A metal surface is coated with a coating layer comprising substituted polyphenylene oxide (PPO), such as 2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide, forming a PPO-coated metal article and the PPO-coated metal article is then heat treated, for example, from above ambient temperature to about 200&deg; C., to enhance the adhesion of the PPO to the metal surface and improve the corrosion protection for the coated metal article.

A metal article is protected from corrosion under prolonged exposure to normal ambient atmospheric conditions which cause such corrosion by coating the metal article, optionally in the presence of an adherent organic resinous coating, which comprises treating the metal with an effective amount of effective amount of one or more hydrocarbyl-substituted sulfonyl amido diphenylamine compounds for the corrosion protection of the metal article. These compound(s) are of the formula p-(R--SO.sub.2 --NH--C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --NH)--C.sub.6 H.sub.5, where R is a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbyl group selected from the group consisting of alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl, alkenyl, and cycloalkyl. A particularly preferred compound is p-(p-toluene sulfonyl amido)-diphenylamine.

The present invention relates to a corrosion resistant metal article which comprises: (a) a metal body normally prone to corrosion when subjected to potentially corrosive conditions, other than stainless steel or a metal similar to stainless steel; and (b) a neat coating of neutral, undoped polyaniline in the emeraldine base form on the metal body.

The corrosion protection of a metal article is accomplished by treating the metal article, which has not been treated with a conversion coating, with a wash coat solution comprising polyphenylene oxide, such as alkyl substituted polyphenylene oxide, preferably poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-polyphenylene oxide).

A metal article is protected from corrosion under prolonged exposure to normal ambient atmospheric conditions which cause such corrosion by coating the metal article with an adherent organic coating which does not exude corrosive acid, which comprises an effective amount of an aromatic amine compound containing a p-phenylenediamine moiety which is not an epoxy crosslinking agent but which is capable of being oxidized in air, an air oxidation product thereof, or a mixture of the amine and air oxidation product for corrosion protection of the metal article, before the coated metal article is placed in contact with such atmospheric conditions which cause such corrosion.
