A scheme for redirecting data to a mobile communication device capable of communicating via at least one short-range wireless communication path and at least one long-range wireless communication path. An embodiment comprises one or more of the following: a structure for setting a redirection flag configured for a user associated with a mobile communication device to enable continuous redirection of data items thereto from a host system until the redirection flag is reset to indicate cessation of redirection of the data items. Thereafter, the embodiment is operable to determine whether the mobile communication device is within coverage of a cell of a plurality of cells, each cell being operable with an associated short-range wireless communication path, whereby a data item is redirected accordingly.

System and method for redirecting data to a wireless device over a plurality of communication paths

A system is for encoding information on a passive surface acoustic wave (SAW) device. The system includes a requesting unit configured to wirelessly transmit an impulse signal. The impulse signal is a signal that includes only a single pulse. A SAW device has an interdigital transducer (IDT) configured to physically store coded data. The SAW device is configured to receive the impulse signal. In response to receiving the impulse signal, the SAW device excites the IDT to generate a coded signal that includes the stored coded data and frequency components at a fundamental frequency.

Wireless communication system using surface acoustic wave (SAW) second harmonic techniques

A wireless communication device has a docking cavity, a short-range transceiver, and a long-range transceiver for long-range wireless communication with a wireless network. A wireless communication module includes a speaker and a microphone, and a short-range transceiver for short-range wireless communication with the device's short-range transceiver. The module is configured to operate in first and second modes. In the first mode, the module is separated from the communication device. In the second mode, the module is mounted in the cavity. In both modes, communication between a user and the network is conducted through the module's microphone and speaker, both short-range transceivers and the long-range transceiver.

Communication device with multiple detachable communication modules

An acoustic wave biosensor comprises a plurality of spaced apart electrodes disposed on a substrate of piezoelectric material and having a biolayer matched to a specific type of autoinducer signaling molecule to be detected. The biolayer comprises a layer of heterobifunctional molecules disposed on the electrodes and on the piezoelectric material between the electrodes, and a plurality of bioreceptor molecules which bind exclusively with the specific type of autoinducer signaling molecule to be detected. The bioreceptor molecules are supported by the layer of heterobifunctional molecules, and a hydrogel layer surrounds the bioreceptor molecules to support a three-dimensional structure thereof. The bioreceptor molecules can bind with the specific type of autoinducer signaling molecule to be detected, and the biolayer is reactive thereto such that corresponding autoinducer signaling molecules bind to the biolayer and detectably vary acoustic characteristics of the acoustic wave biosensor.

Acoustic wave biosensor for the detection and identification of characteristic signaling molecules in a biological medium

A biosensor for detecting particular substances biosensor comprises a piezoelectric material, an input transducer supported by the piezoelectric material to receive an input signal and propagate a corresponding acoustic wave within the piezoelectric material and an output transducer supported by the piezoelectric material to receive the acoustic wave. At least two chemically orthogonal or semi-orthogonal biolayers are supported by the piezoelectric material to receive substances to be tested and cause corresponding changes in the acoustic wave. The output transducer can transmit a corresponding output signal embodying separate channel data indicative of the substances received.

Differentiation and identification of analogous chemical and biological substances with biosensors

An acoustic wave sensor assembly includes piezoelectric material, a first acoustic wave resonator element structure mounted on the piezoelectric material for interacting with an electrical signal, the acoustic wave resonator element structure being operable to interact with an acoustic wave propagating within the piezoelectric material to produce a first frequency response. Further acoustic wave resonator element structures are mounted on the piezoelectric material for interacting with electrical signals, the further acoustic wave resonator element structures being operable to interact with further acoustic waves propagating within the piezoelectric material to produce subsequent frequency responses. The first acoustic wave resonator element structure and further acoustic wave resonator element structures are combined to form a ladder or lattice filter network to produce an overall frequency response. Sensitive areas are mounted on the piezoelectric material and associated with the acoustic wave resonator element structures which, if predetermined effects to be sensed or detected are present, are modified thereby to control the nature of the frequency responses with resultant specific perturbations of the combined frequency response and thereby provide information with respect to the predetermined effects to be sensed or detected.

