A single controller interface (Smart-Stat) integrates the control of heating or cooling in buildings by simultaneously controlling Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems in concert with separate fresh air ventilation (FAV) systems. The Smart-Stat reduces costs and the carbon footprint of typical HVAC systems by optimizing the use of FAV. User-programmable set-points are incorporated with time-of-day and day-of-week as well as data from multiple sensors, thermostats and weather information. Mathematical algorithms are used to determine control signals to the HVAC or FAV systems. The Smart-Stat integrates the two separate systems into a single system that is able to direct the call for cooling or heating to the HVAC or FAV systems, depending on appropriate outside weather conditions. Any building can replace its existing HVAC system controller with the Smart-Stat controller and incorporate a FAV system to create a single integrated HVAC and FAV system.

Heating and cooling control methods and systems

The invention provides transgenic corn seed, which expresses a gene encoding a double mutant of theglgC gene in endosperm plastids, wherein the mutant protein has a proline to aspartic acid substitution at amino acid 295 and a glutamic acid to lysine substitution at amino acid 296. The transgenic corn seed of the invention is characterized by enhanced levels of a number of amino acids and oil, when compared to isogenic corn seed, which does not express the transgene in an endosperm plastid. However, the amount of starch in the transgenic corn seed of the invention is decreased or unchanged when compared to the amount of starch in the isogenic control corn seed.

The present invention provides grain, seed, feed made from the grain or seed, pet food made from the grain, and food products made from the grain. The grain may be maize grain with the following characteristics: oil burdened, elevated protein content, and low phytate levels. The combination of oil burdened, protein laden, and decreased phytate characteristics in grain makes a grain that provides more calories, protein and phosphorus and other nutrients to the feeding animal. Pet foods, and animal feeds and corn food products made of the present invention will provide increased nutrition because of the increased bioavailability of the components of the grain.

The invention relates to hosts containing constructs with genes from the starch pathway. More typically the present invention relates to bacterial hosts that form plant like starches. Additionally the present invention relates to plant hosts that have genes from the starch pathway. The invention further relates to the starches produced by said hosts.

Plant like starches and the method of making them in hosts

This invention relates to a method of producing a starch with unique functionality in plants through mutableness, and/or using biotechnology, and/or breeding practices. Further the invention relates to the starch from maize plants and/or other plants which produce starch storing organs which contain low amylose starch which has an amylose content between 1.5% and 15% and preferably between 1.5% and 10% and most preferably 1.5 and 8%. The invention includes starch extracted from such grain due to at least one mutation induced by ethyl methanesulfonate. Additionally, the invention uses a biotechnology approach involving controlling the activity of the granule bound starch synthase enzyme in starch storing organ. The invention includes the use of the starch for its cooking, paste, and gel properties.

Starch

The present invention relates to a recombinant nucleic acid encoding a hybrid polypeptide which comprises a transit peptide for the translocation of the polypeptide into an appropriate organelles such as plastids, a starch-encapsulating region from maize starch synthase and a payload polypeptide, wherein said payload polypeptide can be either N- or C-terminal to the starch encapsulating region. The invention also relates to the expression vectors comprising said nucleic acid, and hosts comprising the said vector. Also, the invention encompasses methods of producing the hybrid polypeptide thereof from starch and particularly from starch granules, and industrial uses of the payload polypeptide recombinantly produced in said hybrid polypeptide wherein said payload polypeptide is a biologically active molecule.

Broadly, the present invention relates to mutating starch genes in polyploid cereal grains. Specifically, this invention concerns mutant wheat plants, mutant wheat grain and the starch therefrom.

The invention relates to a transgenic or mutated plant having genomic material which alters the normal starch synthesis pathway within the plant. More specifically, the present invention relates to a plant having a genotype which creates new forms of starch in significant quantity. Particularly, the invention relates to grain having an embryo with a genotype heterozygous for two or more wild type genes (for example, Aa/Bb) and an endosperm having a genotype heterozygous for such genes (for example, AAa/BBb or AAa/bbB or aaA/BBb or aaA/bbB) and the starch produced therefrom.

Hybrid polypeptides are provided formed with encapsulating regions from genes that encode for anabolic proteins. More particularly, the present invention relates to recombinant nucleic acid molecules that code for genes which encapsulate an attached protein within a matrix; preferably, these genes encapsulate a desired ('payload') polypeptide within starch, and more specifically within the starch granule matrix. Expression vectors comprising these recombinant nucleic acid molecules, and hosts therefor, and more specifically the starch-bearing portions of such hosts, transformed with such vectors, are also provided. Preferably, grain containing a foreign protein encapsulated within the starch is provided, useful to produce mammalian, fish and avian food. The invention also encompasses methods of producing purified protein from starch and particularly from starch granules, and industrial uses of such protein.

Plants, particularly cereal plants, which have improved ability to synthesise starch at elevated or lowered temperatures and/or to synthesise starch with an altered fine structure are produced by inserting into the genome of the plant (i) a gene(s) encoding a form of an enzyme of the starch or glycogen biosynthetic pathway, particularly soluble starch synthase and/or branching enzyme and/or glycogen synthase, which display an activity which continues to increase over a temperature range over which the activity would normally be expected to decrease, and/or (ii) a gene(s) encoding sense and anti-sense constructs of enzymes of the starch biosynthetic pathway, particularly soluble starch synthase and/or branching enzyme and/or glycogen synthase, which alters the natural ratios of expression of the said enzymes or inserts enzymes with special structural characteristics which alter the natural branching pattern in starch.
