A bipolar electrode-electrolyte unit for an electrochemical cell includes a barrier layer, at least two carrier layers and at least two active layers, and an electrolyte. The active layers comprise an electroactive material with low resistance and high capacitance. The barrier layer is electrically conducting, is impermeable to matter, and is made of compressed carbon, impregnated carbon, compressed and impregnated carbon, plastic-bonded carbon or carbon-coated sheet metal. The carrier layers, each located between a barrier layer and an active layer, form an electrically conducting porous three-dimensional structure with a large specific surface that contains a material selected from the group consenting of carbon fiber papers, carbon fiber films, carbon fiber mats, carbon fiber fabrics, compressed graphite flakes and carbon fibers, conducting plastic, and carbon produced by pyrolysis or dehydration of organic materials.

Bipolar electrode-electrolyte unit

A double-layer capacitor is composed of at least two individual double-layer capacitor cells connected in series, with bipolar electrodes and electrolyte layers being provided alternately. Each a bipolar electrode includes an electrically conducting carrier with an active layer applied on both sides, the active layer having a low resistance and large active surface. The carrier provides an electrically conducting barrier between the adjoining ion-conducting electrolyte layers, and the electrodes and electrolyte layers are permanently connected. An electrically conducting binder is integrated into the active layer, or a separate connecting layer is provided to promote adhesion between the active and electrolyte layers.

A method and apparatus for carrying out an electrolytic process produces clean gases, such as oxygen and hydrogen. For this purpose, a porous diaphragm is arranged between the cathode and the anode of an electrolyzer, and a liquid electrolyte is fixed in the pores of the cathode and anode. A first gas chamber adjoins the cathode, while a second gas chamber adjoins the anode, and an educt chamber is separated from the first gas chamber by a membrane. An aqueous, non-corrosive solution of salts of inorganic and organic acids or mixtures of water with organic additives is used as an educt, which, compared with the electrolyte, has a higher partial water vapor pressure.

Electrolysis process and apparatus

A double-layer capacitor unit includes two electrodes as well as one electrolyte arranged between the electrodes. The electrodes each comprise an active layer made of metal oxide powder on a chemically stable metal carrier. The electrolyte is a diluted aqueous mineral acid or alkaline lye.
