This invention describes a method and a system that is used to provide a list of personnel who were present in a building or area that has been evacuated due to an emergency, such as a fire or earthquake. The monitor stores data from a time clock or access control system in parallel with a separate server. The monitor is portable and can be taken out of the building. The monitor can be connected to central alarm monitoring company, who can act as a backup system with the ability to provide the data to a responding fire department. The portable unit can display the names, communicate the data to other display devices including printers.

A locking case is provided including a base portion and a lid portion rotatably engaged to the base portion. A locking mechanism is mounted on the lid portion and extends therethrough. The locking mechanism includes a cam member having first and second surfaces, and being rotatable to a locked position in response to operation of the locking mechanism. A catch is mounted to the base portion and is disposed proximate the cam first surface when the cam is in the locked position. A reinforcing bracket is mounted to the lid. The reinforcing bracket has a reinforcing flange disposed proximate the cam second surface when the cam is disposed in the locked position.

A method and apparatus are provided for adaptively controlling printer functions of a dot matrix printer in response to sensing the type of printer ink cartridge being used. An identifying resistive value is applied to surface of the cartridge and installed within the printer. The printer includes contacts that include sensors and sensor circuitry useful to detect a presence of the resistive indicator and the resistive value thereof. The sensed resistive value is used to directly control printer functions, and/or to access stored data or printer control routines specific to the type of cartridge, or desired performance characteristics. Stored information, which may be appended by other sensed information such as printer usage data, is used to selectively regulate printer operation to achieve maximum efficiency and performance from the particular ink cartridge.

Battery back up system is disclosed for powering a wall transformer when a power supply failure occurs. The system comprises a back up battery connectable to the wall transformer to provide power to the device powered by the wall transformer, upon a power interruption. The system may include an adaptor into which the backup battery and wall transformer may be connected. The adaptor may be connected to a conventional AC power source. Other embodiments of the invention allow a backup battery to be directly connected to the wall transformer.

A power converter for providing a selectable desired voltage has a converter circuit having an input port for receiving an input of a first voltage and an output port for providing an output of a second voltage. The converter circuit also has a keyway for receiving a key. The key, which is configured to be received by the keyway, contains an electrical component and has a body within which the electrical component is disposed. The output voltage of the converter is determined by the value of the component disposed within the body of the key such that the output voltage can be varied by replacing the key with another key having an electrical component of a different value.

Selectable output power converter

Apparatus for providing integrated test circuits for a smoke detector is disclosed. The smoke detector operates such that products of combustion such as smoke and carbon monoxide cause the resistance across a sensor element to be lowered. The lowered resistance of the sensor element, in normal operation, causes a change in an associated voltage level. When the change in the associated voltage level is sufficiently large, the change is detected resulting in the generation of an alarm signal. In the present invention, a switch or button causes a circuit variation that results in a voltage level change similar to that attained when the voltage across the sensor changes as a result of the introduction of the products of combustion. Activation of the switch or button results in a generation of the alarm signal and tests the operational status of the smoke detector. A multiplicity of embodiments of the present invention are illustrated.
