A glass composition includes: from 55.0 mol % to 70.0 mol % SiO; from 12.0 mol % to 20.0 mol % AlO; from 5.0 mol % to 15.0 mol % LiO; and from 4.0 mol % to 15.0 mol % NaO. The glass composition has the following relationships −8.00 mol %≤RO+RO−AlO−BO−PO≤−1.75 mol %, 9.00≤(SiO+AlO+LiO)/NaO, and (LiO+AlO+PO)/(NaO+BO)≤3.50. The glass composition may be used in a glass article or a consumer electronic product.

Glasses with low excess modifier content

The disclosure relates to glass compositions with high coefficients of thermal expansion and low fracture toughness designed for thermal tempering. These glasses are ideally suited to produce a 'dicing' pattern when thermally tempered, even when thin (<3 mm). Disclosed glasses have high thermal expansions at low and high temperatures to produce increased temper stresses once quenched, coupled with low fracture toughness which promotes crack bifurcation and enhanced frangibility. Methods of making such glasses are also provided.

Non-iox glasses with high coefficient of thermal expansion and preferential fracture behavior for thermal tempering

A glass composition is provided that is capable of being ion exchanged to produce high central tension values. The glass composition includes SiO, LiO, and CaO. Glass-based articles formed by ion-exchanging glass-based substrates formed from the glass composition are also provided. The glass-based articles are characterized by a maximum central tension of greater than or equal to 150 MPa, and this maximum central tension value may be achieved by ion exchanging in a sodium containing molten salt bath. The glass-based articles may be utilized in consumer electronic devices.

Glass compositions with high central tension capability

Glass-based articles comprise stress profiles providing improved fracture resistance. The glass-based articles herein provide high fracture resistance after multiple drops.

Fracture resistant stress profiles in glasses

A strengthened cover glass or glass-ceramic sheet or article as well as processes and systems for making the strengthened glass or glass-ceramic sheet or article is provided for use in consumer electronic devices. The process comprises cooling the cover glass sheet by non-contact thermal conduction for sufficiently long to fix a surface compression and central tension of the sheet. The process results in thermally strengthened cover glass sheets for use in or on consumer electronic products.

Thermally strengthened consumer electronic glass and related systems and methods

A glass composition includes from 55.0 mol % to 75.0 mol % SiO; from 8.0 mol % to 20.0 mol % AlO; from 3.0 mol % to 15.0 mol % LiO; from 5.0 mol % to 15.0 mol % NaO; and less than or equal to 1.5 mol % KO. The glass composition has the following relationships: AlO+LiO is greater than 22.5 mol %, RO+RO is greater than or equal to 18.0 mol %, RO/AlOis greater than or equal to 1.06, SiO+AlO+BO+POis greater than or equal to 78.0 mol %, and (SiO+AlO+BO+PO)/LiO is greater than or equal to 8.0. The glass composition may be used in a glass article or a consumer electronic product.

Ion-exchangeable mixed alkali aluminosilicate glasses

Glass compositions including 50 mol % to 65 mol % SiO, 13 mol % to 20 mol % AlO, 6 mol % or more BO, 0 mol % to 5 mol % MgO, 0 mol % to 2 mol % CaO, 8 mol % to 14 mol % LiO, 0 mol % to 4 mol % NaO, and 0 mol % to 1 mol % KO, where AlOmol %>RO+R'O−3 mol %. The glass compositions may have a Kvalue of 0.75 MPa*mor more measured by a chevron short bar method. The glass compositions may be used in a glass article or consumer electronic product.

Boron-containing glass compositions having high fracture toughness

In embodiments, a glass includes from 45 mol % to 70 mol % SiO; from 11.5 mol % to 25 mol % AlO; from 2 mol % to 20 mol % LiO; from greater than 0 mol % to 10 mol % NaO; from 9 mol % to 19 mol % MgO; from 4 mol % ZrO; and from 0 mol % to 0.5 mol % TiO. In other embodiments, a glass includes from 45 mol % to 70 mol % SiO; from 4 mol % to 25 mol % AlO; from 5 mol % to 20 mol % LiO; from 0.1 mol % to 10 mol % NaO; from 6 mol % to 25 mol % MgO; from 0.1 mol % to 4 mol % ZrO; from 0.1 mol % to 5 mol % KO; and from 0.05 mol % to 0.5 mol % SnO.

