A remote activity controller for people is in the form of a portable appliance, including a display apparatus, an internal clock, a user ID code and memory device, and possibly with geographic position recording and with movement and other activity sensors for mobile detection and storage of personal state data for the wearer. Further, a data interface is included via which, when required, a communication link can be set up with contract partners in order to transfer data from the appliance to them, at least at times. In addition, a label communicator is included for detection of information data of measurement or therapy appliances used, including the measurement data determined by these appliances; and also the information about products, such as foodstuffs, medicaments, and network addresses of contract partners or the like, on the basis of labels which are located on or in them or are stored in a label album. Further, a connection for a personal electronic health record is included in which the relevant health data is entered on the basis of a predetermined data scheme, and instantaneous measurement values, consumption values and behavior patterns are added continually to this data, such as weight, blood pressure, temperature, heart rate, test strips and in which other chemical diagnostic values are stored, medicaments consumed, foodstuffs eaten, movement patterns or the like, with timestamps, batch numbers, test equipment types, etc.

A phoneme dictionary for speech recognition has a continuously stored set of standard words and their phonemes. As documents are needed by an application using the phoneme dictionary, words in the documents are selected and dynamically and temporarily added to the phoneme dictionary. Phonemes corresponding to the added words are generated using a text-to-phoneme converter, and are then temporarily added to the dictionary. Temporarily added words and their phonemes are dropped from the phoneme dictionary when their document is no longer needed by the application.

A piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer for radiating ultrasonic energy in the medium of air has a number of piezoceramic ultrasonic radiators disposed in registry within a dimensionally stable carrier block which has an intrinsic acoustic impedance which is lower by a factor of at least eight than that of the piezoceramic material and which has a high mechanical attenuation 1/Q.sub.m greater than approximately 0.05. The carrier block is yieldable at at least one closed face thereof for emission and/or reception of ultrasonic energy. The piezoelectric transducer elements may be divided into a number of side-by-side elements which may be individually energized, or may have electrodes connected in series for energizing the individual transducer elements in common. The combined operation of the ultrasonic transducer elements within the carrier block results in an ultrasonic transducer having broadband characteristics matched for ultrasonic transmission in the medium of air of short ultrasonic waveforms and for receiving ultrasonic energy for near-distance detection.

Broadband piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer for radiating in air

A piezo-electric control element with a monitoring system is formed of lamellae of piezo-electric material whose longitudinal direction extends in an actuation direction of the control element. The lamellae are interconnected to form at least one lamella packet and electrodes are provided for applying electric actuation voltage at opposite principal faces of the lamella. At lest one lamella of the packet has on one principal face a measuring electrode which extends over a portion of the lamella and which is opposite a cooperating electrode on an opposite principal face of the lamella. The measuring electrode has an electric terminal separately provided for measurement of displacement and/or speed, or actuating force.

Monitoring system for electrically actuated control element

An electrically actuated control and positioning element formed of a lamella packet as a piezoelectric transducer whose ends are designed to form a power transmission element, and which is capable of transmitting tensile forces. Lamellae spaced from one another engage with parts of the power transmission element, preferably in a dovetailing or interlocking manner. Further active lamellae may be situated in the spaces between the spaced lamellae.

Electrically actuated piezoelectric control element

An electrically actuated positioning element system utilizes a positioning element formed of piezo-electrical bodies each formed of a plurality of lamellae having electrodes. The lamellae have a length substantially greater than their thickness and upon application of an electrical voltage with a field direction which promotes a polarization of the material of the lamellae, the body is shortened. The two bodies are connected to one another at one end by a cross arm and at the other end the one body end is active and free to move relative to the other body end such that a resultant relative motion occurring between the two body ends may be utilized. Preferably a connection is provided for absorbing a lateral thrust of the bodies. The two piezo-electrical bodies are each electrically connected to one another for reverse-phase operation such that one contracts while the other is in a lengthened condition and vice versa.

Positioning element with a piezo-ceramic body

A circuit arrangement for a piezoelectric positioning element is formed of a series connection of a capacitive element, an inductance, and first switch to be controlled, said series circuit being connected across at least one piezoelectric body of the positioning element. The capacitive element, which may be another piezoelectric body of the same positioning element but which is operated in reverse phase, has at least approximately the same capacitance value as a capacitance of the first piezo-electrical body. The inductance is dimensioned sufficiently large in order to magnetically intermediately store substantially an entire energy increment to be transferred between the positioning element and the capacitive element. The first switch is connected to permit termination of a charge transfer. A series circuit is formed of an electrical energy source for charging and recharging and a second switch, said series circuit being connected parallel to the positioning element or the capacitive element. A controllable short-circuit switch is connected parallel to the capacitive element or parallel to the positioning element. In this way, the activation energy of the piezoelectric body is recovered on de-activation, for re-use on the next cycle.

Energy saving circuit arrangement for a piezoelectric positioning element

A pyrodetector is disclosed which has a sharply limited directional range of detection sensitivity for the detection of a body entering into its directional range at a distance from the detector, the body having a temperature which is different from that of its environment. A concave mirror for focusing thermal radiation emanating from the body is provided and a pyroelectric sensor positioned at a focus of the mirror is also provided and formed as a flat body consisting of an electrically non-conductive material and with a pair of electrodes. A cover transmissive to the incident thermal radiation is provided for protecting the sensor element against damage and air drafts. At least one further sensor element similar to the first sensor element and with essentially the same heating time constant is also provided and arranged adjacent to the first sensor element but beyond the mirror focus. The electrode pairs of all the sensor elements are connected to an electrical evaluation circuit which forms a difference between an output signal of the first and further sensor elements. The pairs of electrodes are each terminated with an impedance such that a time constant K of a decay time of the sensor element R.sub.x .multidot.C.sub.x =K is valid for all pairs of electrodes where C.sub.x is a capacitance of the capacitor formed from a respective pair of electrodes, R.sub.x is the respective terminating impedance, and K&lt;10 seconds. In a preferred embodiment of the invention a honeycomb grating is provided directly adjacent the transmissive cover which protects the sensor elements.

Pyrodetector

A trigger device for electronic switches operating according to piezo-electric principles and having galvanic decoupling between the input control electronics and the controlled electronics switch has a piezo-ignition coupler which is a lamina of piezo-ceramic material having at least two spaced electrodes on one surface thereof and at least two counter electrodes in registry therewith on an opposite side thereof. The respective electrodes in registry form electrode pairs and one pair of electrodes is connected to the control electronics and another pair of electrodes is connected to the trigger electrode of the electronic switch. The lamina has a shape displaying an axis with more than two-fold rotational symmetry and the dimensions of the lamina are selected such that the frequency of an alternating signal supplied to the lamina is matched to the resonant frequency of the lamina at a value between 20 kHz and 500 kHz for inducing a mode of vibration according to the principle of radial oscillation.
