A system includes a housing and a first circuit board positioned inside the housing. The housing has a top panel, a bottom panel, a left side panel, a right side panel, a front panel, and a rear panel. The front panel is at an angle relative to the bottom panel in which the angle is in a range from 30 to 150°. The first circuit board has a length, a width, and a thickness, in which the length is at least twice the thickness, the width is at least twice the thickness, and the first circuit board has a first surface defined by the length and the width. The first surface of the first circuit board is at a first angle relative to the bottom panel in which the first angle is in a range from 30 to 150°. The first surface of the first circuit board is substantially parallel to the front panel or at a second angle relative to the front panel in which the second angle is less than 60°. The system includes a first data processing module and a first optical interconnect module both electrically coupled to the first circuit board. The optical interconnect module is configured to receive first optical signals from a first optical link, convert the first optical signals to first electrical signals, and transmit the first electrical signals to the first data processing module.

Data processing systems including optical communication modules

A system includes a substrate on which a data processor and a connector block are mounted. The connector block has a first array of electrical connectors on a first surface, and a second array of electrical conducts on a second surface that is oriented at an angle between 45° to 135° relative to a main surface of the substrate. At least a portion of the first array of electrical connectors are electrically coupled to the data processor, and the second array of electrical contacts are electrically connected to the electrical contacts of a pluggable module. The pluggable module includes an optical module, at least one first optical connector, a first fiber optic cable optically coupled between the optical module and the first optical connector, and a fiber guide positioned between the optical module and the first optical connector and provides mechanical support for the optical module and the first optical connector.

Communication systems having pluggable modules

A method of assembling an optical device including: providing a photonic integrated circuit including a plurality of vertical-coupling elements disposed along a main surface of the photonic integrated circuit; attaching an optical subassembly to the photonic integrated circuit; removably connecting a fiber connector to a ferrule frame, in which the fiber connector is attached to an array of optical fibers; aligning the ferrule frame to the optical subassembly using an active alignment process; and securely connecting the ferrule frame to the optical subassembly after the active alignment process.

Optical fiber-to-chip interconnection

A system includes a housing that has a front panel; a substrate that is positioned at a distance from the front panel, in which a data processor is mounted on the substrate; and a pluggable module. The pluggable module includes a co-packaged optical module, at least one first optical connector, a first fiber optic cable that is optically coupled between the co-packaged optical module and the first optical connector, and a fiber guide that is positioned between the co-packaged optical module and the first optical connector and provides mechanical support for the co-packaged optical module and the first optical connector. The co-packaged optical module is configured to receive optical signals from the first optical connector, generate electrical signals based on the received optical signals, and transmit the electrical signals to the data processor. The pluggable module has a shape that enables the pluggable module to pass through an opening in the front panel to enable the co-packaged optical module to be coupled to the substrate.

Communication systems having co-packaged optical modules

A system includes a housing having a front panel, a substrate that is positioned at a distance from the front panel, and a data processor mounted on the substrate. The system includes a pluggable module having an optical module, at least one first optical connector, a first fiber optic cable optically coupled between the optical module and the first optical connector, and a fiber guide positioned between the optical module and the first optical connector and provides mechanical support for the optical module and the first optical connector. The optical module receives optical signals from the first optical connector and generates electrical signals based on the received optical signals, and the electrical signals are transmitted to the data processor. The pluggable module has a shape that enables the pluggable module to pass through an opening in the front panel to enable the optical module to be coupled to the substrate.

An apparatus includes: at least one of a circuit board or a substrate; and a first structure attached to the at least one of a circuit board or a substrate. The first structure is configured to enable an optical module with connector to be removably coupled to the first structure, and the optical module with connector is configured to enable an optical fiber connector to be removably coupled to the optical module with connector. For example, the circuit board or the substrate includes first electrical contacts, the first structure includes walls that define a first opening, the walls also define one or more retaining mechanisms such that when the optical module with connector is inserted into the first opening, the one or more retaining mechanisms on the walls of the first structure engage one or more latch mechanisms on the optical module with connector to secure the optical module with connector to the first structure, and second electrical contacts on the optical module with connector are electrically coupled to the first electrical contacts on the circuit board or the substrate.

