure) and the exhaust manifold gas temperature. An estimate of a pressure ratio across the exhaust system is calibrated based on the model parameters, and the exhaust manifold pressure is determined according to the product of the estimated pressure ratio and the barometric pressure.

Method of estimating gas pressure in an engine exhaust manifold

An improved method of dynamically estimating the concentration of recirculated exhaust gases in air/fuel mixture of an internal combustion engine equipped with an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. The EGR concentration at engine intake ports is separately estimated with static and dynamic models, and the EGR concentration for control purposes is determined by adjusting the result of the dynamic model based on a deviation of the dynamic model from the static model. This method provides the total EGR concentration, but can alternatively provide the inert EGR concentration through the inclusion of an exhaust inert ratio model.

Dynamic EGR concentration estimation method for a motor vehicle engine

An improved engine control utilizes a model-based technique to obtain an accurate estimate of barometric pressure with significantly reduced calibration time and effort. A mathematical model of mass air flow through the engine intake system is used to estimate the pressure ratio across the intake system as a function of mass air flow, the effective intake area, and the intake air pressure and temperature. The barometric pressure is then determined from the estimated ratio, and used in the calculation of various gas flows for control purposes. The mass air flow information may be provided by a mass air flow sensor, or alternatively, may be determined based on engine flow rate estimations. Because the estimation is model-based, no special calibration is needed to ensure accuracy at high altitudes.

Pneumatic state estimation operations for estimating gas flow and pressure at pneumatic nodes and flow branches within a reticulated engine system for engine control and diagnostic operations resolves net flow imbalances at specific pneumatic nodes and attributes such imbalances to inaccuracies in pneumatic state estimation. Inaccuracies are corrected as a function of a prior pneumatic state estimate and of a net flow imbalance at the node or a neighboring node for precision engine control and diagnostic operations.
