A method of matching a receive-only antenna () for use in receiving video signals in which measurements made on a transceiver's antenna () when in an transmitting mode are used in matching the receive-only antenna. The ratio of the amplitude of the reflected signal to the strength of the transmitted signal strength is used not only in selecting components for matching the transceiver's antenna () but also in selecting components for matching the receive-only antenna (). The ratio may be applied to respective look-up tables () for selecting the components to be used in matching the respective antennas.

Antenna matching in video receivers

A wireless terminal comprises a ground conductor () and a transceiver coupled to an antenna feed, the antenna feed being coupled directly to the ground conductor (). In one embodiment the ground conductor is a conducting case (). The coupling may be via a parallel plate capacitor () formed by a plate () and a surface () of the case (). The case () acts as an efficient, wideband radiator, eliminating the need for a separate antenna. In a modification of this embodiment a slot () is provided to increase the resistance of the case () as seen by the transceiver, thereby increasing the radiating bandwidth of the terminal.

Wireless terminal

A wireless terminal a transceiver coupled to an antenna feed and a ground conductor (), the antenna feed being coupled directly to the ground conductor (). In one embodiment the ground conductor is a conducting case (). The coupling is via a parallel plate capacitor formed by a respective plate () and a portion of the surface of the case (). The case () acts as an efficient, wideband radiator, eliminating the need for separate antennas. Slots () perform a matching function, eliminating the need for matching between the transceiver and antenna feed.

The invention relates to an antenna diversity comprising a first and a second antenna element where the first antenna element is operated in an active mode whereas the second antenna element is operated in a parasitic mode. The present invention minimizes the amount of mismatch while still being able to maximize a predetermined signal quality criterion for the electromagnetic signal on the active path between the first antenna element and the transceiver. By providing a pre-selection unitas well as a selection unitfor selecting an optimal adjustable impedance connected to the second antenna ensuring that the amount of said mismatch is below a predetermined threshold value and that simultaneously a predetermined quality criterion for the transceived electromagnetic signal is fulfilled best within the range determined by the allowable mismatch. The invention further relates to a method for operating such an antenna diversity.

Antenna diversity system and method for operating said system

An antenna arrangement includes aground conductor () incorporating two slots () having an electrically small separation and connections () for coupling a transceiver to each slot to enable the ground conductor to function as two substantially independent antennas. Such a device enables efficient diversity performance to be obtained from small volume. The ground conductor, slots and transceiver are integrated in a module () adapted for connection to a further ground conductor which provides the majority of the antenna area. The further conductor would typically be a printed circuit board ground plane or mobile phone handset. Matching and broadbanding circuitry may conveniently be incorporated in the module. By varying the area of the connections between the module and the further ground conductor, the resonant frequencies of the slots can be modified.

Antenna arrangement and module including the arrangement

A capacitively back-coupled wireless terminal () comprises a PCB () having a ground conductor () on one surface. A back coupling capacitor (C) is carried by the ground conductor. An elongate slot () is provided in the ground conductor to widen the bandwidth. An electromagnetic shield () is provided on the side of the PCB () which in use is facing a lossy dielectric in order to reduce the SAR. The shield is disposed adjacent to, but spaced from, the slot () in the ground conductor and the back coupling capacitor. For narrowband operation the slot may be omitted and/or the spacing between the PCB () and the shield () may be reduced.

A portable communication device has an antenna configuration that allows to form various different antenna directivity configurations. In particular, a control device discriminates between a transmitting state and a receiving state of the communication device. As based thereon, it effects various non-uniform selection patterns among the directivity configurations.

A wireless terminal having antenna diversity comprises a transceiver coupled to a plurality of antenna feeds and a ground conductor ( ), the antenna feeds being coupled directly to the ground conductor ( ). In one embodiment the ground conductor is a conducting case ( ). The coupling may be via parallel plate capacitors ( ) formed by a respective plate ( ) and a surface ( ) of the case ( ). The case ( ) acts as an efficient, wideband radiator, eliminating the need for separate antennas. Slots ( ) may be provided to increase the radiating bandwidth of the terminal and improve its diversity performance. Good diversity performance is obtained in a range of environments, whether the terminal is hand-held or free-standing.

