A power supply system for an electric arc furnace includes an AC input connectable to an electrical grid and an AC output for supplying at least one power electrode of the arc furnace. The power supply system further includes a converter circuit interconnected between the AC input and the AC output. The converter circuit includes at least one converter cell with a capacitor and semiconductor switches for series connecting the capacitor between a circuit input and a circuit output of the converter circuit.

Systems, methods, techniques and apparatuses of fault protection. One exemplary embodiment is a protection system including a solid-state switching device, a galvanic isolation switching device, and a controller. The solid-state switching device is coupled between a switch arrangement of a power converter and a direct current (DC) link capacitor of the power converter. The galvanic isolation switching device is coupled between the DC link capacitor and a DC network. The controller is structured to determine a fault is occurring within the DC network, open the solid-state switching device in response to determining the fault is occurring, receive a measurement corresponding to an electrical characteristic of a fault current flowing through the galvanic isolation switching device while the solid-state switching device is open, and determine a location of the fault based on the received measurement.

A power semiconductor device includes a Si chip providing a Si switch and a wide bandgap material chip providing a wide bandgap material switch, wherein the Si switch and the wide bandgap material switch are electrically connected in parallel. A method for controlling a power semiconductor device includes: during a normal operation mode, controlling at least the wide bandgap material switch for switching a current through the power semiconductor device by applying corresponding gate signals to at least the wide bandgap material switch; sensing a failure in the power semiconductor device; and, in the case of a sensed failure, controlling the Si switch by applying a gate signal, such that a current is generated in the Si chip heating the Si chip to a temperature forming a permanent conducting path through the Si chip.

One exemplary embodiment is an MVDC collection system coupled to a utility grid including a collection bus, a plurality of branches coupled to the collection bus, and a branch controller. Each of the plurality of branches include a semiconductor switch coupled to the collection bus, and a DC/DC converter coupled to the semiconductor switch and an LVDC power source. The branch controller configured to determine a fault condition is occurring within the MVDC collection system, determine the location of the fault condition, and isolate the fault condition using at least one of the semiconductor switches and the DC/DC converters.

The turbine is operable to extract energy from a fluid flow and convert the extracted energy into mechanical energy. The step-up transformer is operable to transfer the AC electrical energy at a lower voltage from the electric generator to a higher voltage. An energy system is specified, which comprises a wind power turbine or water power turbine, which is connected to a generator, with the generator having at least two stator windings. In order to achieve a simple and robust design without a transformer, each stator winding has an associated rectifier unit, and each stator winding is connected to the AC voltage side of the associated rectifier unit. Furthermore, each rectifier unit has a respective associated energy storage circuit, and each rectifier unit is connected in parallel on the DC voltage side to the associated energy storage circuit, with the energy storage circuits being connected to one another in series.
