A design is presented for a structured cable suitable for carrying a large electric current in a cable-in-conduit comprising an assembly of rectangular stacks of thin superconducting tapes, with provisions for mechanical support of large mechanical stress and cross-flow of cooling fluid capable of removing large amounts of heat.

Blocks-in-conduit cable using high-temperature superconducting tape

A composite billet includes an array of textured-powder bars in a geometry that is compatible with assembly and drawing of a billet with LAR˜1:1. A method is presented of compressing the bars suitable for the billet geometry in an inert gas environment. Methods of drawing of the billet control the deformation of the composite billet during area-reducing draw to fine wire so that the shape and registration of the constituent bars is preserved. Lastly a method is disclosed to fabricate a cable-in-conduit conductor containing the textured-powder Bi-2212/Ag wires that enables robust forming of windings and also provides in-cable containment of a buffer gas flow under high pressure during the high-temperature heat treatment of the winding that is required to produce optimum superconducting performance in the winding.

Textured-powder Bi-2212/Ag wire and method of fabrication

A heat shield bladder includes first and second sheets of insulating material that form a bladder between the first and second sheets. At least one reflective foil is disposed within the bladder and a plurality of spacers are disposed within the bladder and positioned to space the at least one reflective foil from the first and second sheets of insulating material. Multiple reflective foils may be disposed within the bladder with spacers between each reflective foil. The heat shield bladder may be rolled into a tube shaped and used inside a pipe or formed into panels that may be used to line a vessel.

High-temperature heat shield assembly

The present disclosure relates generally to wires and more particularly to textured powder wires containing nanoscale metallic silver powder. The invention presents an improvement of the process of making compressed cores of textured-powder high-temperature superconductor previously using the micaceous high-temperature superconductor Bi-2212. Embodiments of the claimed methods are useful with the micaceous high-temperature superconductors, notably Bi2Sr2CaCu208+x (Bi-2212) and Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+x (Bi-2223) and rare earth barium copper oxide (REBCO).

Methods and compositions for fabrication of superconducting wire

Quench protected structured (QPS) superconducting cables, methods of fabricating the same, and methods of bending the same are disclosed. The methods of bending the QPS superconducting cables can be employed to produce windings. The QPS superconducting cables can rapidly drive a distributed quench to a normal conducting state in a superconducting cable if a region of the cable spontaneously quenches during high current operation.

Embodiments of the invention are directed to a method for designing the arrangement of superconducting windings for an open MRI system capable of supporting the imaging sequences for CE-BMRI and to a method of coil fabrication that can make a practical magnet from the design.

Open magnetic resonance imaging

Systems and methods for operating an accelerator driven sub-critical core. In one embodiment, a fission power generator includes a sub-critical core and a plurality of proton beam generators. Each of the proton beam generators is configured to concurrently provide a proton beam into a different area of the sub-critical core. Each proton beam scatters neutrons within the sub-critical core. The plurality of proton beam generators provides aggregate power to the sub-critical core, via the proton beams, to scatter neutrons sufficient to initiate fission in the sub-critical core.

Accelerator driven sub-critical core

A method for fabricating a wire from textured powder includes compressing a powder comprising a plurality of particles into a ribbon. The method further includes encasing the ribbon between two foil sheets to create a sheet of encased ribbon. The method additionally includes rolling the encased ribbon into a substantially cylindrical undrawn wire. The method further includes drawing the undrawn wire to create a substantially cylindrical wire having a diameter less than a diameter of the substantially cylindrical undrawn wire.

Textured powder wires

Fabrication methods for contoured polyhedral cavities for particle acceleration are disclosed. The process may include: trimming flat sheets to a conformal shape; bending the sheets to form a contour that is axially curved and azimuthally flat; and joining the sheets to form a circumferentially polyhedral cavity that is configured to support a resonant electromagnetic field at cryogenic temperatures. The resulting cavity may have ductile or even brittle superconducting materials with an axially-oriented grain structure at each point on the circumference of the cavity. As part of the assembly process, the sheets may be bonded to a supporting substrate of thermally conductive material having integrated cooling passages. The supporting substrates may be configured to have electrical contact near the cavity openings while having a small gap near the equators of the cavity. Moreover, mode-coupling channels and waveguides may be provided to extract energy from undesired deflection modes.

A superconducting coil (12) having a plurality of superconducting layers (18) is provided. Each superconducting layer (18) may have at least one superconducting element (20) which produces an operational load. An outer support structure (24) may be disposed outwardly from the plurality of layers (18). A load transfer system (22) may be coupled between at least one of the superconducting elements (20) and the outer support structure (24). The load transfer system (22) may include a support matrix structure (30) operable to transfer the operational load from the superconducting element (20) directly to the outer support structure (24). A shear release layer (40) may be disposed, in part, between the superconducting element (20) and the support matrix structure (30) for relieving a shear stress between the superconducting element (20) and the support matrix structure (30). A compliant layer (42) may also be disposed, in part, between the superconducting element (20) and the support matrix structure (30) for relieving a compressive stress on the superconducting element (20).

The magnetic resonance logging instrument (10) may comprise a superconducting magnet system (12) operable to produce a static magnetic field and disposed within a housing (19). An antenna system (14) operable to produce and sense a radio frequency magnetic field may be disposed, in part, within the housing (19) and coupled to the superconducting magnet system (12). A cryogenic cooling system (16) operable to cool the superconducting magnet system (12) may also be disposed within the housing (19).
