Disclosed is a scanner for the scanning of articles including a scanning apparatus () having a scanning device () and a rotatable sample mount () whereby, the scanning device and mount are relatively displaceable along the rotary axis () of the mount, a receptacle () mounted on the sample mount, the receptacle being capable of securely accommodating an article (), and an actuator () for linearly displacing the receptacle whereby, actuation of the actuator displaces the receptacle and any article secured thereto, with respect to the sample mount. The article may be elongate and the displacement by the actuator is along an axis defined by the elongate axis of the elongate article. Also disclosed is a method of scanning.

Method and apparatus for scanning

A device for the axial and rotational movement of a sample is disclosed comprising a mount member for mounting the sample, which is rotatable about and movable along an axis, characterised in that the mount member has a helical screw thread which produces the movement along said axis simultaneously with the rotation. A sample may be scanned or machined whilst being axially and rotationally moved. The screw thread may be disengageable perphaps by relative movement of co-operating screw threads into and out of engagement with each other by a lever to allow movement of the mount member along the axis without rotation when desired. The screw thread on one of the members may be formed from a piece or layer of a deformable material, which deforms to form a mating screw thread upon being brought into engagement with the screw thread on the other member. Also desclosed is a method of scanning a sample.

A connecting device for connecting a shank 16 to a measuring probe 18 is disclosed, to enable the probe 18 to be incorporated on a machine tool for the purpose of tracing a contour of a model. The device includes first and second parts (20,22) connected to the shank and the probe respectively, retained together by a connecting bolt 50 which is spring-loaded by means of Belville washers 56. An arm 60 extends from the second part to engage the housing 14 of the spindle 10, and thereby prevent rotation of the spindle shaft 12. In the event of accidental spindle start-up the two parts 20,22 may rotate relative to each other (the shank rotating with the shaft 12); a thrust bearing 42 enabling sliding of the two parts.

Device for connecting a shank to a probe

A device for changing styli or probes in a coordinate measuring machine has a magazine (330) with several stations each holding a stylus or probe (320). A holder (310) on the quill of the coordinate measuring machine has an opening (313A), so that kinematic support elements (325) in the holder (310) can be moved underneath cooperating kinematic support elements (324) on the stylus (320). When the holder (310) is engaged in the magazine (330), an extension plate (334) causes the arm (314) to swing out of the way. This arrangement enables the holder (310) to pick up the stylus (320) purely by translational movements of the holder (310), without the need for any separate motor or electromagnet to couple the stylus to the holder.
