The present invention relates to a method of producing metal cutting tools with outstanding performance in terms of toughness, wear resistance and resistance to coating delamination. According to the method the inserts are subjected to a stream of water mixed with blasting media under method conditions that result in an Alm&#xe9;n value between 0.5 and 1.

Method of producing metal cutting tools

The present invention relates to a CVD-coated cutting tool insert with a TiCN-layer with a low tensile stress level of from about 50 to about 390 MPa and an &#x3b1;-AlO-layer with a high surface smoothness with a mean Ra&#x3c;0.12 &#x3bc;m as measured by AFM-technique. This is obtained by subjecting the coating to an intensive wet blasting operation.

Coated cutting tool insert

A CVD-coated cutting tool insert with improved toughness properties having the ability to withstand high temperatures without sacrificing edge line security is disclosed. The insert coating comprises a TiCN-layer with a low tensile stress level of 50-500 MPa and an &#x3b1;-AlO-layer with a high surface smoothness with a mean Ra&#x3c;0.12 &#x3bc;m as measured by AFM-technique, obtained by subjecting the coating to an intensive wet blasting operation.

The present invention relates to a cutting tool insert for metal machining comprising tungsten carbide in a binder phase of tungsten or a tungsten alloy. The insert contains, in addition, WC in an amount such that in the x-ray diffraction pattern the peak ratio WC(101)/W(110) is &#x3c;0.3. This particular microstructure is obtained by an additional heat treatment at about 1200&#xb0; C. after the sintering.

Cutting tool

The present invention relates to a cutting tool with increased tool life when machining grey cast iron. The tool comprises a solid CBN-containing body containing more than 60 vol % CBN and a coating. The coating consists of at least one layer of metal nitride, carbonitride or carbide with the metal elements selected from at least one of Ti, Nb, Hf, V, Ta, Mo, Zr, Cr, W and Al, with a total thickness of 2-7 &mgr;m and 2-8 &mgr;m of &agr;- and/or &kgr;-Al O . The coating is a CVD coating deposited at 900&deg; C. or higher.

Inserts for metal cutting purposes

The present invention describes a coated CBN cutting tool for metal machining. The tool is composed of one or more CBN bodies with or without a cemented carbide backing. The coating comprises one or more layers of refractory compounds of which at least one layer consists of fine-grained, crystalline &ggr;-phase alumina, Al O , with a grain give less than 0.1 &mgr;m. The &ggr;-phase alumina is deposited with a Plasma Activated Chemical Vapor Deposition (PACVD) process in which the plasma is produced by applying a bipolar pulsed DC voltage across two electrodes to which the tool substrates to be coated are fixtured and electrically connected.

Al2O3 coated cutting tool

The present invention describes a coated CBN cutting tool for metal machining. The tool consists of one or more CBN substrate bodies with or without carbide backing. The coating is composed of one or more layers of refractory compounds of at least one layer of fine-grained, crystalline &ggr;-phase alumina (Al O ) with a grainsize less than 0.1 &mgr;m. The Al O -layer is deposited with a bipolar pulsed DMS technique (Dual Magnetron Sputtering) at substrate temperatures in the range 450&deg; C. to 700&deg; C.

A method wherein a superhard abrasive material is sintered and simultaneously bonded to a sintered cemented carbide body inside a container under elevated pressure and temperature conditions (HP/HT-treatment), whereby said cemented carbide body is in contact with at least one other cemented carbide body which after the sintering is removed, is disclosed. At least the cemented carbide surfaces in contact with each other during the HP/HT-treatment is at least one coated with a 1-10 &mgr;m thick layer of a refractory oxide. The method is particularly applicable for making cemented carbide cutting inserts provided a superabrasive material and with a hole for clamping to a tool holder whereby said hole is filled with a cemented carbide plug during the HP/HT-treatment and removed thereafter. Preferably, both the plug and the insert blank are coated.

The present invention discloses an HSS tool with a PVD coating and with at least one cutting edge. The cutting edge has a radius of 15-25 &mgr;m and the carbides in the HSS are in contact with the coating. The present invention also relates to a method of making an HSS tool provided with a PVD coating with improved wear resistance. The improvement is obtained by subjecting the tool prior to the deposition of the coating to an electropolishing treatment such that a cutting edge radius of 15-25 &mgr;m is obtained and that the carbides in the HSS are revealed.

A method of removing the binder phase from the surface of a hard material body consisting of hard constituents in a binder phase based on cobalt and/or nickel and with a binder phase enriched surface zone is disclosed. By carrying out a blasting process using particles with a size of 400-1500 mesh, a favorable combination of even removal of the cobalt layer, essentially no damage to the carbide grains and reasonable blasting time is obtained.

According to the present invention there is provided a method of making a cutting insert with a hole for clamping to a tool holder wherein a super-hard abrasive material is sintered and simultaneously bonded to a sintered cemented carbide body with a hole inside a container under elevated pressure and temperature conditions. A metal cutting insert comprises a carbide substrate, and at least one body of superhard abrasive material, such as PCD or PCBN, bonded to an edge surface of the substrate and extending from one side surface to the other side surface of the substrate. There can be a plurality of superhard bodies disposed at respective corners of the substrate. The abrasive material is applied to the substrate in a container and then sintered and simultaneously bonded to the substrate by an elevated pressure/temperature step. Inserts can be made in rod form (i.e., in one piece) and then the rod can be transversely sliced into thin inserts; or the inserts can be made in separate pieces, with or without separators within the container.
