The disclosure provides an apparatus including a temperature sensor configured to monitor a temperature of a generator component of a power train assembly. The power train assembly includes a power train component in thermal communication with a cooling fluid and mounted on a same shaft as the generator component. A controller is coupled to the temperature sensor and a heat exchange circuit for adjusting a temperature of the cooling fluid. The controller calculates a target temperature for the generator component based on a target thrust bearing parameter or a target vibration parameter for the power train assembly and adjusts a delivery of the cooling fluid to the power train component based on a difference between the monitored temperature and the target temperature.

A method for controlling and enhancing a startup operation for a combined cycle power block (block) having at least one gas turbine and at least one steam turbine, wherein operating parameters define performance and operational characteristics for the startup operation, the method comprising: receiving measured operating parameters from a plurality of reference blocks and, for each of the plurality of reference blocks, a plurality of types of the startup operations; given the measured operating parameters, developing one or more reference transfer functions between two of the measured operating parameters; receiving measured operating parameters from the startup operation of a target block; given the measured operating parameters from the target block, developing one or more transfer functions for the target block between two of the operating parameters; selecting one of the reference transfer functions; and normalizing the transfer function of the target block per the selected reference transfer function.

A stator seal for a turbine assembly includes a seal base securable to a turbine stator and including an annular inner surface, and an abradable coating disposed on the annular inner surface. The abradable coating and the annular inner surface have a predefined cross-sectional profile including a transient operation section that facilitates axial expansion and a steady state operation section that facilitates a tighter clearance.

A device includes a stationary, rotary component, and a fiber optic sensing system. The fiber optic sensing system includes a cable having one or more fiber optic sensors disposed on the stationary component, the rotary component, or combinations thereof. The fiber optic sensing system is configured to detect one or more first parameters including temperature, strain, pressure, vibration, torque; or combinations thereof related to the stationary component, the rotary component, or combinations thereof. The one or more first parameters is used to determine one or more second parameters including thermal expansion, clearance, fluid flow rate variation, condensation, fluid leakage, thermal loss, life, thermal stress, or combinations thereof related to the stationary component, the rotary component, or combinations thereof.

Fiber optic sensing device and method

A fiberoptic system for clearance detection between rotating and stationary turbomachinery components is presented. The system comprises an optical fiber probe comprising a plurality of optical fibers, at least one of the optical fibers comprising a transmission fiber and at least one of the optical fibers comprising a signal fiber; a light source for providing light through the transmission fiber towards a target; filters for receiving light from the signal fibers, at least two of the filters for filtering different wavelengths; and at least one photodetector for receiving filtered light from the filters.

A method of facilitating a probabilistic lifting process is provided. The method includes obtaining operational data for at least one turbine engine, defining a plurality of cool-down curves for the at least one turbine engine, identifying a plurality of different start types of the at least one turbine engine, and developing a formula for the at least one turbine engine. The method also includes determining an operating strategy and establishing a design useful life for the at least one turbine engine, developing at least one histogram and a probabilistic model using the operational data, and determining a mission mix for the operating strategy by performing a simulation of the probabilistic model combined with cyclic life expenditure data of the at least one turbine engine.

A method for operating a rotary machine is provided. The rotary machine includes a stationary member and a rotatable member wherein the rotatable member is configured to rotate at least partially within the stationary member. The method includes determining an off-normal operating condition of the rotary machine facilitating undesirable contact between the rotatable member and the stationary member, monitoring a parameter associated with the off-normal operating condition, and preventing operation of the rotary machine while the monitored parameter is within a predetermined range.

A method is disclosed to monitor deflections in a turbine casing by: positioning gap sensors on a shell standard support surface and below an opposite surface of the shell arm support; each gap sensor monitoring a gap between the shell standard support surface and shell arm support; determining change in the planar slope of the shell arm support over the period of time based on the collected data, wherein changes in the slope indicate deflections in the casing.
