A cutting tool for metal material processing has a hard metal body and a multi-layer coating applied to the hard metal body in at least one surface area. The multi-layer coating includes the following, sequentially in direction from the hard metal body to the surface of the cutting tool: at least one layer TiCN, where x+y=1, x&#x2267;0, y&#x3e;0; at least one layer TiCNO, where x+y+z=1, 0&#x2266;z&#x2266;0.03 and 0.5&#x2266;x&#x2266;0.85; at least one layer TiN, or TiCN, where 0.2&#x2266;x&#x2266;0.8 and x+y=1, or TiNB, where 0.0001&#x2266;v&#x2266;0.05 and y+v=1; at least one layer: TiNBO, where y+v+z=1 and 0.0001&#x2266;v&#x2266;0.05 and 0.01&#x2266;z&#x2266;0.6, or TiCNO, where x+y+z=1 and 0&#x2266;y&#x2266;0.5 and 0.01&#x2266;z&#x2266;0.6; and at least one outer layer &#x3ba;-AlO. The at least one layer TiCNOhas a texture in the direction having a texture coefficient TC=1.3.
