A process of recovering iron values and separating zinc oxides and other contaminants from steel mill waste metal oxides, such as blast furnace dust, BOF dust, mill scale and oily sludges, characterized by iron metallization levels up to 95% or more and zinc oxide removal in excess of 99%, and including the steps of blending the oxides with coke breeze in an amount sufficient to provide a total carbon content of 16% to 22%, the coke breeze having a particle size of 50% or more plus 60 mesh or larger, briquetting the blend to form briquettes having a thickness ranging from 1/2' to 3/4', and firing the briquettes in a rotary hearth furnace to metallize the iron and evolve zinc and other oxide contaminants.

Treatment of steel mill waste metal oxides

A process for desulfurizing a bath of molten iron contained in a vessel comprising the injection of particulate lime and a particulate hydrocarbon containing carbon and hydrogen in properties ranging from CH.sub.&gt;0 to CH.sub.2 and having a volatile matter concentration of 5 to 20%, by weight, or a premixture of the lime and hydrocarbon, which premixture has a loss on ignition factor of at least 11%, by weight.

Desulfurizing process

A process for desulfurizing molten steel which includes the formation of a synthetic slag layer, the formation of a cover which occludes the ambient air, and the simultaneous injection of lime and a reactant agent which vaporizes within the molten steel.

Process for desulfurizing steel

Method and apparatus for dispensing a fluidized stream of particulate material, particularly a blended mixture of particulate materials which are useful in the desulfurization of molten ferrous metals. Control of the flow rates of the particulate materials are individually and independently controlled and without reliance upon varying the top pressures within the dispenser vessels containing the separate particulate materials.

Method and apparatus for dispensing a fluidized stream of particulate

A process for desulfurizing a bath of molten iron contained in a vessel comprising the steps of injecting particulate lime and a carbon-containing particulate with a non-oxidizing carrier gas beneath the surface of the bath to remove sulfur from the iron, while controlling the rate of injection of the carbon-containing particles to prevent substantial ejection of the bath from the vessel. The preferred carbon-containing materials are graphite and a compound containing at least carbon and hydrogen in proportions ranging from CH.sub.&gt;0 to CH.sub.2. The preferred carrier gas is a hydrocarbon gas.

Desulfurization process

Desulfurization of molten ferrous metals such as pig iron is facilitated through the injection of a particulate fluidized mixture of non-oxidizing material and magnesium-containing reactive material by in-line mixing in a conveying line and consequent sub-surface injection. The amount of the contained magnesium, injection time, and contained magnesium injection rate are controlled to maximize process efficiency.

Desulfurization method

The incidence of rare earth oxy-sulfide inclusions in killed hot-rolled high strength low alloy steels of the vanadium-nitrogen type is lowered through restriction of the silicon content to 0.05% maximum without a concurrent reduction of yield strength to values below 80,000 p.s.i. through a balance of composition, product thickness and hot-rolling collection temperature.