Ion exchangeable glasses having high fracture toughness

Ion-exchanged alkali aluminosilicate glass articles with a ratio of peak compressive stress value to Young's modulus value of 14 or more. The glass articles may include AlOmol %+RO mol %≥18 mol %, where RO mol %=MgO mol %+CaO mol %, and be substantially free of ZnO, SrO, BaO, BO, PO, LiO, and KO. The glass articles may have a peak compressive stress value in a range of 850 MPa to 1400 MPa. The glass articles are suitable for various high-strength applications, including cover glass applications that experience significant bending stresses during use, for example, cover glasses for flexible displays.

Low-modulus ion-exchangeable glasses

Glass-based articles are provided that exhibit improved fracture resistance. The relationships between properties attributable to the glass composition and stress profile of the glass-based articles are provided that indicate improved fracture resistance.

Glass-based articles with improved fracture resistance

A laminated glass article comprises a core layer comprising a core glass composition having an average core coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and a clad layer directly adjacent to the core layer and comprising a clad glass composition having an average clad coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) that is less than the CTEsuch that the clad layer is in compression and the core layer is in tension. A compressive stress of the clad layer increases with increasing distance from the outer surface of the clad layer, transitions to a minimum tensile stress as a step-change at an interface region between the core layer and the clad layer, and a magnitude of the tensile stress increases continuously to a maximum tensile stress in the core layer. Other stress profiles, and methods of preparing laminated glass articles are also disclosed.

Glass laminates having determined stress profiles and methods of making the same

A laminated glass article comprises a core layer comprising a core glass composition, and a cladding layer directly adjacent to the core layer and comprising a clad glass composition. A stress of the cladding layer increases with increasing distance from an outer surface of the cladding layer from a compressive stress to a tensile stress, transitions to a compressive stress as a step-change at an interface region between the core layer and the cladding layer, and increases with increasing distance from the interface region to a center of the core layer from the compressive stress to a tensile stress.

Glass laminate with buried stress spikes to arrest cracks and methods of making the same

A glass composition includes: greater than or equal to 55 mol % and less than or equal to 70 mol % SiO; greater than or equal to 14 mol % and less than or equal to 25 mol % AlO; greater than or equal to 0 mol % BO; greater than or equal to 0 mol % PO; greater than or equal to 0 mol % and less than or equal to 10 mol % LiO; greater than or equal to 6.5 mol % and less than or equal to 20 mol % NaO; greater than or equal to 0 mol % KO; greater than or equal to 0.1 mol % and less than or equal to 4.5 mol % MgO; greater than or equal to 0 mol % CaO; and greater than or equal to 0 mol % SrO. The sum of LiO, NaO, and KO in the glass composition may be greater than or equal to 6.5 mol % and less than or equal to 22 mol %. The glass composition may satisfy the relationship AlO*(2.94)+BO*(−0.58)+PO*(−3.87)+LiO*(5.01)+NaO*(1.89)+KO*(−2.03) is greater than 100.

Glass compositions having improved mechanical durability and low characteristic temperatures

Glass compositions are provided with low Young's modulus and compatibility with slot drawing techniques, due at least in part to liquidus viscosity and liquidus temperature. When ion-exchanged the resulting glass articles are capable of exhibiting a ratio of a peak compressive stress value in MPa to a Young's modulus value in GPa of 13.0 or more. The glass articles may have a peak compressive stress value in a range of 850 MPa to 1400 MPa. The glass articles are suitable for various high-strength applications, including cover glass applications that experience significant bending stresses during use, for example, cover glasses for flexible displays.

Low-modulus ion-exchangeable glasses for enhanced manufacturability

A glass substrate comprises: a first position, wherein a tensile stress of the glass substrate is insufficient to cause fragmentation of the glass substrate into small pieces upon fracture of the glass substrate; and a second position, wherein the glass substrate is bent relative to the first position, and wherein the tensile stress of the glass substrate is sufficient to cause fragmentation of the glass substrate into small pieces upon fracture of the glass substrate. The glass substrate can include a first surface and a second surface. In the first position, the first surface and the second surface of the glass substrate can be planar. In the second position, the first surface and the second surface of the glass substrate can be planar. The small pieces can be generally cubic. In the second position, the glass substrate can be bent uniaxially along a bend axis of the glass substrate.
