A general type manager for managing connection addresses and connection types of a computer system, wherein the general type manager provides a first interface for interfacing between the general type manager and one or more application programs of the computer system, and the general type manager is adapted to perform a plurality of general type manager (gtm) functions called by the application programs. The general type manager also provides a second interface for interfacing between the general type manager and one or more type managers of the computer system, wherein a type manager supports at least one connection type, and each type manager is adapted to perform a plurality of type functions called by the general type manager in accordance with one or more gtm functions called by an application program. The plurality of gtm functions comprises a first gtm function for initializing the general type manager for use; a second gtm function for preparing the general type manager to be unloaded; a third gtm function for editing a connection address in accordance with a connection type of the connection address; and a fourth gtm function for creating and editing a new connection address of a connection type supported by the one or more type managers.

Extensible communication type manager for a computer system

The present invention for guided touring of websites includes a web tour director programmed onto a web server for connecting a client system to a number of web sites in accordance with a web tour stop vector identifying the web sites as tour stops of a web guided tour. In a computer system having a first application program including a first set of help files and a second application program including a second set of help files, the integrated help utility of the present invention includes a process for displaying selected information in the first and second help files, the process comprises the steps of: 1) providing a first help directory associated with the first set of help files, the first help directory includes a first plurality of topic items corresponding to information provided in the first set of help files; 2) providing a second help directory associated with the second set of help files, the second help directory includes a second plurality of topic items corresponding to information provided in the second set of help files; 3) displaying the first plurality of topic items concurrently with the second plurality of topic items; 4) selecting a selected one of the topic items from either the first plurality of topic items or the second plurality of topic items; 5) accessing an individual help file of either the first set of help files or the second set of help files, the accessed individual help file corresponds to the selected one of the topic items; and 6) displaying information contained in the individual help file.
