Techniques for pairing an external device such as a clinician programmer (CP) to an implantable medical device (IMD) are disclosed, which involve use of a remote controller (RC) paired to the IMD. The RC is placed into a CP pairing mode, which acts differently depending on the type of IMD paired to the RC. If the IMD is RF based, the CP pairing mode places the IMD in a pairing mode, thus allowing the CP to connect directly with the IMD via a RF telemetry protocol. If the IMD is magnetic-induction based, the CP pairing mode causes the RC to advertise its presence to the CP, allowing the CP to connect to the RC via the RF telemetry protocol. Because the RC is also paired with the IMD via a magnetic induction telemetry protocol, the RC acts as a passthrough device to allow communications between the CP and the IMD.

A system for adjusting neuromodulation parameters used by a neuromodulator operably connected to a plurality of electrodes to modulate a neural target, may comprise a translation trigger detector configured to determine that a translation trigger has occurred, a first parameter setting storage configured to store first parameter settings for use by the neuromodulator to modulate the neural target, and a neuromodulation parameter translator. The neuromodulation parameter translator may be operably connected to the translation trigger detector to automatically translate the first parameter settings into a second parameter settings in response to determining the translation trigger has occurred, and replace the first parameter settings with the second parameter settings, or store the second parameter settings in a second parameter setting storage. Automatically translating may include either automatically translating from cathodic parameter settings to anodic parameter settings, or automatically translating from anodic parameter settings to cathodic parameter settings.

A computer implemented system and method facilitates a cycle of generation, sharing, and refinement of volumes related to stimulation of anatomical tissue, such as brain or spinal cord stimulation. Such volumes can include target stimulation volumes, side effect volumes, and volumes of estimated activation. An operating room cable assembly for electrically coupling at least one implantable electrical stimulation lead to a trial stimulator includes an elongated body; a trial stimulator connector disposed at one end of the elongated body; and a lead connector disposed at another end of the elongated body. The lead connector can include one or more buttons that can be pushed to load a lead into the lead connector and released to retain the lead. Alternatively, the lead connector can include a lever that can be operated to load the lead. A further alternative is a slider with a lead engagement element that can be slid between positions allowing loading of a lead and engagement of the lead. Other alternatives include a lead connector with doors that can swing open to allow loading of a lead or a collet/sleeve that can be tightened on the lead.

A connector and lead (or other elongated body) can produce a tactile sensation that indicates alignment between connector contacts of the connector and the terminals on the lead (or other elongated body). For example, a terminal or retention sleeve of the lead (or other elongated body) may include an indented circumferential groove that interacts with a connector contact or retention contact of the connector to produce the tactile sensation. As another example, one or more terminals or spacers may have a larger diameter than adjacent spacers or terminals to interact with a connector contact to produce the tactile sensation.

Methods and systems can facilitate visualizing cathodic and anodic stimulation separately via displaying and modifying graphical representations of anodic and cathodic volumes of activation. Alternately, the methods and systems may separately visualize stimulation of different neural elements, such as nerve fibers and neural cells. These methods and systems can further facilitate programming an electrical stimulation system for stimulating patient tissue.

Systems and methods for visualizing and programming electrical stimulation

An example of a system for delivering neurostimulation may include a programming control circuit and a user interface. The programming control circuit may be configured to generate stimulation parameters controlling delivery of neurostimulation pulses according to one or more stimulation waveforms associated with areas of stimulation each defined by a set of electrodes. The neurostimulation pulses are each delivered to an area of stimulation. The user interface may include a display screen and an interface control circuit. The interface control circuit may be configured to define the one or more stimulation waveforms and the areas of stimulation, and may include a stimulation frequency module configured to display a stimulation rate table on the display screen. The stimulation rate table may present stimulation frequencies associated with each of the areas of stimulation for selection by a user.

Method and apparatus for programming neuromodulation devices

Methods and systems can facilitate visualizing cathodic and anodic stimulation separately. Alternately, the methods and systems may separately visualize stimulation of different neural elements, such as nerve fibers and neural cells. These methods and systems can further facilitate programming an electrical stimulation system for stimulating patient tissue.

A lead assembly includes a lead or lead extension having terminals and a mechanical stop fixed to the lead or lead extension and located distally to the plurality of terminals. The lead assembly also includes a connector having a connector housing, a connector block disposed within the connector housing, a port defined at the distal surface of the connector housing, a lumen extending from the port for receiving a portion the lead or lead extension, and contacts disposed within the connector housing. The outer diameter of the mechanical stop is larger than the lumen diameter within the connector block to halt further insertion of the lead or lead extension into the connector housing. Additionally or alternatively, a visually distinctive marking can be applied to the lead or lead extension to indicate alignment between the terminals of the lead and the contacts of the connector.
