Packets are received at a first boundary node of a long haul optical communication network which may either interconnect originating and destination communication networks or form an integral part of a single end-to-end network. Packets are reclassified to reflect a higher priority of transmission than non-long haul bound packets, as by marking them with an indication of a modified priority level of transmission. Reclassified packets are transmitted over a long-haul optical link to a second boundary node. So that the modified priority level employed in the long-haul network may be understood by a destination network, packets arriving at the second boundary node may be re-mapped or reclassified to a value recognized as being of at least equal and, preferably, higher priority than that originally established by the originating network and/or first bounary node. Using a substantially equal priority value in the reclassification establishes at least a consistent, end-to-end quality of service for each packet that has traversed the long haul portion of a communications network. More efficient use of transmission resources is realized by associating a higher priority with packets that have traversed the long haul portion of the network, each packet increasing in value as it nears the ultimate destination. Essentially, the reclassification decreases the likelihood that a packet, having made such substantial progress as to have traversed the length of the long haul portion of the network, will be dropped prior to reaching its destination and require re-transmission.

System and method for transmitting packets over a long-haul optical network

In a disconnectable low-loss optical connection for optical fibers, each fiber in a pair of optical fibers is surrounded by a connector body to the conical frustum mating end of which is applied a tiny, transparent, flexible index matching dome of silicone rubber or equivalent material. The connector bodies are held together by mating to each other or to a common alignment receptacle having conically hollow receiving surfaces, so that the fiber ends are aligned and the domes touch and flex completing the optical connection.

The invention relates to apparatus for precisely aligning an optical device, i.e., a light source or receptor, to an optical fiber. In one embodiment, the apparatus comprises a header (10) having a plateau (11) for mounting the device (15) and a trough (12) for positioning of the optical fiber (19). The depth (D) of the trough is precisely configured so that the alignment process is limited to adjustment in only one direction (L-L'). A second embodiment (30) allows for the hermetic enclosure of the optical device and adjacent section of optical fiber while providing the same alignment advantage.

A method of fabricating an optical fiber connector is disclosed using a transfer molding process employing a precision die whose interior surface defines a frustum for forming the mating surface of the connector. The fiber is inserted through the mold cavity and extends through an aperture in the end surface of the frustum and through an annulus disposed outside of the mold cavity immediately adjacent to the aperture. At the transfer molding temperature, the annulus expands inward radially, simultaneously sealing the aperture and centering the fiber. After curing, the excess fiber is removed, and a flexible, dome-shaped contacting member is formed over the fiber end.

Method of fabricating optical fiber connectors

One or more glass or other brittle fiber ends are prepared by first embedding the fiber in epoxy or other plastic and then slicing the plastic and the fiber a first time to produce an oblique end face and a second time to produce an end face exhibiting intersecting planes. The slicing is continued with successive advancements of the slicing of approximately one thousandth of an inch to produce a squared end. The technique is applicable to fiber end preparation of single fibers and plural fibers as in optical fiber tapes and cables.

An optical ternary pulse transmission system is disclosed in which a light emitting diode is caused to generate either one of two light intensity outputs in response to the voltage pulses presented at either one of two input terminals. The voltage pulse at each input terminal is coupled to the light emitting diode through a gain control network. Most of the light from the light emitting diode is coupled to an optical fiber, and a first photodetector is positioned close to the light emitting diode in order to capture stray light not coupled into the optical fiber. A second photodetector with an opaque coating is positioned such that its position and the position of the first photodetector are electrically symmetrical with respect to the light emitting diode. The electrical signal from the second photodetector representing parasitic coupling is subtracted from the signal developed by the first photodetector in order to develop a signal dependent only on light intensity variations. First and second comparator circuits are selectively gated by the input voltage pulses to utilize selected pulses of the light dependent signal in developing feedback voltages for the gain control networks.
