A network device for interconnecting computer networks, the device including a bridge having a plurality of ports through which network communications pass to and from the bridge, the bridge also including a first interface enabling a user to partition the plurality of bridge ports into a plurality of groups, wherein each group represents a different virtual network, wherein the bridge treats all ports within a given group as part of the virtual network corresponding to that group and the bridge isolates the virtual networks from each other, whereby any communications received at a first port of the bridge are directly sent by the bridge to another bridge port only if the other bridge port and the first bridge port are part of the same group.

Virtual LANs

A packet is originated in a unit as a data field DATA plus a CRC (cyclic redundancy check) check field CRC by a CRC circuit This packet has a header HDR (with a routing information field RIF) added to it in a unit converting it into a message for transmission through a message network. A check correction field CCF is computed by unit in unit by looking up precomputed check subfields stored with the routing subfields (the routing information field being constructed by selecting from the stored subfields), such that the CRC field is a valid CRC check field for the complete message. At the destination, unit 30 can be the final user unit, checking the entire message and extracting the data field DATA therefrom; the DATA field does not need to be checked, as the CRC field acts as a check both for the data field DATA alone and the entire message. (Alternatively, the message can be checked by a final switching unit using a standard CRC check circuit (and similarly at intermediate units &Prime;) and the original packet can be checked by another standard CRC check circuit in the final user unit ).

A packet is originated in a unit 10 as a data field DATA 11 plus a CRC (cyclic redundancy check) check field CRC 12 by a CRC circuit 13. (Alternatively, the message can be checked by a final switching unit 30 using a standard CRC check circuit 32 (and similarly at intermediate units 30', 30') and the original packet can be checked by another standard CRC check circuit 42 in the final user unit 40.)

Check sequence preservation

A device 11 includes a sync unit 20 to identify and achieve synchronization with the cell boundaries of a 53-byte ATM cell stream. Each cell starts with a 5-byte header in which the 5th byte is a CRC byte. Instead of testing all possible bytes to see whether they are cell boundaries, a CRC circuit 21 computes CRCs for successive 5-byte blocks, under the control of a 5-state header counter 22. If such a block is a header, its CRC is a predetermined value, and a match signal is sent to a logic circuit 23, which starts a 53-state cell counter 24 and stops the header counter 22. A 4-state repeat counter 25 checks that the next 5 blocks checked by the CRC circuit 21 are also headers, as confirmation. Synchronization is achieved within at most 5 cells, because the test period of the testing circuitry (which could be longer than the header length) is coprime with the cell length.
