A system and method is provided for generating a second LO signal to a second mixer of a plurality of receivers employed in a multimode communication device. A single PLO and VCO provides a high frequency second LO signal that is divided by divider components to provide a number of lower frequency second LO signals. The different high frequency second LO signal and the number of lower frequency second LO signals may be utilized for providing second LO signals for component employed in receiving communications from radio devices employing different communication standards and/or frequency ranges.

A dual band VCO selects between the oscillator output frequencies by switching the resonant circuit elements in the active circuit. For each output frequency selected, the oscillator produces a single frequency signal and additional energy in the form of phase noise. This phase noise may be from sideband noise produced by modulation of the single frequency or produced by the active device in the oscillator as flicker noise, or the noise figure of the active device under large signal conditions or the filtering effect or the resonant circuit. Phase noise is reduced by shifting the bias point for the active device to the level where phase noise is minimum for each output frequency. At the time the output frequency is selectively switched, the bias to the active device is selectively switched to an optimum bias level for minimum phase noise for each respective selected frequency.

The RF section of a communication device (,) includes a receiver (,), a transmitter (,), first injection frequency generation circuit (,), and an intermediate frequency (IF) generation circuit (,). The IF generation circuit has a shared output coupled to both the receiver and transmitter, as well as a control circuit (,) for feedback control purposes. The IF generation circuit is used to generate IF for both the receiver and transmitter, thus using fewer components that two separate IF generation circuits. It includes two differently tuned voltage controlled oscillators (,) which are selectively and exclusively powered by first and second power switches (,), respectively. The control circuit provides a single control voltage corresponding to a desired frequency pair to both VCOs at a common control input, then selects the appropriate VCO depending on whether the communication device is receiving or transmitting.

A method and apparatus for biasing the voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) (110) of a Phase Locked Loop (PLL) (100) includes a bias circuit (114) providing a peak minimum/maximum voltage detector (202) tied to the control line (116) of the PLL (100). During operation, the detector (202) detects a minimum or maximum voltage on the VCO control line (116) as the bias control voltage (118) applied to the VCO (110) is varied. Detection of such a minimum or maximum voltage is equivalent to the detection of a minimum or a maximum frequency, which in turn equates to the detection of an optimal bias condition for noise.

An active circuit includes an amplifying transistor (102), a voltage reference (208), and an active bias circuit. The active bias circuit controls the operating point of the amplifying transistor, and includes a bias transistor (224) which is controlled by the voltage reference and the collector current of the amplifying transistor. As the temperature of the amplifying transistor changes, the tendency of the collector current to change is counter-acted by the bias transistor and the voltage reference.

An oscillator (100) includes a tank circuit (102) coupled to a an active circuit (108). The feedback (104) provides the necessary feedback between the tank and the active circuit necessary for oscillation. The active circuit (108) is biased via a biasing circuit (106) and coupled out to a load via an external coupling (110). The active circuit (108) includes two transistors (124, 126) coupled to each other in a cascode configuration. Transistor (126) provides the collector current for transistor (124) while preventing it from entering saturation prematurely. The biasing circuit (106) provides sufficient current drain for the transistor (126) in order to provide for optimum phase noise and bandwidth performance of the oscillator 100.

An oscillator (200) with improved sideband noise is disclosed. This improvement is accomplished without affecting the Q or the output power of the oscillator (200). The improvement is realized by increasing the rate of change of reactance over frequency. The increase in the rate of change is realized by placing two transmission lines (208, 210) in close proximity of each other. This increase assures oscillation while minimizing the sideband noise, and providing maximum bandwidth.

A bandpass filter, having an input port and an output port, comprises a first microstrip split-ring resonator coupled to input port, and a second microstrip split-ring resonator coupled to the first microstrip split-ring resonator, and coupled to the output port. A lumped or distributed capacitance is disposed between the first microstrip split-ring resonator and the second microstrip split-ring resonator.

A multipole bandpass filter (40) comprises a first microstrip split-ring resonator (12), having at least a first edge and a second edge, the first edge having a gap (20) therein, and an input. The bandpass filter (40) also comprises a second microstrip split-ring resonator (14), having at least a first edge and a second edge, the second edge of the second microstrip split-ring resonator comprising a gap (26) therein and a balanced output (30, 32). The bandpass filter also includes at least one straight line quasi-combline resonator (22), disposed between the first microstrip split-ring resonator, and the second microstrip split-ring resonator.

A stripline split-ring resonator bandpass filter comprises first and second conducting layers and first and second substrates connected to each other between the conducting layers. A first stripline ring resonator is located on the top side of the second nonconducting substrate and is coupled to the input port of the BPF. The first stripline ring resonator has a gap located therein. A second stripline ring resonator is also located on the top side of the second nonconducting substrate between the first stripline ring resonator and the output port of the BPF. The second stripline ring resonator has a gap located therein. The first substrate has at least two slots therein to allow lumped capacitors to be placed in the gaps in the first and second ring resonators.

An oscillator comprises a resonator for providing an oscillation frequency for the oscillator, an active network, coupled to the resonator, for driving the resonator, and a split-ring resonator coupled to the main resonator and used to provide amplitude and phase balanced outputs. The split-ring resonator has at least a first edge, which is coupled to the resonator, and a second edge. The second edge has a gap therein, and a first terminal located at one side of the gap, and a second terminal symmetrically located at the other side of the gap.

A bandpass filter (40) comprises a first microstrip split-ring resonator (12), having at least a first edge and a second edge, the first edge having a gap (20) therein, and an input. The bandpass filter (40) also comprises a second microstrip split-ring resonator (14), having at least a first edge and a second edge, the first edge being coupled to the second edge of the first microstrip split-ring resonator, and the second edge of the second microstrip split-ring resonator comprising a gap (26) therein and a balanced output (30, 32).