Provided are (i) a fiber-optic cable having a cable sheath that enables significant changes in the cable's cross-sectional shape when the cable is bent and (ii) a raceway that can be used to deploy such a fiber-optic cable.

Optical fiber cable and raceway therefor

An apparatus includes an optical power supply including: a power supply light source configured to generate power supply light; at least one optical input/output port; at least one photodetector; and a coupling module. The coupling module is configured to receive the power supply light from the power supply light source and output the power supply light through the optical input/output port, receive reflected light through the optical input/output port, and transmit the reflected light to the photodetector. The photodetector is configured to detect the reflected light and generate a signal representing a level of the reflected light. The optical power supply includes a controller that is configured to compare the level of the detected reflected light with a threshold value, and upon determining that the level of the detected reflected light is less than the threshold value, reduce or turn off the power supply light that is provided to the optical input/output port.

Polarization-diversity optical power supply

An optical communication system comprises an optical communication device and an optical power supply configured to generate a sequence of optical frame templates directed to the optical communication device. The optical communication device may use the received optical frame templates as a light source for generating data-loaded optical frames and/or may extract from the optical frame templates control information encoded therein using one or more headers thereof.

Communication system employing optical frame templates

Provided is an optical communication system comprising a polarization-diversity optical power supply capable of supplying light over a non-polarization-maintaining optical fiber to a polarization-sensitive modulation device. In an example embodiment, the polarization-diversity optical power supply operates to accommodate random polarization fluctuations within the non-polarization-maintaining optical fiber and enables an equal-power split at a passive polarization splitter preceding the polarization-sensitive modulation device.

A system includes a housing including a front panel, a rear panel, an upper panel, and a lower panel. The system includes a first circuit board or substrate, at least one data processor coupled to the first circuit board or substrate and configured to process data, and at least one optical module coupled to the first circuit board or substrate. Each optical module is configured to perform at least one of (i) convert input optical signals to electrical signals that are provided to the at least one data processor, or (ii) convert electrical signals received from the at least one data processor to output optical signals. The system includes at least one inlet fan mounted near the front panel and configured to increase an air flow across a surface of at least one of (i) the at least one data processor, (ii) a heat dissipating device thermally coupled to the at least one data processor, (iii) the at least one optical module, or (iv) a heat dissipating device thermally coupled to the at least one optical module. The system includes at least one laser module configured to provide optical power to the at least one optical module.

Communication systems having optical power supplies

Provided is a connector assembly for optically connecting one or more optical fibers and an array of vertical coupling elements of a photonic integrated circuit (PIC). In various embodiments, the connector assembly is constructed to independently optically scale some feature sizes, such as, for example, the transverse mode size, the array size, the array geometry, and/or various incidence angles, the optical scaling being performed, e.g., from a fiber end face plane to a connector-mating plane and further to a PIC coupling plane. In some embodiments, the connector assembly may support a polarization (de)multiplexing functionality.

A distributed data processing system includes a first data processing system and a second data processing system. The first data processing system includes a first housing, a first data processor, and a first optical module that is configured to convert output electrical signals from the first data processor to output optical signals that are provided to a first optical fiber cable. The second data processing system includes a second housing, a second data processor, and a second optical module that is configured to convert output electrical signals from the second data processor to output optical signals that are provided to a second optical fiber cable. An optical power supply includes at least one laser that is configured to provide a first light source to the first optical module through a first optical link and to provide a second light source to the second optical module through a second optical link.

An apparatus includes a housing capable of being mounted in a rack, and a vertically oriented switch card. The vertically oriented switch card includes one or more vertically oriented application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC) mounted on the vertically oriented switch card. The switch card includes a two-dimensional arrangement of plug ports; each plug port is configured to receive a pluggable optical module. The switch card also includes a two-dimensional arrangement of channel intakes, each channel intake is positioned adjacent to at least one of the plug ports of the two dimensional arrangements of plug ports, each channel intake receives air and directs the received air towards an interior of the housing capable of being mounted in a rack.
