A communication system reduces set up time for an inter-technology handoff of a multi-mode mobile station (MS) from a source network associated with a first radio frequency (RF) technology to a target network associated with a second RF technology by pre-establishing, prior to a determination to handoff the MS, a registration state of the MS and an authentication of the MS in association with the target network and second RF technology. In order to pre-establish the registration state and authentication, the MS exchanges messaging of the second RF technology with the second network via the first network and first RF technology. To facilitate the exchange, the MS includes shims in a second protocol stack associated with the second technology, which shims intercept second protocol stack signaling and redirect the intercepted signaling to a first protocol stack of the MS, associated with the first technology, for tunneling to the source network.

Method and apparatus for inter-technology handoff of a multi-mode mobile station

A method in one example has: establishing communication between two mobile terminals in a base station routing architecture network; and optimizing routing between the two mobiles terminals without requiring all traffic to traverse an anchor point in the base station routing architecture network. An IP base station transceiver architecture utilizes network controlled mobility to provide a transparent connection between a mobile terminal and an anchor point in the network. This transparency hides the mobility associated with changing IP base station transceivers from the mobile terminal and reduces over-the-air signaling.

A key distribution scheme is provided, which is useful for establishing, distributing, and maintaining security associations in a Mobile IP network. An authentication server performs an initial validation of a new session and generates a root key which it delivers to the initial access gateway and to the home agent. The initial access gateway and the home agent each independently compute a derivative key available only to themselves. The initial access gateway, acting as proxy for the mobile station, uses the derivative key to sign the Mobile IP registration or binding update transactions, and sends the signed registration or binding update to the home agent for validation. Once the session is established between the mobile station and the home agent, the access gateways act as proxies on behalf of the mobile station to maintain the session mobility. In handoff, the new access gateway acquires the root key as part of the transferred session context. The new access gateway, acting as proxy for the mobile station, computes a new derivative key from the root key and uses it to sign a binding update.

Method of creating security associations in mobile IP networks

A subscriber unit: sends a media flow to a correspondent host; receives, from the correspondent host, an indication of a level of congestion in the communication network; compares the level of congestion to a congestion threshold (TH) during a first time interval, wherein THis determined based on an assigned priority level for the media flow, and terminates the media flow and enters a sleep mode state when, after expiration of the first time interval, the level of congestion exceeds TH; while in the sleep mode state, the subscriber unit compares a level of congestion in the communication network to a congestion threshold (TH), and exits the sleep mode state and resumes the media flow when the level of congestion remains below THfor the duration of a second time interval.

Methods and apparatus for controlling congestion in a communication network

An exemplary method implements route optimization in an IP telecommunication network that supports wireless mobile stations (MSs). IP address information related to packet flow for MSs is identified and stored in records at a local mobility anchor point (LMAP). The records are compared to determine matching pairs, i.e. records that represent that a first MS is engaged in a communication session with a second MS. First and second points of attachment nodes are determined that support the first and second MS, respectively, based on IP address information contained in a matching pair of records associated with the first and second MS. A route optimization (RO) message is transmitted to the first and second point of attachment nodes, where the RO message includes an IP address of the other point of attachment node. The RO messages represent a request for the first and second point of attachment nodes to address packets sent between the first and second MS with a source address of one of the first and second point of attachment nodes and a destination address of the other of the first and second point of attachment nodes.

Routing optimization in a wireless network using IP packets to convey user information

An exemplary method controls features and services implemented by nodes in a first communication network where nodes in a second network are not adapted to provide such control or services. A first signaling message is sent by a device in response to receipt by a recipient in the first network of a packet transmitted from an originator in another network that does not support the control and services of the first network. The first signaling message is received at a first perimeter node of the first network that in response sends second signaling messages to the other perimeter nodes. Upon the determination of the occurrence of an event by a second perimeter node, a third signaling message is sent from the second perimeter node to the recipient so that it traverses intermediate nodes in the first network utilized for carrying packets from the originator to the recipient. The third signaling message contains control information defining a service feature to be controlled by the intermediate nodes.

Controlling communication path reservations in a packet network with non-homogeneous nodes

A method is provided for controlling communications to and from an access terminal during a hand off period. A smart packet filter is used to identify a packet flow, apply a first treatment to a packet flow based on its destination, and transmit the first treated packet flow along a first route to the access terminal. During a hand off, the packet stream is duplicated, a second treatment is applied to the packet flow and the second treated duplicate packet flow is transmitted to the access terminal via a second route.

An isochronous telecommunication stream comprises a plurality of frames encoded by a variable rate isochronous coder-decoder (codec) at a plurality of code rates of multiple available code rates. An apparatus in one example may have a functionality of a policy decision function divided into two parts; one part representing a home network application function and the other part representing visited network bearer resources and local policies. The one part of the policy decision function supports communications with the application function, and represents the home network and application in a request for QoS control to the visited network. The other part of the policy decision function supports visited network interactions with a policy enforcement function, and represents visited network local policy related to resource utilization and roaming agreement-based policy.

Cryptography is used to generate a token that both authorizes request processing and establishes constraints on that authorization. A mobile communications device user or client subscribes to an information service of a content provider. A description of the subscribed service is generated. The client applies a digital signature to the description and optionally encrypts the signed description. A token is generated based on the signed description. The content provider presents the token to the request processing entity of a mobile service provider in order to establish trust between the content provider and the request processing entity. The request processing entity decrypts the token and verifies the signature of the client. The request of the content provider is validated through a comparison of the request with the constraints indicated in the decrypted token. Valid requests are processed. For example, a request for location information about the client is fulfilled in order for the content provider to push a local weather report to the mobile device of the client.

Voice packets transmitted by an originating wireless user for use in a half-duplex communication mode in a one to many communication session are monitored for an unexpected cessation. If an unexpected cessation of such voice packets is detected for a predetermined time period, the session server controlling the communications session is notified to release the supporting half-duplex communication paths associated with the originating user.

A network interface is created between network controlling elements, such as Base Station Controllers, of the wireless communication network. Information from various established communication channels are routed between various network controlling elements. Thus, a mobile is able to communicate simultaneously with different data networks. If the local network does not selectively assign a local dynamic IP address, the address request is transmitted to a remote network to determine whether a non-local dynamic IP address from a remote pool of non-local dynamic IP addresses is able to be assigned. The communication system selectively communicates with other remote networks until a non-local dynamic IP address can be assigned to satisfy the address request. Once a non-local dynamic IP address has been assigned, the non-local dynamic IP address will be maintained for the duration of the communication session between the communication device and the IP network. If the remote pool of non-local dynamic IP addresses is able to assign a non-local dynamic IP address, then a tunnel set up request is transmitted from the local router of the local network to the remote router of the remote network to establish and OSI layer 3 tunnel to enable communications between the communication device and the IP network.
