Method for producing oxide layers which protect against wear and/or corrosion

The present disclosure describes a coated implant for bone repair that is biodegradable. The coated implant includes an implant body formed from a magnesium alloy, and a porous ceramic coating disposed on at least a portion of an outer surface of the implant body. The porous ceramic coating can include MgO, Mg(OH), Mg(PO), and oxides of alloying elements of magnesium.

A medical implant comprises a biodegradable magnesium-based alloy of which at least a part of its surface layer comprises a magnesium carbonate. A method for the manufacture of a biocompatible, corrosion-inhibiting protective surface layer on a medical implant comprising a magnesium-based alloy, comprises: providing an implant comprising a magnesium-based alloy to be coated; placing the implant into a reactor chamber; exposing at least part of the surface of said implant to an atmosphere comprising humid carbon dioxide to produce a coating on the surface of the implant comprising a magnesium carbonate of the formula x MgCO.y Mg(OH), whereby x+y=1; removing the implant from the reactor chamber; and drying the surface of the implant.

Medical implant comprising a biodegradable magnesium-based alloy and method for its manufacture

The present disclosure is directed, at least in part, to a method of producing ceramic layers on magnesium and its alloys, a magnesium implant with a ceramic layer made by the method, and a magnesium implant having a biocompatible ceramic layer substantially free of material which impairs the biocompatibility of said biocompatible ceramic layer. In an exemplary embodiment, the method of producing ceramic layers on magnesium and its alloys, includes (a) immersing an implant and a metal sheet into the aqueous electrolyte bath, said aqueous electrolyte bath including: ammoniac, diammonium hydrogen phosphate and urea, and wherein the implant is made of magnesium or its alloy; (b) performing a anodic oxidation by passing a current between the implant, the metal sheet and through the aqueous electrolyte bath, wherein the implant is connected to a positive pole of a current source and the metal sheet is connected to a negative pole of the current source; (c) applying a current density selected to form sparks on said implant, to thereby form a ceramic layer on said implant.

Disclosed is a method for producing wear-resistant layers on materials of barrier-layer-forming metals, such as aluminum, magnesium and titanium and their alloys and mixtures, preferably aluminum or its alloys, by means of laser treatment, the material surface being exposed to a laser irradiation in the presence of an atmosphere containing oxygen in such a way that the upper or outer layer of the material surface reacts with the oxygen to form an oxide of the metal constituting the material, preferably aluminum oxide, and the layer of the material lying under that is remelted without reacting with the atmosphere containing oxygen. This results in a multilayer structure with excellent wear-resistant properties, including excellent corrosion resistance, excellent abrasion resistance and extreme hardness that does not exhibit any brittleness as a result of the hardness gradient within the layer structure.

Production of wear-resistant layers on barrier-layer-forming metals or their alloys by means of laser treatment

A method of producing oxide ceramic layers on Al, Mg, Ti, Ta, Zr, Nb, Hf, Sb, W, Mo, V, Bi or their alloys by a plasma-chemical anodical oxidation in a chloride-free electrolytic bath having a pH value of 2 to 8 and a constant bath temperature of -30.degree. to +15.degree. C. A current density of at least 1 A/dm.sup.2 is maintained constant in the electrolytic bath until the voltage reaches a predetermined end value.

Method of producing oxide ceramic layers on barrier layer-forming metals

A method of producing composite oxide ceramic fluorine polymer layers on articles of aluminum, magnesium, titanium or their alloys, particularly of light metal components, includes introducing particles of fluorine polymers into the capillary system of an oxide ceramic layer. The particles have a particle size which at least in one dimension is smaller than the diameter of the capillaries. The article is then subjected to alternating pressure conditions.