Radio frequency suppressing cable

An antenna is set in an antenna mounting of size and shape such that the antenna may be accommodated at least in part in the naturally occurring dip between a persons shoulder blades at the upper part of the back. The mounting includes supporting straps which extend during use from that part of the mounting hosting the antenna, over the shoulders of the wearer and down the front of the wearers torso. The antenna mounting is provided in a garment (not shown) suitable for wearing about the upper part of the body. By extending the support straps over the wearers shoulders in this way, the weight of the straps serves to counter balance the weight of the antenna and mounting to provide more even weight distribution of the antenna and mounting combined between the front and back of the wearer, so as to be centered about the wearers shoulders. Such weight distribution seeks to improve the comfort of a garment provided with the antenna and mounting and will generally contribute to the correct 'hang' of the garment itself. In one arrangement the antenna is a fabric patch antenna.

Garment antenna

A connector device is provided in the form of a main body component having a lower surface covered with a conductive layer to provide a ground plane and an upper surface carrying a conductive strip portion to form a microstrip line. The combination of the first conductive surface region (ground plane) and second conductive surface region (microstrip line) separated by the main body component dielectric forms a microstrip section. The conductive layer and strip portion are each connected to a conductor of co-axial feed cable. The device is inserted between conductive layers of an antenna of laminar construction, such a as planar inverted F antenna to establish electrical connection between conductors of the feed cable and conduction layers of the antenna. The connector is secured to the antenna by sewing or adhesive. The antenna is normally positioned in a garment.

Connector device for garment patch antenna

A patch antenna ( ) for mobile telecommunications use is designed for incorporation into the garment of a wearer, e.g. in a shoulder pad ( ) or lapel ( ). The antenna comprises first and second ( ) spaced layers of electrically conducting fabric with a layer ( ) of insulating fabric between, and a connection between the conducting layers. The conducting layers ( ) may be a single strip of shaped fabric (A, B, C) folded around the insulating layers. The conducting layers are shaped so that the layer adjacent the wearer is of larger area and is connected as the ground plane of the antenna so as to shield the wearer from the strongest electrical fields. Also, the patch antenna is arranged so that its radiating regions ( ) are remote from the user's head.

Fabric antenna

A dielectric resonator antenna is a cuboid having a first edge, a second edge and a third edge. The first edge is the shortest edge and forms part of a first surface and a second surface of the cuboid. The first surface is for coupling to a transmission line and the second surface is for mounting on a circuit board. The second and third edges have substantially equal lengths. Further, the first and second surfaces are coated with a conducting layer.

Dielectric resonator antenna

A device for receiving and/or transmitting an electromagnetic oscillation is described utilizing an antenna element and at least two wave-guiding assemblies which are each connected to a connection point of the antenna element via a respective supply device, and which are otherwise mutually insulated with respect to the electromagnetic oscillation. Each assembly comprise a conductor part which is coupled to the associated supply device in each of the wave-guiding assemblies for the transmission of the electromagnetic oscillation. The wave-guiding assemblies are designed for receiving and/or transmitting the electromagnetic oscillation via the supply device, and the conductor parts are constructed for receiving and/or radiating the electromagnetic oscillation in a manner comparable to the manner in which the antenna element operates. This device has a plurality of antennas without an appreciable increase in expenditure compared with a similar device having a single antenna element.

Device for receiving and/or transmitting electromagnetic radiation

A communications device comprises a loop antenna having a plurality of feed terminals defining at least two terminal pairs. A controller is provided for selecting one terminal pair to enable reception or transmission from the loop antenna using the selected terminal pair. The selection of terminal pair is made based on the measurement of at least one parameter which is responsive to the proximity to the antenna of, for example, a user of the device. One terminal pair provides an antenna having matched impedance when the user is near the device, and the other terminal pair provides an antenna having matched impedance when the user is distant.
