The invention involves a system and method for increasing positional accuracy of surgical systems that utilize magnetic or electromagnetic sensors to provide positional awareness to a surgeon or robot performing the surgery. The system takes advantage of electromagnetic tracking through sensors. These sensors are very accurate and repeatable, while being compact enough to not inhibit surgical procedures. The accuracy and repeatability of the sensors is <1 mm within a predetermined 6 inch×6 inch performance motion box. The system is constructed and arranged to map the distortion patterns of the sensor and, in real time, correct the distortion pattern to provide accurate location of anatomical structures for performance of a surgery.

System and method for reducing interference in positional sensors for robotic surgery

The present invention provides an apparatus, system and method for providing robotically assisted surgery that involves the removal of bone or non-fibrous type tissues during a surgical procedure, in particular with assistance from real-time ultrasound images from an ultrasound probe. The system utilizes a multi-axis robot having a reciprocating tool that is constructed and arranged to remove hard or non-fibrous tissues while leaving soft tissues unharmed. The multi-axis robot may be controlled via computer or telemanipulator, which allows the surgeon to complete a surgery from an area adjacent to the patient to thousands of miles away.

A method of performing a robotically assisted surgical procedure, comprising using a surgical sensor anchor during a surgical procedure which utilizes a robot to track movement of at least one portion of a body structure undergoing a surgical procedure or to track movement of a body structure near a surgical site.

Embodiments of a lever reducer and methods of using a lever reducer are provided. In some embodiments, the lever reducer system includes a first tower, a second tower, and a lever reducer configured to couple to the first tower and the second tower. The lever reducer can include a fulcrum configured to be coupled to the first tower and a swivel configured to be coupled to the second tower. The lever reducer is configured to vertically lift the second tower. The method can include coupling a first tower to a first vertebra, as well as coupling a second tower to a second vertebra. The method can include coupling a lever reducer to the first tower and the second tower by coupling a fulcrum to the first tower and a swivel to the second tower. The method can include applying a force to the lever reducer to vertically lift the second tower.

Lever reducer

A surgical tool that has a pair of transmissions coupled to one another to effect driving of a cutting tool in both bidirectional intermittent rotational manners and in opposite directions of continuous rotation. The transmissions are driven by a motor coupled to one of the transmissions which is coupled to the second transmission.

An oscillating drive mechanism for a surgical tool includes a motor having a rotor, a crank assembly hub, a link secured to the crank assembly hub, a pivot shaft, a shuttle including an arcuate rack gear secured to the link so that rotation of the crank assembly hub provides reciprocating rotary motion to the arcuate rack gear about the pivot shaft. A gear is meshed with the arcuate rack gear and is secured to an output shaft, whereby rotational motion of the motor induces rotary oscillating motion to the output shaft.

Powered surgical tool with transmission

The present invention provides a method of forming pilot apertures for surgical screws. The method provides at least three points of contact to the screw shank to provide reliable positioning and retention of the bone screw. The method also provides slots or areas for insertion and retention of bone growth promoting materials which further secure the bone screw over time. The method is useful for patients of all ages, and may be particularly useful for patients that have osteoporosis or patients that are very active by providing additional securement of the bone screw to the underlying bone.

A rod reducer assembly is provided and is selectively mountable to a pedicle screw assembly. The pedicle screw assembly includes a pedicle screw housing that defines a rod-receiving recess. The pedicle screw assembly includes an extension assembly that is coupled to the pedicle screw housing by a frangible member. The rod reducer is configured to reduce a spinal rod into the rod-receiving recess of the pedicle screw assembly. The rod reducer assembly may include a derotation sleeve configured to inhibit the frangible member from breaking while manipulating a spinal bone.

A bone, cartilage, and disk removal tool assembly is provided with a motor mounted in a housing. A spindle is mounted for rotation to the housing. A rack-and-pinion mechanism is operably driven by the motor and connected to the spindle to oscillate the spindle for providing a rotary oscillating cutting operation. According to at least another embodiment, a plurality of cams is supported in the housing and driven for rotation by the motor. A plurality of followers is mounted for rotation to the housing, in engagement with the plurality of cams so that one rotation of the plurality of cams oscillates the plurality of followers more than once while preventing over-rotation of the plurality of followers. A peak angular acceleration of the spindle is less than nine million radians per second squared.

Rotary oscillating bone, cartilage, and disk removal tool assembly

The invention involves a system and method for quickly retracting a tool from a surgical site. The system is generally constructed and arranged for attachment to a robotic arm for manipulation of the tool to perform an in-vivo surgery. The tool is constructed to retract from the surgical site upon a predetermined condition. The system and the robot can be reset when the condition has cleared so that the surgery can continue.
