The invention relates to composites comprising a polysaccharide gelled within pores of a foam, methods of preparation, and uses thereof, for example, in biomedical applications such as cell culture media and implants, controlled release delivery systems, food applications, industrial applications, and personal care applications such as cosmetic and oral hygiene. The composites of the present invention are simple to formulate using few steps and are useful for entrapping heat-sensitive components, such as cells, drugs, flavors or fragrances within the polysaccharide gel. In addition, the invention provides for a composite able to gently immobilize fragile components, such as living cells, without exposing such components to shear forces.

Gelled composite

A method for the preparation of microcrystalline cellulose containing tablets by roller compaction followed by tabletting is disclosed. A tablet formulation is converted to a dry granulate by roller compaction, and the dry granulate is lubricated and compacted to a tablet. The tablet formulation comprises at least one active, an microcrystalline cellulose containing material, and, optionally other pharmaceutically acceptable excipients. The microcrystalline cellulose containing material has a maximum primary compaction tensile strength of at least 9 MPa or at least 9.5 MPa and a secondary compaction tensile strength of at least 5 MPa, at least 5.5 MPa, or at least 6 MPa. A method for evaluating binders is also disclosed.

Dry granulation binders, products, and use thereof

The present invention is directed to a homogeneous, thermoreversible gel comprising carrageenan wherein the carrageenan has a viscosity of less than 10 cP at 75&#xb0; C. when measured in a 0.10 molar aqueous sodium chloride solution containing 1.5% by weight of the carrageenan based on the weight of all components in the solution, and optionally at least one of a plasticizer, a second film former, a bulking agent, and a pH controlling agent, wherein the gel has a solids content of at least 40%. The present invention is also directed to processes for the preparation thereof, as well as to variety of products containing the gel including edible products, soft capsules, hard capsules and solid forms encapsulating powders, tablets, caplets, etc.

Homogeneous, thermoreversible gel containing reduced viscosity carrageenan and products made therefrom

The present invention is directed to a homogeneous, thermoreversible gel film comprising a film forming amount of kappa-2 carrageenan, and optionally at least one of a plasticizer, a second film former, a bulking agent, and a pH controlling agent; and processes for the preparation thereof. The present invention is also directed to soft capsules and solid forms containing the gel film, as well as processes for the preparation thereof.

Homogeneous, thermoreversible gel film containing kappa-2 carrageenan and soft capsules made therefrom

The methods of the present invention prepare carrageenan products from processed seaweed material having a solids content of less than 25% by weight solids, using shear stress treatment. The carrageenan products comprise at least about 60% by weight of carrageenan and at least about 2% by weight of acid insoluble material. The carrageenan products of the present invention are useful as components in food products, such as, dairy products, meats, and dessert gels as well as non-food products, such as, toothpaste formulations, cosmetics, paints, films and delivery capsules.

Production of carrageenan and carrageenan products

The Methods of the present invention prepare carrageenan products from processed seaweed material using shear stress treatment are disclosed. The carrageenan products comprise at least about 65% by weight of carrageenan and at least about 2% by weight of acid insoluble material. The carrageenan products of the present invention preferably have an onset of hydration below about 40&#xb0; C. and a color of greater than about 74 *L units. The carrageenan products of the present invention are useful as components in food products, such as, dairy products, meats, and dessert gels as well as non-food products, such as, toothpaste formulations, cosmetics, and paints.
