Composite coatings and methods therefor

A coating system on a superalloy or silicon-containing substrate of an article exposed to high temperatures. The coating system includes a coating layer that overlies the substrate and is susceptible to hot corrosion promoted by molten salt impurities. A corrosion barrier coating overlies the coating layer and contains at least one rare-earth oxide-containing compound that reacts with the molten salt impurities to form a dense, protective byproduct barrier layer.

Silica-forming articles having engineered surfaces to enhance resistance to creep sliding under high-temperature loading

An article includes a silicon-containing region including surface features on a surface thereof. The surface features include depressions, protuberances, or combinations thereof. At least one outer layer overlies the surface of the silicon-containing region. A constituent layer is provided on the surface of the silicon-containing region and between and contacting the silicon-containing region and the at least one outer layer. The constituent layer is formed by constituents of the silicon-containing region and is susceptible to creep within an operating environment of the article. The surface features physically interlock the at least one outer layer with the silicon-containing region through the constituent layer.

Environmental barrier coatings and methods therefor

A system and method for measuring cooling effectiveness of a component is disclosed. The method includes providing a component having a surface provided with a coating including a volatilization-susceptible constituent and a volatilization-resistant constituent. Further, the method includes supplying a first gaseous medium over the surface of the component through a plurality of holes in the component and feeding a second gaseous medium along the surface of the component. The method includes exposing the surface of the component to the first and second gaseous mediums for a predetermined period. The method further includes determining a thickness of the coating exposed to the flow of the first and second gaseous mediums. The method includes analyzing the thickness of the coating to determine whether the coating is removed from the surface of the component upon exposure to the first and second gaseous mediums.

System and method for measuring cooling of a component

An article for use in aggressive environments is presented. In one embodiment, the article comprises a substrate and a self-sealing and substantially hermetic sealing layer comprising an alkaline-earth aluminosilicate disposed over the bondcoat. The substrate may be any high-temperature material, including, for instance, silicon-bearing ceramics and ceramic matrix composites. A method for making such articles is also presented. The method comprises providing a substrate; disposing a self-sealing alkaline-earth aluminosilicate layer over the substrate; and heating the sealing layer to a sealing temperature at which at least a portion of the sealing layer will flow.

Articles for high temperature service and methods for their manufacture

A system and method for measuring cooling effectiveness of a component is disclosed. The method includes providing a component with a coating applied on a surface of the component. Further, the method includes supplying a first gaseous medium over a surface of the component through a plurality of holes in the component and feeding a second gaseous medium along the surface of the component. Further, the method includes exposing the surface of the component to the first and second gaseous mediums for a predetermined period. The method further includes obtaining an image of the surface of the component exposed to the first and second gaseous mediums for the predetermined period. The method includes analyzing the obtained image to determine whether at least a portion of the coating is removed from the surface of the component upon exposure to the second gaseous medium.

In one aspect of the present invention, a method is provided. The method includes disposing a substantially amorphous cadmium tin oxide layer on a support; and thermally processing the substantially amorphous cadmium tin oxide layer in an atmosphere substantially free of cadmium from an external source to form a transparent layer, wherein the transparent layer has an electrical resistivity less than about 2&#xd7;10Ohm-cm. Embodiments disclosed herein provide hydrocarbon additives and methods of making and using the same. The additives are suitable for use in conjunction with gasifiers, furnaces, or other high-temperature vessels. The additives may be part of an input stream to a reaction vessel of a hydrocarbon gasifier. The additives may include materials that at least partially reduce the infiltration of slag into the refractory material.

A treated refractory material includes a sintered porous refractory material having one or more protective materials disposed within pores of the refractory material, wherein the protective material is selected from the group consisting of aluminum oxide, chromium oxide, silica, rare earth oxides, rare earth zirconates, titanium oxide, mullite, zirconium oxide, zirconium silicate, yttrium oxide, magnesium oxide, iron oxide, and blends thereof. Methods of preparing the treated refractory material are also provided. The treated refractory material provides protection from the penetration of slag and extends the service life of the refractory.
