A method for preparing a pre-bond surface of a composite structure includes the steps of: (1) separating a peel ply, co-cured with a composite substrate, from the composite substrate; and (2) transferring an identifiable marking agent from the peel ply to the composite substrate upon separation of the peel ply from the composite substrate. Residue of the peel ply, transferred from the peel ply to the composite substrate upon separation of the peel ply from the composite substrate, is layered on the identifiable marking agent.

Composite structure and method for inspecting a pre-bond surface of a composite structure

Adhesion testing systems, methods of fabrication, and methods of testing are disclosed. Test systems include test coupons with non-metallic test adherends. Test coupons are configured to test bonds to the non-metallic test adherends under peeling stress and/or shearing stress. Test methods are simplified and rapid as compared to standard adhesion tests and include methods of accelerated environmental testing. Test methods also are adapted for qualitative and quantitative measurement of bond performance.

Methods and systems for rapidly testing adhesion

A method for repeatably fabricating a test specimen assembly comprising a pair of fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) test specimens adhesively bonded together, the bonded joint having respective areas of substantially different, but consistent variable adhesive bond strengths suitable as a calibration standard. The method comprises fabricating a first FRP test specimen having a bonding surface with first and second areas that have substantially different bonded joint performance-governing characteristics and then using adhesive to bond the bonding surface of the first FRP test specimen to the bonding surface of a second FRP test specimen. The different bonded joint performance-governing characteristics are achieved by treating first and second areas of the surface of the first FRP test specimen using different respective surface preparation techniques.
