A switching module, intended to be used in a medium or high voltage DC breaker or a DC current limiter, includes at least one power semiconductor switching element, a gate unit arranged to turn the at least one power semiconductor switching element on and off, respectively, according to a switching control signal, and an energy storage capacitor arranged to provide power to a power supply input of the gate unit. The switching module further includes a power transformation device arranged to receive an optical power signal, to transform the optical power signal into an electrical power signal and to provide the electrical power signal to the energy storage capacitor.

Switching module for use in a device to limit and/or break the current of a power transmission or distribution line

Voltage source converter based on a chain-link cell topology including one or more phases, each of the phases having one or more series-connected chain-link cell modules connected to each other. The output voltage of the voltage source converter is controlled by control signals applied to the series-connected chain-link cell modules. In case of failure of a chain-link cell module, that module is controlled, by the control signals, such that zero output voltage is provided at its output voltage AC terminal.

Modular voltage source converter

An arrangement to determine a cell capacitor voltage value of a cell of a multi-cell power converter includes the cell and a control unit. The cell itself includes four power electronic valves interconnected as a full-bridge converter having a first and a second phase leg, where each phase leg includes a series-connection of two of the four power electronic valves and where the connection point between the two power electronic valves of each phase leg is externally connectable, a cell capacitor being connected in parallel to the first and the second phase legs, and four gate units, each being connected to a corresponding one of the power electronic valves as well as to the control unit.

Method and arrangement to determine the cell capacitor voltage of a cell of a multi-cell power converter

A voltage source converter for high power application containing a plurality of valves, each valve containing a plurality of extinguishable semiconducting elements, and a valve control unit containing a computer and a pulse-width modulator providing an executing control signal for controlling the semiconducting elements. The valve control unit includes a first control containing a first pulse-width modulator for providing a first pulse-width modulation signal, a second control containing a second pulse-width modulator for providing, a second pulse-width modulation signal, a mode detector, and a selector connected to the first and second pulse-width modulator for selecting in dependence of the mode detector the executing pulse-width modulation signal.

Electric power converter

The invention relates to a converter provided with a resonant circuit (), which converter comprises a device () for measuring the derivative (dI/dt) of the current through the current valves) and a detection device () co-operating with said measuring device () for detecting a short-circuit in the converter, the detection device () being adapted to detect a short-circuit current when the current derivative (dI/dt) measured by the measuring device () is equal to or exceeds a stipulated current derivative limit value (dI/dt) during a length of time exceeding a stipulated time limit value (t). The invention also relates to a method for controlling such a converter.

Converter and a method for controlling a converter

The invention relates to a VSC-converter for converting direct voltage into auxiliary voltage and vice versa, which comprises a series connection of at least two current valves () arranged between two poles (), a positive and a negative, of a direct voltage side of the converter, each current valve comprising several series connected circuits (), each of which circuits comprising a semiconductor component () of turn-off type and a rectifying component () connected in anti-parallel therewith, an alternating voltage phase line () being connected to a midpoint (), denominated phase output, of the series connection of current valves () between two of said current valves while dividing the series connection into two equal parts. Each of the series connected circuits () of the respective current valve comprises, in order to make possible a good voltage distribution between the semiconductor components () of turn-off type included in the respective current valve, a snubber capacitor () connected in parallel with the semiconductor component () of turn-off type included in the circuit. The converter () further comprises a resonance circuit () for recharging the snubber capacitors () of the current valves.

Bidirectional VSC converter with a resonant circuit

An electric circuit comprises a plurality of high power switching services connected in series and adapted to be controlled to be all conducting or blocking substantially simultaneously act together as a single switch and each holding a part of a high voltage to be held by the switch in the blocking state of the switching devices. Each switching device has an avalanche diode of SiC connected in anti-parallel therewith and adapted to start to conduct current when reverse biased as of a predetermined voltage limit for preventing that the voltage across the respective switching device exceeds such limit.

Electric circuit

A method and a device for controlling a switching operation consisting of a turn on or a turn off operation in a voltage controlled power transistor is provided. At least one current source is arranged at the control electrode of the power transistor. The at least one current source controls the recharging of at least one of the capacitances which occurs between the control electrode of the power transistor and the main electrode of the power transistor to determine the time rate of change of at least one of the voltage and current.

Method and device in power transistor

In a method and apparatus used for detecting and handling a short circuit in a circuit having a plurality of power semiconductors connected in series the voltage is divided across the electrodes and each power semiconductor and the magnitude of a small proportion of the voltage is measured. The magnitude of the voltage is compared to a reference voltage at least from when the power semiconductor is turned on. The reference voltage is higher than the maximum voltage across the power semiconductor during normal operation. A short circuit is detected when the magnitude of the measured voltage exceeds the reference voltage.