Acoustic wave sensor assembly utilizing a multi-element structure

An IDT produces a SAW when excited by a single electrical pulse and can be fabricated to embody a code, which code provides for a passive autocorrelation of a SAW input to the IDT and thereby lends itself to further application as a signal generator in a communication device. However, internal dimensions of IDTs are inversely proportional to operating frequency, such that high frequency IDTs present significant manufacturing difficulties. Fabrication of IDTs for high frequency applications is simplified by exploiting a harmonic frequency SAW generated by IDTs. An IDT may therefore be designed according to fundamental frequency internal dimension criteria but can operate at a multiple of the fundamental frequency, thereby providing much higher frequency operation than conventional SAW systems. Operation of a second harmonic SAW system at 2.4 GHz based on a fundamental frequency of 1.2 GHz is contemplated.

A method of detecting and identifying bacteria, micro-organisms or plants in a liquid or gaseous medium, the bacteria, micro-organisms or plants being of the kind which produce signaling molecules in intercellular space, includes positioning a biosensor in the liquid or gaseous medium, the biosensor having a biolayer matched to specific signaling molecules to be detected whereby the biolayer is reactive thereto in a manner which varies operation of the sensor. Such variation of the operation of the biosensor is detected to thereby determine the presence and purpose of the bacteria, micro-organisms or plants in the liquid or gaseous medium.

An RFID biosensor detection system for detecting particular substances has an interrogator circuit to transmit a radio frequency signal, an input transducer mounted on a piezoelectric material to receive an input radio frequency signal and propagate a corresponding acoustic wave within the piezoelectric material. At least two chemically orthogonal or semi-orthogonal biolayers are mounted on the piezoelectric material to receive substances to be tested and cause corresponding changes in the acoustic wave. An output transducer is mounted on the piezoelectric material to receive the acoustic wave and transmit a corresponding output radio frequency signal. A receiver circuit receives the corresponding output radio frequency signal and provides separate channel data indicative of the substances received.

Differentiation and identification of analogous chemical or biological substances with biosensors

An electrical sub-circuit assembly is secured to a printed circuit board by providing a printed circuit board with a basin, the printed circuit board having electrical pathways leading to the top or side or on the bottom of said basin, and positioning an electrical sub-circuit assembly in the basin, the sub-circuit assembly having dimensions corresponding to the size of the basin so as to be a close fit therein and having electrical connections which locate adjacent corresponding electrical pathways on the printed circuit board. The sub-circuit assembly is secured in the basin, and the electrical connections on the sub-circuit assembly are connected to the corresponding pathways on the printed circuit board.

Securing an electrical sub-circuit assembly to a printed circuit board

A sensing system includes an acoustic wave device comprising a body of piezoelectric material, and a first electrode assembly mounted on the piezoelectric body whereby an appropriate input applied to the electrode assembly produces an acoustic wave in the piezoelectric body and a first frequency response. The acoustic wave device also has a second electrode assembly to produce a second frequency response, the second electrode assembly being in contact with an area sensitive to a supplied stimulus to cause a characteristic of the sensitive area to change when a supplied stimulus is sensed to thereby change the second frequency response. The acoustic wave device has an output connected to the input of an amplifier, the amplifier having an output connected to the input of a coupling device. The coupling device is connected to the input of the acoustic wave device and has an output connected to a detector. The acoustic wave device, the amplifier and the coupling device are configured to be in an 'off' condition when no supplied stimulus is sensed by the sensitive area of the acoustic wave device and to be in an 'on' condition when a supplied stimulus is sensed by the sensitive area. The coupling device is configured to send a change signal to the detector when a change from the &#x201c;off&#x201d; condition to the &#x201c;on&#x201d; condition occurs.
