A process and apparatus for laying highly ordered webs wherein a fibrous strand forwarded towards a collecting surface is caused to oscillate up to an amplitude equal to the desired web width and by passing between two closely spaced plates is laid in successive courses with a very high degree of parallelism and precision. A plurality of the laying devices may be used to produce thicker or wider webs or webs having layers of differing orientation directions. Various bonding methods may be applied to the ordered webs.

Laying oriented fibrous webs

Very highly parallelized staple fibre webs are described and defined in terms of three parameters related to longitudinal and lateral cohesive properties. A process for the preparation of these webs is also described.

Staple fibre webs

Abrasion resistant segmentally bonded non woven fabrics prepared from very highly parallelised staple fibre webs are described wherein the bonding pattern is applied to the web in a defined manner related to the direction of fibre orientation in the webs.

Non woven fabrics with pattern of discrete fused areas

Fibres in a web are redistributed by ultrasonic vibration between two rigid members, for example to unite two webs together or to create a pattern of fibre orientation and fibre density; and preferably one of the members is a forwarding roll which forwards the web into a zone of increasing vibration in which fibres are bonded after redistribution.
