An umbilical assembly for supplying power to subsea equipment includes an electrical conductor to convey an electrical current to the subsea equipment. An insulator surrounds the conductor. A support member is positioned between the insulator and the conductor. The support member has either non-magnetic properties or low-magnetic properties because of its material composition. The support member is adapted to connect to a structure at the surface of the sea. The support member supports the weight of the conductor. The supporting of the weight of the conductor by the support member can be to reduce creep typically associated with the conductor supporting its own weight. The support member can be used to hermetically seal the conductor and prevent hydrogen migration along the conductor.

Subsea power umbilical

An actuator for use in actuating a valve to control the flow of fluids through the valve, the valve having a valve member movable between positions opening and closing the valve. The actuator comprises one or more shape memory alloy elements each being transformable from a martensitic to an austenitic state by applying heat energy to achieve an austenitic transformation. The one or more shape memory alloy elements are connected to the valve member such that austenitic transformation of the one or more shape memory alloy elements induces movement of the valve member from its closing position to its opening position.

Shape memory alloy actuation

An underwater cable deployment system includes a series of cables, pre-wound on a set of reels, disposed upon a pallet and connected to a distribution hub on the pallet. The pallet is lowered to the ocean floor and a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) is also lowered to the ocean floor to deploy cables to form a predetermined array on the ocean floor. Preferably, the pallet is delivered to the ocean floor in advance by crane with the reel-mounted sensor array cables being deployed later by ROV. Optionally, the ROV may include a jetting package configured to bury the sensor cable as it is being deployed from the reel on the ROV.
